The spelling of "preved" as was reiterated above is deliberately mangled. Such spelling is used by the russian counterculture to emphasize the illiteracy of most people and condemn their attempts to communicate when they are clearly not culturally par up to the level.

it started with the thread on the dirty.ru (you could call this site "russian metafilter" - it's not the same, but pretty close). i don't remember the details but it is obviously that 'preved' meme was limited to dirty.ru and wasn't so popular for 4-5 months at least.

it's unclear for me who found john lurie's picture and modified it with 'preved' (slightly altered version contains 'preved' instead of 'surpriso'). but all this craze with 'preved' begun with this picture. i suppose that most of the russian internet users know nothing about John Lurie and they don't care about it. but me personally (and thousands of russian internet users) thinks that altered picture is very funny. i can't explain why - maybe it is the result of the combination of childish style of painting, adult theme and nonsense from the bear's mouth. unfortunately most of the latest pictures are dumb imitations (and the pic in this post is good example - it's not funny at all).

and the last.
although the literally translation of 'preved' is 'hi' or 'hello' (or 'hallow' since 'preved' is misspelled version of 'privet'), the best translation in this case is 'surpriso', i believe.

Hi (privet!). I'll try to explain it. It's not easy though.
The success is due to both the Lurie's picture and the 'preved' word itself. Together they make people laugh.
Right, 'preved' is distorted 'privet'=hi (rather than hallo). There is kind of fashion in Russia right now -- people invent funny distorted versions of Russian words. It began with just mocking bad grammar writing but soon transformed to more sophisticated distortions -- so the 'privet' sounds like 'prevet' but never like 'preveD'.
So there is a lot of people who fight against such 'punk-style Russian'. The picture with Preved has fallen to this ground and made kind of explosion.
PS. I love John Lurie and Lounge Lizzard music (especially Mark Ribot)

The painting that this comes from was the cover image for John Lurie's show at Roebling Hall Gallery- Chelsea last January. Their mailing list includes many galleries located in central Moscow. Since that was the first time that paining was shown I think that it's through those galleries that the image was passed on. Why they like it so much???? Who knows- they're Russians. Don't give them money or matches.
