Letterman Rips O'Reilly a New Asshole

2006-01-03-CBSLSDL.jpg

The old David Letterman is back. Unlike all the other talking heads on talk television, he's begun to actually speak his mind again, like he did early in his career. We started watching him again a couple of years ago and he just keeps getting better. Last night, he told Bill O'Reilly that "about 60 percent of what you say is crap." Watch the Windows video here. Quicktime video here. O'Reilly was clearly fazed. And read some highlights below [via Newsbusters]. Go Dave!

Letterman: “How can you possibly take exception with the motivation and the position of someone like Cindy Sheehan?”

O’Reilly: “Because I think she’s run by far-left elements in this country. I feel bad for the woman.”

Letterman: “Have you lost family members in armed conflict?”

O’Reilly: “No, I have not.”

Letterman: "Well, then you can hardly speak for her, can you?"

....

Letterman: "Yeah, but I think there’s something, this fair and balanced. I'm not sure that it's, I don't think that you represent an objective viewpoint."

....

Letterman: “[w]hy are we there [Iraq] in the first place? [applause] The President himself, less than a month ago said we are there because of a mistake made in intelligence. Well, whose intelligence? It was just somebody just get off a bus and handed it to him?... I agree with you that we have to support the troops... However, however, that does not eliminate the legitimate speculation and concern and questioning of ‘Why the Hell are we there to begin with?’"

Comments

Go Dave. My parents used to record his show every night and we'd all watch it as a family the following evening in the '80s. I'm so glad someone has the balls to put O'R in his place and catch him with his pants down.

did any of you actually watch the video? I'm no fan of O'rieley, but letterman comes off looking like a total moron.

I mean seriously, he condemns o'rieley then admits to never having seen the show? He "read" the he was biased?

Goddamn idiotic.

O'Reilly and Fox News are biased.

No doubt about it, is there? They represent a particular ideology and a worldview that is favorable to the Republican party.

However, when Republicans for decades complained about equivalent biases at places like CBS News and the NY Times, they were utterly ignored.

If liberal Democrats want to *learn* from O'Reilly rather than have a few laffs at his ideological blindness, they might begin by appreciating the realizaton he affords them -- this is how their counterparts have felt about CBS and CNN for many years now.

To ridicule Fox but not CBS is just some cheerleader shit: my team's gonna kick your teams ass.

Lets be more constructive.

Catch O Reilly with his pants down? Letterman made a complete fool of himself.

"I am not smart enough to debate you point by point but I have a feeling that 60% of what you say is crap". Brilliant! Stick it to him Dave.

Let the Debates begin, Scratch the winter games this year, I wanna get these evil doers out from behind their team masscots and onto the debate field. I say, It's open season. If you put it out(Billy), than be prepaired to take a salvo from those who may support the "American Way". That is, before the Multinational Corp bought the elections and redesigned our international agenda. The view from overseas villifies US imperialistic methods. This war has created more terrorist cells, and lastly, can anyone expect that region to maintain democratic reforms after our troops are gone??? Save the troops, get out, fix the US instead!

Yeah Christo...you tellem maaan!

To whoever thinks that we should respect both sides instead of our own liberal views, that's a bunch of BS in this modern world. I cannot respect a viewpoint that condones what's happening in Iraq. I cannot condone a viewpoint that wants to criminalize abortion. Just about everything else that goes on with that party line is completely abominable, and tip-toeing and walking on eggshells won't solve anything. That's what liberals have been doing for decades. It's time to stoop to their level.

PS - you know how I'm sure I'm on the right side? All the conservatives LOOK evil. Just think about it.

Nice job of selectively quoting the text of the interview to only show Dave in a good light. Sheesh! How can you laughingly call O'Reilly a liar, while you employ the same tactics yourself--skewing the data for your own purposes? Reading the whole interview, it's pretty clear there's was no asshole ripping on either side, although, when the cheap asides to the audiance are taken out of the equation, O'Reilly certainly came across more level headed and rational.

it is about time these right wing idiots and
scumbag supporters at fox got put in their place.
go dave..........

>it is about time these right wing idiots and
scumbag supporters at fox got put in their place.
go dave..........

It might be about time alright, but this performance sure as hell wasn't it.

