The My Social List team has covered CMJ extensively over the past two weeks. We’ve listed over two-hundred shows. We’ve interviewed bands. We’ve provided handy guides to each day of the festival, and alerted you to all the best free shows. There’s so much going on, that it’s almost tough to keep track of US, let alone the festival itself.
That’s why I’m posting an official guide to CMJ here on FREEwilliamsburg. Five can’t miss shows for every day of the “music marathon,” in no particular order. There’s still a couple of shows that haven’t been announced (the Brooklyn Vegan day parties come to mind;) but rest assured, they’ll be added to our comprehensive CMJ list as soon as they’re announced. For the budget minded, check out this list of free shows.
Why you should go: Because despite my obvious bias, this is probably the best collection of buzzed artists for the entire week. Don’t believe me? Keep reading, and you’ll see. Oh, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets to this one. (more…)
And just when you were starting to love your 45 minute wait on the L and G lines.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled on Monday four proposals for a scheduled fare increase next March, introducing the possibility of raising the base fare on subways and buses to $2.50 from $2.25 or increasing the cost of a 30-day MetroCard by as much as $21.
Some of the proposals put more burden on travelers who buy their rides one at a time. Others extract more blood from those who buy rides in bulk or spring for an unlimited card. Which do you think is the fairest? Which would you rather see the transit agency implement (which is not necessarily the same question)?
Brooklyn mega-developer Two Trees, which owns much of DUMBO, is poised to put down deeper roots on the Williamsburg Waterfront, where the big old Domino Sugar refinery awaits the developer’s gentrifying magic touch. The Community Preservation Corporation (CPC), which tried and failed to transform the old refinery into a large mixed-use residential and retail development, has closed on a deal to sell the property to Two Trees for $185 million…
The original plans for the development were ambitious and somewhat controversial—some locals worried about another huge influx of Williamsburg residents overwhelming public transportation (the Bedford L stop is already a shitshow at rush hour). The mixed-use 2,200-unit development was supposed to have 660 units of affordable housing, but Two Trees owner Jed Walentas—who also owns The Wythe Hotel—has not committed to that ratio of affordable-to-obscenely expensive. In fact, Two Trees’ plans for the property are still very much TBD.
CPC’s promise of 30 percent affordable housing was never legally binding, but CPC would have taken advantage of the city’s Inclusionary Housing Program, requiring it to set aside 20% of the units at “affordable” below-market rates. In an interview with the Observer in June, Walentas said, “Regardless of what the deal was with the previous people, it’s been several years and nothing’s gotten built. One of the biggest challenges is to make something happen. I do think affordable housing will be at the top of the list, but there’s a wide array of social benefits this project can offer, from schools to open space to community space.”

On Saturday, Into Another played a 60 minute warm up show at Saint Vitus in preparation for their headlining slot at “Revelation Records 25 Festival” at Irving Plaza on Sunday. Watch a video edit of the intimate Greenpoint outing below.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, The Fools Gold team are fucking geniuses. Do yourselves a favor and head over to Public Assembly and catch The Suzan. I shot them over a year ago. If they managed to get better from the perfection I saw the last time you people are in for a treat!
I know everyone is so excited for CMJ! I’m going to be posting a bunch of cool bands/showcases I’m all worked up for as the week goes on. Tres Mack posted this video last week and I’ve been worked up ever since. I can’t wait to catch Black Light Dinner Party at Pianos on 10/17. I love their tunes. Can’t wait to hear them live.
Full line up is as followed:
Devin, La Big Vic (upstairs), Black Light Dinner Party, Fletcher C. Johnson (upstairs), Sleepies, Emma Louise (upstairs), Chains of Love, Incan Abraham (upstairs), Bad Cop, Starred (upstairs)
I was invited by the gentlemen of Quiet Loudly to come check out their set over at Shea Stadium this Friday. I got there a little late. I believe I may have missed the first band. Sorry Libel, don’t worry I’ll catch up to you in the near future I promise. The first band I saw was Maquina Supervium. From the beginning I got gut punched by Nikkie fucking killing it on the drums. Me and Max(Lead singer of Quiet Loudly) didn’t even say anything to eachother. It was one of those moments where you make eye contact and just nod your head in approval like, “hell yea they’re fucking shit up!” The entire night was packed with beautiful music. So pretty. A night filled with roses and shit to the ears. I really enjoyed them. Check this clip out I shot. Rad stuff. Enjoy!
I went over to Shea Stadium for the first time on Friday. I really enjoyed it. I’d love to own something along the lines of Shea. It’s like a big loft with a huge stage and a bunch of rooms. Reminds me of the Live at the Loft show. My buddies from Quiet Loudly invited me over for an intimate set. I’m use to seeing them on some huge stage with a bunch of people and I can barely move to capture anything. This place was big enough that a decent amount of people could relax in comfort and I could have some fun shooting. This clip is long overdue. Glad I finally got a really cool one of you dudes. Enjoy!
