Christians Sue for Right to Hate Gays

From the LA Times:
Ruth Malhotra went to court last month for the right to be intolerant.Malhotra says her Christian faith compels her to speak out against homosexuality. But the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she's a senior, bans speech that puts down others because of their sexual orientation.
Malhotra sees that as an unacceptable infringement on her right to religious expression. So she's demanding that Georgia Tech revoke its tolerance policy. The religious right aims to overturn a broad range of common tolerance programs: diversity training that promotes acceptance of gays and lesbians, speech codes that ban harsh words against homosexuality, anti-discrimination policies that require college clubs to open their membership to all...
In the public schools, an Ohio middle school student last year won the right to wear a T-shirt that proclaimed: "Homosexuality is a sin! Islam is a lie! Abortion is murder!" But a teen-ager in Kentucky lost in federal court when he tried to exempt himself from a school program on gay tolerance on the grounds that it violated his religious beliefs...
The open question is what constitutes harassment, what's a sincere expression of faith — and what to do when they overlap.
Evidently, Jesus wants his followers to wear God Hates Fags T-Shirts. We must have skipped over that part of the bible somehow.

I hate it when people misuse their rights and over up their rudeness with the first amendment. Get Real. that ghf.com website less. How can someone misuse the Bible like that and still feel like their being a christian?

I think that the idea of "What would Jesus Do" applies in this situation as well. You want to lead a Christian life. How about this. Who Would Jesus Verbally or Symbolically Abuse/Hurt. Nobody! I do not necessarily have a position on whether or not god exists but I do know plenty about Christianity and Theology in general and I can garauntee that if there is a God and you are really a Christian then there is no room for hate in any of your hearts. This is not stupid. This is not rediculous it is smart and logical. I believe in freedom of speech but even more important than freedom of speech I believe in being a nice person. Treating others with respect is more important than going to church and reading the bible. This is not written anywhere it is just common sense. This girl is not a christian. Try again sweetheart.

Actually, the thing with the First is that the limits for free speech should only be of two kinds: either a tort scenario based on damages or criminal prosecution for i) difamation or ii) exceptions of truth.
The First should be enforced wether somebody agrees or not with the message, and it doesn't matter who gets hurt, as long as we have remedies for the damages on a ex-post basis.
We shall keep in mind that discrimination can be fought with other means that won't injure the First.

The first amendment does not protect all speech. The right to free speech is often defined on a case by case basis since the Bill of Rights, which is most notable if you examine the history of court cases over obscenity, sexual harrassment, and threats. Because of this, the question is not whether these people have the right to express themselves, but whether or not their "self-expression" crosses the line into what a judge will rule as obscenity, sexual harrassment, or threats. The art world, the music industry, and the pornography industry deal with these legal issues on a frequent basis, and alot of these cases are brought forward by Evangelical-Based and Right Wing groups, often demanding censorship or stripped funding (look at the NEA). Maybe it's time we fire back with legal recourse and keep it coming, instead of giving them the opportunity to sue our public schools or institutions. Of course, then Jesse Helms might call us all homo-lovin pussies. Jesse Helms can suck it.

We're not questioning their right to free speech... just drawing attention to their obvious parallels to other hate groups