Jon Stewart vs Tucker Carlson = Ripped a new asshole

O'Reilly vs Letterman = Draw at best
(though I don't know how anyone but a mindless "our-side-always-wins" cheerleader can truly say Letterman handled himself well)

Allright, y'all. I'm not a RePOOHblikahn, but Letterman lost the exchange. Yeah, he got in a funny one liner or two. But he admitted that he doesn't watch O'Reilly's show so he has no grounds to complain. It's idiotic for anyone - left or right - to sound off on matters they don't have a fucking clue about. Letterman is just another empty suit media blowhard...just like O'Reilly. There's not much difference.

It is as impossible to argue with a Republican as it is was for Dave to get a straight answer out of O'Reilly. Every intelligent well crafted question by Dave was sidestepped by O'Reilly and followed up with a story about a school district or a little town or some other asinine anecdote.

Right wingers for the most part are like Jesus Freaks. They already have their mind made up, and they will never divert from that viewpoint. It doesn't matter how well crafted your comment is, if it does not agree with their frame of thinking, you're wrong. Most O'Reilly supporters try to shout you down with insults and expletives as well.

Let's not stoop down to their level, and if they refuse to open their eyes and ears, why engage in conversation?

Rob, congrats on getting the wingnuts to crawl back to your comments section. Nothing is more entertaining than watching nutters defend subhuman pond scum like Bill O'Reilly.

Life is good.

Furthermore, the true victim's of this "Us vs Them" mentality are the American people. We the people should collectively choose the most qualified persons to govern our nation. It is not a contest to see what team wins the most elections. It's about choosing the person that the majority agree will be the most capable at their position.

Often I hear Republican supporters post comments such as "Go win an election", as though they were personally elected Senator or whatnot. This is not baseball or football, it's government, it's about the people who make the laws which govern our lives.

Personally I feel the ideal person to govern my life is honest and runs a transparent government, a minimum of secrets if any. And one that hires people based on their experience and abilities, not because they have friends.

Use your brain, don't parrot what you hear on the radio or the news.

Nice spew of posts taking the "Republican's suck" route rather then put together any kind of intelligent response.

Ya know, this is a microcosm of the interview that spawned this thread.

One side resorting to name calling and knee-jerk, emotional responses. The other trying to take an objective look at the reality of the situation.

No wonder you insist Dave "ripped a new asshole" on O'Reilly. You guys either don't care about reasoned discourse, or you wouldn't recognize it if it bit you on said ass.

No wonder you insist Dave "ripped a new asshole" on O'Reilly. You guys either don't care about reasoned discourse, or you wouldn't recognize it if it bit you on said ass.

Umm, that should be "said asshole."

There's some reasoned discourse for you. In a thread about Bill O'Reilly. Who we all know is the king of reasoned discourse.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that both Republicans and Democrats are playing the same tired game here. First off, Republicans aren't the only "Jesus Freaks" out there. Remember, the Civil Rights leaders mostly came from the church (Martin Luther King, Jesse Jackson---both reverends; Dorothy Day of the Catholic Worker movement, a nun). So to think that it's only conservatives that are the religious people out there is misinformation at best.

This whole idea of Republicans = Evil Democrats = pure and noble is just bullshit all the way around. There are good and bad people on both sides of the aisle.

It just gets tiring hearing this same old tired story over and over again. Sanchez refered to some as being "Cheerleaders" for their ideology. How true.

"Right wingers for the most part are like Jesus Freaks"..."congrats on getting the wingnuts to crawl back to your comments section"..."you know how I'm sure I'm on the right side? All the conservatives LOOK evil".
If this is how you view the world than I feel sorry for you. If you are unable to discuss the issues like an adult than be quiet. All you succeed in doing is exposing your ignorance and hurting the credibiliy of your cause.

"How can you possibly take exception with the motivation and the position of someone like Cindy Sheehan?”
Cindy Sheehan is choosing to use her son's tragic death to publicly state her opposition to the war. If one disagrees with the ideas she expresses publicly they have the right to voice their disagreement with her publicly.

>" wouldn't recognize it if it bit you on said ass.

Umm, that should be "said asshole.">

Thanks for the correction. If only you watched the Letterman/O'Reilly interview with such a critical eye...but in that regard, you seemingly can't tell your ass (or asshole) from a hole in the ground.

Nice job...only posting the winners that Letterman got in...not including O'reilly's winners...not very "fair and balanced."

