It's Halloween!

kids-halloween-costumes-1.jpgAnd there's a lot going on. Here are our picks:

A Flavorpill Halloween at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple with music by The Very Best

DAYTIME Dirt-Deth Rally at Robertas w/ Ninjasonik & Anamanaguchi

The Danger Party at 3rd Ward

Livin' for the Citaaayyy w/ the Rude Dudes at Legion Bar, Halloween Edition

Deer Tick play the songs of the Sex Pistols at Brooklyn Bowl

The Vice 15 year anniversary party (invite only) with Bad Brains and Jesus Lizard

Spooky Burt Bacharach and a Satanic Three Ring Circus at Issue Project Room

Obits, Pissed Jeans, Dum Dum Girls, Golden Triangle at Secret Project Robot

The Annihilation of Oz at Warsaw:

The self-proclaimed "Greatest Halloween Party Ever" is back for its fifth year, boasting a ball pit (to bring back fun, if unsanitary, memories of childhood), an hour of free beer (to relish in your current mature state), two hours of free pierogies, and three bands (the Vandelles, Toys in Trouble, and Dragons of Zynth). The theme is "The Annihilation of Oz," which is a warped imagining of what Dorothy left behind in Oz, where the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion battle evil Glinda for control of Oz and end up hanged from the gates in Emerald City as a warning to future do-gooders.

And of course, Todd P has 2 great events:

Deer Tick Does Sex Pistols

4039485583_5cf9f634a5.jpg

If you're one of many planning on seeing Deer Tick play the songs of the Sex Pistols Saturday night at Brooklyn Bowl, we're told it's not yet sold out but will likely be soon. A limited number of costumed attendees will get in for free, but "only if you get there early!" So, don't think you can roll up in your ironic hipster grifter outfit at 9pm and expect to be let in. Doors are at 6, and honestly, tickets are only $5.

The Office Jam: "Male Prima Donna"

If You Hear The Clown Horn, Run

A woman wrote us this morning about a surreal attempted mugging in Williamsburg:

I almost got mugged by a group of girls last night.

Last night at around 1 AM I was walking home down N. 7th St. between Havemeyer and Roebling. I'm a small person and I was by myself. There's a big empty lot on the North side of the street and as I was walking past it a very loud rubber horn noise issued from behind the fence. Like one of those plastic party horns that clowns carry. Which seemed really out of place. As I approached the intersection three girls were walking through it (not together, walking in different directions). One of them ended up walking a little bit in front of me and then turned around and started heading towards me. As she passed me she grabbed my coat and started punching me in the head. She was trying to grab my bag from my shoulder but mostly just kept hitting me. I started screaming and thankfully there was a guy very close by who came running up and chased her off. Her friend, one of the other girls from the intersection, started to drag her away and they ran. We called the cops but couldn't locate these girls, who looked to be in their late teens, early twenties maybe. The girl who was hitting me was heavy set and around 5'7" tall. Her friend was skinnier.

This is all to say- if you hear a clown horn noise, call the cops and/or start running. Please let people know about this, it was definitely an organized group lying in wait for a good target to walk by.

If you have information or a similar tale, let us know.

Brooklyn at the Guggenheim, Part III: Yeasayer and Tanlines

gug.jpg

It's that time of month again-- the Guggenheim's It Came From Brooklyn series is in part three mode, with Yeasayer and CMJ standout Tanlines.

The Yeasayer boys, who built a studio in upstate New York in which to record their second album (with the help of engineer friends, of course), are planning a 3-D light show with cycles of color and animation projected onto the wall of the Frank Lloyd Wright rotunda, for a “synesthetic experience of music and light” (in Kandinsky’s spirit maybe), so it'll be a blast to see all the Uptown art folk walking around in their special glasses. I don't know how many more times I can call this event magical, so lets go on a synonym parade-- whimsical, entrancing, spellbinding, magnetic. There is a spirit in the air at the Guggenheim shows that echoes along the curved white walls, and allows you to enjoy a performance as you could at no other venue. Coming off of last week's festivities, this event is a welcomed breath of freshness, with a Brooklyn edge.

Along with the musical performances, readings from Brooklyn author Rachel Sherman and the MC funnies of Max Silvestri are to be expected. Besides, Yeasayer won't have any tour dates for a while, unless you're making it out to Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Friday, October 30th @ the Guggenheim-- get your tickets here!

