Incredible Footage Of Hurricane Sandy Shot in Williamsburg

Filmmaker John Mattiuzzi:

When I set out to film my neighborhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn the night of the hurricane, I did not anticipate the footage I was about to film. My main goal was to make a short film of whatever I captured that night. A small art film was the idea. But after the explosion, things quickly changed for me. Two weeks later, I finally had time to edit this film together, and show a small perspective of the storm: “A One Block’s Story.”

Make Easy Vegan Truffled Mashed Potatoes for your Burg-Family Thanksgiving

For your Williamsburg family thanksgiving, I recommend keeping it simple. Even if you’re no culinary expert, these potatoes are easy, and truffle oil makes it fancy tasty. Open up a bottle of Wild Turkey to keep it festive, or make this. Put on a record, and whip up these bad boys. People will be all like, damn, them’s good taters.

2 lb. fingerling or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
4 large cloves garlic, peeled and halved
2-3 Tbs. truffle oil
1 Tbs. finely chopped parsley

1. Bring potatoes, garlic, and enough water to cover all by 1 inch to a boil in medium saucepan or one of those aluminum things you get at the bodega. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer 20 minutes, or until potatoes are soft when pricked with fork or a chopstick or something. Drain, but hold on to 1 cup of that liquid potato gold.

2. Pour another drink.

3. Return potatoes and garlic to saucepan; mash with cooking water you held on to until smooth and mashed potatoey. Stir in truffle oil and parsley, and season with salt and pepper.

Careful with the truffle oil, less is more. I can’t say the same for the Wild Turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

VIDEO: Rush Midnight’s Twin Shadow-Produced ‘Crush’

Out now on Cascine, Rush Midnight‘s +1 EP is a plethora of tropical vibes that’s sure to make your baby-making parts feel all sorts of tingling. Russ Manning’s moniker, Rush Midnight, is equally dichotomous as the former Twin Shadow bassist’s solo debut record – perfectly rushed beats set the danceable rhythmic pace, while each track drips with breathy lyrics that after dark is made of.

Check out the video for “Crush” below, featuring NYC subway breakdancers W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew and produced by none other than George Lewis Jr. himself:

Resident Starts Petition: Wants ‘East Williamsburg’ to Secede From That Other, ‘More Hip’ Williamsburg

Gothamist interviewed him:

“I live in Williamsburg,” Ian MacAllen tells us. “Or East Williamsburg. It all depends on the year, the real estate broker, the cab driver, the girl you are trying to impress. For people who know the difference, I tell them Graham Avenue.” His petition, which calls on the federal government to “peacefully grant the neighborhood of East Williamsburg to secede from Williamsburg and create a new, hipper neighborhood,” currently has one signature. But once the hardcore punk DIY crowd at East Williamsburg’s Huckleberry Bar hears about this, it’s going to catch fire.

Here is MacAllen’s reason for the petition — which currently has 5 signatures:

The founding hipsters first arrived on Bedford Avenue two decades earlier convinced that the East Village was “overpriced” and that more generally, Manhattan was “so over.”
In recent years, the trustifarians have turned the Bedford Avenue area into a disneyland of fashionable shops and expensive cocktail bars. The baby-bankers living in the glass, waterfront towers have pushed out the smack junkies and complain to the police about “noise” from rock musicians.
As such, the grittier East Williamsburg would prefer to disassociate from Williamsburg as a fully separate and independent neighborhood. The people of East Williamsburg actually have real jobs. Their shops are not particularly fashionable. Some of the bars are genuinely dangerous dives. Please allow the neighborhood to secede.

Williamsburg Cinemas Finally Opening Next Month

Now, we’ll never have to venture into Manhattan on the weekend!

The final touches on Williamsburg Cinemas, Elgart’s long-planned seven-auditorium movie hub on Grand Street and Driggs Avenue, will wrap up this weekend for the 1,000-seater theater to open in December, he said.

“We were planning on opening Nov. 2…then Sandy hit,” said Elgart, the theater’s owner and operator.

The Department of Buildings’ final inspection of the space has been delayed by post-hurricane demands on the agency’s time, Elgart said.
“We were going to start with the ‘Life of Pi’ and the new James Bond movie,” he said. “Now we’re shooting for Christmas titles.”

Elgart, who already owns Cobble Hill Cinemas and Kew Gardens Cinemas, touted the theater’s 3D screens, 7.1 surround sound, “rocking chair seating,” and mix of indie and blockbuster movies.
“We’ll be showing ‘The Hobbit’ in 3D,” he said of one of the first planned films.