My favorite part: O'reilly says "above all, we need to support our troops," (dead silence from audience)...a few minutes later Letterman says "I agree with you that we need to support our troops." (audience applauds wildly) Were some of you tools on this message board in the audience? Or did they just bring in the same audience from Bill Mahrs show?

Put simply: it's hopeless. The parrots have taken over both sides of the political debate, squawking the party line back and forth to one another. The sad thing is that many don't even know what they are talking about. They just take the position that will make them seem "cool" and "hip" to their respective peers. I find in a lot of cases, once you prod a little bit, you will see that those who are the most vocal about their political stance tend to live and act in direct opposition to what they say they believe in.

One good example is what you just pointed out. O'Reilly says we have to support our troops and is met with dead silence. Letterman says it, the audience applauds. Not too hard to imagine. A conservative says it, you can't agree. If a liberal says it, then you agree 100%. That should tell you enough.

I like how you take Letterman blanket statements and post them as proof of him wining the debate. Come on, post Bills responses. Oh wait, you can because that would deem your article erroneous. Well since you can't effectively report, I'll do it for you. Sorry to take the wind out of your sails.

Letterman: “Yeah, but I think there’s something, this fair and balanced. I'm not sure that it's, I don't think that you represent an objective viewpoint.”

O’Reilly: “Well, you’re going to have to give me an example if you're going to make those claims.”

Letterman: “Well I don’t watch your show so that would be impossible.”

O’Reilly: “Then why would you come to that conclusion if you don't watch the program?”

Letterman: “Because of things that I’ve read, things that I know.”

Doesn't really look like Bill got ripped a new asshole now does it. As far as your reporting goes, I'll pass on reading your website in the future.

Thank god Sergio the phony centrist got here to explain everything for us.

"There are good and bad people on both sides of the aisle."

Agreed in full. There have been great Republican presidents in the past, and hopefully, there will be in the future. Unfortunately, Bush isn't one of them. He represents the worst of the party.

At one time I was a Fox fan. Until I watched the people on Fox rip their guests apart. It is good to see one of them get it for a change. I think guests should be treated like guests, and idiots treated like what they are, maybe when they really become fair and balanced, I will start watching them again. Until then, I am still your fan. It will take more than fair and balanced for them to get me back. They really do have to be fair, and balanced.
Jim; "The Early Light"

Why was O'Reillys comments omitted by this site. How can one possibly come to a conclusion on any topic without all the facts or opinions. Dave once again proves he is a moron by accusing Bill of being full of crap 60% of the time and yet admits he never has seen his show. Unreal! Dave, your theoretical world would be great but at least I can see and face reality.

I use to be a big fan of David Letterman, in fact over the past 20 years I gone to his show five or six times. Now let me tell you something, since that insulting interview he did with Bill O'Reilly, I have lost all respect and admiration for the man. I now see he is a mean spirited, narcissistic jerk.

I see on tonight’s show he’s kissing the fat ass of Rosie O’Donnell.

I hate to have to tell you people with the blinders on. Bill O’Reilly speaks the truth.

haha, sanchez. david letterman "read" of o'reillys known ties with the bush administration.

Wow. Go David! Show that moron who's boss!

O'Reilly is a shmuck.Only senile
people believe a word of his verbal excrement.

Bill O'Reilly spouts out more crap than anyone on tv. How the hell can you say he speaks the truth. O'Reilly is the biggest con job I have ever seen, i seriously doubt he is dumb enough to believe half the shit he says.

Bill O'Reilly is the most fascistic, narcissistic, supercilious and puerile fool on television since Pinky Lee! He is a liar, a bully and a nazified cheat. People who watch him and like what they see use their heads as suppositories.

Besides that, if you ignore that, he's a hell of a great guy. Patriotism is the last hiding place of scoundrels.

I had a dream that I shot Bill right between the eyes. He reminds me of an American Adolf Hitler, without the death toll. His views may have been acceptable in the 50's before we had a revolution but the world has changed since then and if he cant keep up with change than he has no purpose to be spouting bullshit to everyone in the world. Peace be with him (6ft below).

You know, that tool was my High School Freshman Social Studies teacher. What an embarrassment.

I hate Bill O'Reilly. I hope that pc. of crap gets hit by a bus. Then I hope wild dogs urinate on his road kill body. This country would be better off if his program and the entire Fox network were obliterated from the Earth!!

Have a great Day!!

i think u guys dislike o reilly bc his beliefs are different than yours and he has the balls to stand up for them. bill o'reilly is a great american.