The Ten Most Dubious Films included in the Criterion Collection

crit-550x412.jpg

I just wrote a snarky little listicle for Vice:

To be released by Criterion is the benchmark of excellence. Their 25-year-old catalog includes indispensable work from masters including Cocteau, Renoir, Maysles, Kubrick, Cronenberg, Godard, Kurosawa, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Hitchcock, Sturges, and, of course, Fellini.

It’s an impressive list of talent, which is why you can imagine my surprise when I arrived at the director responsible for film #40 in their catalog. Michael Bay. That’s right, Michael Bay, the dung beetle of cinematic vapidity, best known for his unparalleled skill at rolling oversized balls of shit into our nation’s cineplexes. If you’re not familiar with his work--is this possible?--Bay is responsible for Bad Boys I & II, Pearl Harbor, and Transformers, not to mention the career of Megan Fox. (She hates him too). Currently, Bay is remaking The Birds, which I’m assuming will be re-imagined to include a bikini-clad Maxim covergirl who blows away blood-sucking zombie pigeons with a grenade launcher.

Check out the list here.

Bowl Free M-Th at Brooklyn Bowl

blw-gadberry-1-042307blog.jpg

Brooklyn Bowl continues its mating dance with my heart by slowly turning its steel exterior warm with its great shows and now, free bowling. For the month of November, y'all can bowl for free every weekday but Friday from 6-7pm. Free shoes too!

Das Racist is playing tonight with The Tony Castles, also free, which is awesome but leads me to believe that this place is operating entirely on revenue gained from those $13 shakes.

Random Service Announcement: The Internets are Jammed

roadrunner_twc.jpg

Time Warner Cable's "high speed" internet is maxed to the apple core in my part of Williamsburg. They tell me this is a node problem, meaning too many of you are up in TWC's grills downloading jams. If you're having a problem, and have been for some time, email me and lets figure something out.

Update: I've heard from a few readers and it appears the problem seems to be centered off the Lorimer stop, running along Metropolitan. If you're nearby, and have similar problems, please reach out. Power in numbers, my friends.

Best of CMJ: Caught on Tape by Ray Concepcion

The first night of CMJ, enjoying happy hour drinks at Music Hall of Wburg, I wondered why I was there so early. Spending an entire day bouncing around the Lower East Side, namely at The Music Slut & Sneak Attack Media's Pianos showcase, I needed a break from first day insanity (read: free Hornitos frozen margaritas). So in the quiet cavern below the stage, I waited for my (lack of a better word) date, and fellow music writer. After realizing I had caught Fanfarlo earlier that day, and have seen The Antlers a number of times, we ditched the Brooklyn Vegan party before anybody even got there (with semi-false intentions of returning) and mosied down to MonkeyTown for the unofficial Chocolate Bobka and Underwater Peoples showcase.

It stands to be my favorite show of CMJ-- and if you were following our twitter last week, you know we saw a lot of them. Fluffy Lumbers killing a solo set, Julian Lynch via video chat, the NYC premiere of seriously experimental and enchanting Africa Germany Germany..., and lovely ladies of Mountain Man, who filled in for Ducktails, closing out with a serenade of hauntingly raw echoes. Thank goodness Ray Concepcion was there to catch the magic, and major thanks for not including footage of me scarfing down a burger-- bc I know he has it:

Check out Surfer Blood at Piano's through Ray's lens after the jump...

Defending the Bar

32_43_defendbrooklyn01_i.jpg

"With one hand, they pour your drinks. With the other, they carry a bat." So begins this thrilling piece at the Brooklyn Paper that looks at what weapons Brooklyn bartenders keep behind the bar.

We learn 4th Avenue Pub in Park Slope stocks a wooden bat, the East River Bar by the foot of the W'burg bridge keeps pepper spray at arm's length, and Duff’s just relies on their patrons to get their back with the weaponry on the walls.

“There are tons of weapons all over the place,” she said, a mace, a sword and other objets de guerre within reach. “They are more for show, but they’re accessible to us. Big swords and stuff like that.”

Bartenders: look into the gun theme and hang a few shotguns on the walls. Y'know, "for show."

Florence and The xx "You've Got the Love" Video

Yes, The xx are all the rage right now. Yes, the album is awesome. Yes, they kinda make you wanna take a nap while you're watching them on stage- don't we all wish their live sets evoked the kind of dancing shown in the video for Florence and the Machine's (covered/remixed by The xx) "You've Got the Love"?

