Conan O'Brien played with Jack White

Like a lot of people, I don’t have cable. So I had to wait til today to see this duet between Jack and Coco. Worth the wait.

Happy to have this guy back on the airwaves. He’s obviously already proving that he is more talented than any other late night host.

Ticket Giveaway: Glasser at Music Hall of Williamsburg

Glasser, if you don’t know by now, is the singular work of one Cameron Mesirow– an ethereal one woman electro-orchestra which rings in tune to acts that we adore such as Alaska In Winter, except with a femininity that seems to float effortlessly above the rhythms of each song.

Around the time of Glasser’s debut release in 2009, Apply had plenty of company in the realm of breathy electro femme fatales (see: Class Actress, Zola Jesus, Florence & The Machine, Bat For Lashes, and so on)– yet Mesirow’s work managed to stay afloat amongst her, can we say, competitors. Luckily in music, when you like a sound there’s always plenty to go around.

Did we mention a pretty stellar live set goes a long way? Well, if you haven’t had a chance to check out Glasser during her stunning live performances (see: The Fader Fort during CMJ), you’re in luck– because we’ve got a pair of tickets to see Glasser at Music Hall of Williamsburg next Tuesday (11/16) with ARP and all you have to do is comment below with something interesting to say for a chance to win!

While you’re at it, pick up a copy of Glasser’s debut full-length, Ring, out on True Panther now… and check out the video for “Mirrorage” after the jump…

FILM REVIEW, For Colored Girls

LOOK AT THIS CAST. JUST LOOK AT IT.

“We should be immune if we’re still alive. How are we still alive?”

For Colored Girls brings together some of the most talented actresses in Hollywood in an unprecedented ensemble drama about “being alive and being a woman.” To see Loretta Devine, Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, and Phylicia Rashad on screen together is a major event, regardless of the circumstances. It tells the story of a group of women, each struggling with their own personal drama stemming from the psychological and societal effects of being a “colored girl,” who are all living in or connected to a Harlem apartment building. The majority of For Colored Girls is either painfully dull or brutally over-the-top, but just admit it – the presence of these women is the reason you’ll be buying your ticket.

Sam Mickens' "Kayfabe: Game of Death": Sat & Sun at Death by Audio

If you are looking for something DIFFERENT this weekend then check out the info below. We have no clue what to expect, but something tells me that it is going to rule hard.

Brooklyn-based artist Sam Mickens presents his new performance work, “Kayfabe: Game of Death” at Death by Audio Saturday, November 6th & Sunday, November 7th, MMX.

A brutal reveille for this new phase of his NY-based performance work, “Kayfabe: Game of Death” sprung, fully grown and armored, from Mickens’ recent obsessions with and voluminous research into the professional wrestling and wrestlers from the era of his youth and, further, from the larger concept worlds that thread through and explode from that of professional wrestling. Also integrating thematic elements from Mickens’ longstanding obsession with the Rev. Jim Jones & his Peoples Temple, as well as a Homeric sense of poetic sweep, the piece will utilize elements of dramatic text, song, modern movement, video, and less definable modes to deliver a raw smackdown of avant pageantry.

Featuring:
Cleo Fishel | Laurel Jones | Charlie Looker | Alexis Marcelo | Noah Mickens | Sam Mickens | Mike Pride | Steven Reker | Alan Sutherland | and others

“Kayfabe: Game of Death” at Death by Audio [49 S. 2nd St., Brooklyn, NY]
Saturday Nov. 6th & Sunday Nov. 7th at 8pm
$10-15 sliding scale. Noone will be turned away for lack of funds,
though seating will be limited.

The Great Urban Hack

What if you could GPS report your location to a taxi or car service, report to traffic enforcement a car that blatantly cut you off on your bike, or crowdsource a position for your startup production company instantly from an app on your phone? What if the working but uninsured could flash mob an influential presence for universal health insurance at a sudden, but single moment? What if the city could immediately inform you when the complaints you yourself issue to MTA or the parks service, based on their own planned schedules, could be addressed? These are but a few of the kinds of problems and solutions New Yorkers have suggested be tackled by the first ever “Great Urban Hack” going down this weekend.
Coders, open source techs, and journalists are getting together to realize, design, code, create and report on projects to help New Yorkers get more information day to day, and thus engage even more in our fair city. In a 36 hour marathon at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center on the West Side this weekend, WNYC, the Knight Foundation, and Hacks/Hackers, an NYC group of computer programmers, tech gurus, and writers who evidently band together to alleviate some of New Yorker’s technical difficulties, are staging this first of it’s kind event. It seems to be something of a coup de grace, their first all night hack-a thon, of sorts. Bringing together public data and input, combined with information and innovation, the goal is to end the weekend with an unknown number of web tools, phone or tablature apps, and other innovations built within the time of the 36 hour stretch. Over the course of the two days, participants will brainstorm together, come up with problems plaguing our urban lives, and come up with solutions in the form off apps, website tools, etc.

The event is open to the public for $25 reported to help fund the organization, the snacks, and I’m sure the coffee needed to help everybody make it through the perfect brainstorm. Click here for an RSVP.  According to Hacks/Hackers website:

The new Duane Reade or How Williamsburg is the New Brooklyn Heights

According to the “I’m Boycotting Duane Reade to Save Williamsburg” facebook group, a Duane Reade will be opened on Bedford, directly across from Kings Pharmacy this Saturday.

First off, I need to state that I don’t really give a shit about saving small business in this case.

I do, however, give a shit when urban planning is totally disregarded and services are doubled up. We already have several pharmacies all of which are a stone’s throw from each other, reminding me of the Lewis Black sketch where he declares “the end of the universe” when he discovers a Starbucks across the street from another Starbucks. Duane Reade will be open 24 hours, which will probably end up being the downfall of Kings. This “perk” still does not justify its existence. Space is at premium on Bedford and needs to be utilized effectively.

You know what we could use? A Trader Joe’s. Or a Bank of America. Or better yet, how about some green space? Williamsburg and Greenpoint have one of the lowest people to park space ratios in all of Brooklyn at .06 acres per 1,000 residents, when the city planners recommends at least 2.5 acres per 1,000 residents. It’s only getting worse with the likes of the Domino Sugar development and Duane Reades among us.

Let’s face it, we are maybe 40 baby-filled strollers and one more high-rise away from being a perfectly lovely and totally gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood (read: Park Slope). Corporate outposts don’t spring up spontaneously in neighborhoods. They did their cost-volume-profit analysis and, bingo, Williamsburg looks good. Our consumption habits are bringing them in. But when corporate businesses have to waste our time with their march on independent business, we lose out.

So, instead of the hollow-sounding and vague argument of “Saving Williamsburg,” don’t forget that corporate greed is actually wasting our space for their purposes, not ours.
