Can't we all just leave Anton Newcombe alone?

anton.jpg

Sure, the incredibly talented — and, incidentally, incredibly nice — Anton Newcombe has a notoriously short fuse (see Dig!), but getting your van and equipment stolen is enough to piss anyone off. Give the band their shit back. We were hoping to see Brian Jonestown Massacre play an all acoustic show tonight at Pianos. Hopefully, the show will go on. More on the theft via Brooklyn Vegan. (We tried to catch BJM at Northsix for CMJ on Saturday, but when we arrived at the club at 1am some Wiccan, Black Sabbath obssessed band named Witch who was slotted before them was still setting up. We were too drunk to hang around and were afraid of Witch's drummer who looked like a cross between Garth Algar and a professionally certified chaotic evil D&D dungeon master with infinite hit points.)

Drunk fans love to heckle Anton, knowing he'll lash out. Warning: he may kill you if you heckle him Tuesday night if the show goes on as scheduled. In the mean time, be on the look out for these things on Ebay and in pawn shops.

Anton was in an arty 4AD style band called Homeland in OC around 87. They were actually really great, and have a full album's worth of material that I wish he would release. If you can find the Ultraviolet Compiliaton from LA circa 1989 on Sketch records.. Check out their tune 'Eleven is Waiting'..

GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a few fights with him. He is sooo honest, that he doesn't have a filter, and just tells you how he feels about you.. Regardless of how angry you feel about it.. This causes fights!!

I am so proud of they guy!! I'll bet he would tell me to fuck off!!

IF he keeps making them, I'll keep listening!!

Anton (Tony as I know him ) is a life long friend I grew up with here in Newport, and we were two of the first punks to evolve at the early age of 10 years old. Tony is an individualist who has always been creative when it came to taking things a bit over the edge or testing the boundaries of social image or perception. A couple of friends and I pierced our ears which was a pretty punk thing to do back then and being 10 years old. Then we saw Tony walking down the halls with his piercing, only he had a real pigeon claw dangling from his. He showed us up, and that is just Tony! God Bless him then and Now!

I'm not so sure about how nice Anton is after asking him about a bulletin with the subject "we don't give a shit about arabs... we only care about china" he refused to engage in a conversation about it and simply insulted me. The bulletin contains quotes from other people that he had pasted in but he didn't appear to give his own opinion so I asked him what the subject matter was about, especially the bit about Arabs. His answer was to tell me to watch the news and look at his myspace profile, which I do and did but could not find any reference. I thanked him for responding but told him that it didn't answer my questions so he insulted me by calling me "dumb as dirt". Charming.

And by the way, Witch rocks and so does J. Mascis. He's a fucking guitar god.

by the way, Witch's drummer is *J MASCIS*

I agree. You don't know him so — Everyone leave Anton alone and just enjoy the music. He's a good friend of mine and I've witnessed the shit he puts up with — all the assholes who think its fun to taunt him. I'd kick your ass too.

Well said! I wish people would just leave him alone. Dig! was a good film and all, but as with most doc/rock/mockumentaries, there's an angle and a lot of context removed in the editing rooms.

I think Anton is a genius; so immensely talented, gifted and very possibly, extremly misunderstood.