Cassette from My Ex: Stories and Soundtracks of Lost Loves

cover_photo.jpg

I'm in a great new anthology called Cassette from My Ex that hit the shelves on Tuesday. Here's the scoop:

Cassette from My Ex: Stories and Soundtracks of Lost Loves shares sixty hilarious, nostalgic and heartbreaking stories stories all about crushes and mixtapes. CFME compiles stories from some amazing writers and musicians: author Rick Moody, The Magnetic Fields’ Claudia Gonson, This American LIfe’s Starlee Kine, The New Yorker’s Ben Greenman, Blender Magazine’s Joe Levy, Improv Everywhere’s Charlie Todd, Mortified’s David Nadelberg—even a new story from the godfather of the genre, Rob Sheffied. We put a ton of love into the design, too, with 224 full-color pages designed by noted cassetteophile Lissi Erwin, with cover illustrations by the excellent Hope Gangloff.
You can order Cassette from My Ex here.

There will be a release party at Housing Works in NY tonight, so come on out if you can. (Much more interesting than yelling at a TV screen while men hit balls with bats). Here's the info:

Cassette From My Ex Book Launch and Mixtape Variety Show
Celebrating the release of Cassette From My Ex: Stories and Soundtracks of Lost Loves, editor Jason Bitner presents along with contributors Claudia Gonson (The Magnetic Fields), Joe Levy (Maxim Magazine), and Michael Hearst (One Ring Zero).  Our expert panel will shed light on the power of mixtapes and share their own tales of tapes given and received, crushes turned to heartaches.  And special bonus!  Illustrator Arthur Jones presents his hilarious loss-of-virginity tale as a Post-It Note Story.

Halloween Festival at the City Reliquary

city-reliquary.jpg
The City Reliquary's original sign before it moved to Metropolitan in '06. [image via]

The City Reliquary is proud to host the Southside Halloween Festival, an evening-long multi-disciplinary party with candy, music and games.

Created especially for the City Reliquary, there will be an atmospheric adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," Fortune Teller Mikaela Corbo sharing her gift to all who dare to listen, neighborhood students from El Puente performing a dance act specifically created for this event, and local musician Jeff Davis playing the musical saw! William Allgood will serve as the evening's ghoulish Master of Ceremonies.

There will be games and candy for the young and old alike. The Southside Halloween Festival is produced by local artists Stephen Cedars and Christina Latimer, and is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).

What's a Drano Bomb, Anyways

As you may have heard, a Drano Bomb was detonated by an NYPD bomb squad a little after midnight Saturday night on S. 3rd b/t Roebling and Havemeyer, after being spotted on the sidewalk by an eagle-eyed resident.

For those of you not familiar with Anarchist Cookbook-type humbuggery, a Drano Bomb, as defined by Urban Dictionary, is "the combination of drano and aluminum foil balls in order to create a chemical reaction, that when placed inside a pop bottle, will explode and cause your face to burn off."

Here's a video showing us how it's made, curiously set to the song "Winter Solstice" by The Tea Party:

Leonard Cohen Played at MSG on Friday Night

leonard-cohen_l.jpg

And it was spectacular. Songs like "Bird on a Wire," "Suzanne" and "Everybody Knows" percolated throughout Madison Square Garden for several hours, as Cohen demonstrated that you can still rock out with hat head and sing about naked ladies at age 75. The crowd was composed of about 3/4 people over the age of 50, and to be honest, hanging out with the bubbies was a welcomed alternative to the madness of CMJ that was going on downtown.

Far too many aging performers make their later tours all about huge commercial production standards and vivid on-stage distractions (see: The Rolling Stones, U2), but Cohen's set is still tacked to the essence of his music and poetry. The biggest diversions on Friday were manifested by his appreciative interactions with his backup singers and musicians, and the occasional wild outburst by one of the AARP members in the crowd.

Smiling at his audience, Cohen commented that "I don't know when it is our intention to pass this way again." It was foreboding, kind of sad and made me eternally grateful that I had the chance to see him perform. Read on to the extended entry to see my (somewhat shoddy) iPhone video of "Chelsea Hotel No. 2," for a fuller impression of this classy affair.

Drive Car, See Girl Talk, Avoid New Jersey Teens

gtalk_kia.jpg

The Kia Soul Collective circus is in town this weekend and ready to rock your dirty socks off at a secret Girl Talk show going down at an "undisclosed location" (read: Pier 94 at 55th Street & The West Side Highway) It's free, open to the public, and "includes an opportunity to test-drive the all-new Kia Soul," that isn't necessarily an included opportunity but more like a pay-to-play requirement.

Yea, you have to test-drive Kia's hip new wheels machine in order to enter the premises. But between you and me, we both know that's not the worst thing you've had to do for tickets to a hot show.

And what for the drunks, unlicensed, and disabled Girl Talk fans out there who'd enjoy a beat or two on a Sunday afternoon? I'm told they'll be quietly ushered into the passenger seat and whipped around for a "check this car out bro" ride anyways, which does indeed count for entry.

So, we recommend you check this out. From noon to 7 tomorrow (Saturday), just swing by 151 Orchard Street and whip around in a Kia, and get the critical info to enter Girl Talk on Sunday from 2-7. This might be a rare shot at seeing the guy without a hoard of underage New Jersey mall rats wearing headbands climbing over the fences.

Pope Benedict Offers Full Communion to Anglicans and Rappers

2009-10-22-1_22_042105_pope_benedict.jpg
I've got a new piece over at Huffington Post in response to the Pope's latest ungodliness. Here's a taste:

Perhaps responding to criticism that he's out of step with the times, Benedict extended his invitation to the rap community using language that is most commonly associated with hip hop lyrics.

"Rappers can be assured that I won't be hatin' if they rhyme about ho's and queers. I won't be getting up on their dick, no homo," said Benedict.

Read it all.

Greenpoint: Find This Sex Assault Suspect

greenpointsketch.jpg

On a more serious note, let's use our collective eyeballs and find this dirty sum'bitch who's out there assaulting women. It happened near Diamond Street and Nassau Avenue around 4:30am, and the perp is in his late 30's 20's and about 5 foot 9 inches tall. From 1010Wins:

Police were searching for a suspect Thursday wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a 25-year-old Greenpoint woman who was attacked as she entered her apartment building earlier this week.

If you have any info, call 1-800-577-TIPS or submit a tip online.

A tribute to a tribute for a tribute?

In the beginning, there was just Phoenix's official Lisztomania video. Shortly thereafter, someone decided the song sounded like the soundtrack to every 80's teenage angst-y movie ever made, and the brat pack mash up tribute was born. Then, some cute Brooklynites had too much time on their hands and a nice roof at their disposal, and the Brooklyn Brat pack tribute to a tribute was created. Now, some even cuter kiddos in the Phillipines made a tribute to the Brooklyn tribute.

Where will this Lisztomania tribute video arms race end?

Sexy CMJ Craigslist Round-up!

hipster+computer.jpg

With CMJ comes an influx of young, wide-eyed musicians getting their first taste of big city rock n' roll, so it's only natural that they show up expecting bushels of sex and drugs too. But naturally, we live in an age of Craigslist personals, so some are skipping the effort and hunting digitally.

Like this 26-year old "sexy rocker boy on tour from Chicago," who's here on tour for CMJ. He wants "an attractive, clean, std free woman" to maybe keep him company at the Newark Holiday Inn.

Then there's this guy, who is "looking for cute hipster girls with whom to share my soul, or my CMJ PASS!!!!!!!!" What's it worth to you, cute hipster girls?

Or how about the guy recording PureVolume's showcase at Collective Hardware? He's looking for someone to "have a cozy time with."

And finally, do you need a place to sleep? Are you willing to exchange your company, "perhaps more" for it?

Craigslist is ripe with horny CMJ bros today.

CMJ Is Upon Us, Let's Get Dead

cmj09.jpg

Ok, here is a little FREEwilly CMJ guideline. This "list" includes bands we love and know are amazing live, others that are super hyped but we're not sure are any good, shows you cannot miss, free shows, shows to go to just for the free stuff, bands we've never heard of but will take a chance on, and so on and so forth. But we'll leave it up to you to decide which is which (comment thread, I'm talking to you!). Basically here's a rundown of the things we wish we had a time machine for, in no particular order, officially and unofficially CMJ.

Sadly, this music editor is only one girl, and I'll be trying to keep you posted on what's the shit, and what just smells like it, so follow us on twitter if you're in a stalking kind of mood and wanna buy me a drink. Now to leave you with the famous last words of last year's shenanigans, "Figuratively speaking, it's always CMJ in NYC"

Lots of Cook-offs These Days

SuperStock_1538R-21034.jpg

Williamsburg's got a whole slew of cook-offs to compete in and/or grub down at this weekend. From hummus to apple pie, if you play this right there's no chance you'll wake up Monday skinny and sad.

1. A hummus cook-off, part of a fundraiser for Craig Murphey's Fellowship at Hope Lounge on Saturday (6pm). This is the good-hearted one where money raised goes to literally help the hungry of this city eat.

2. The annual Apple Pie cook-off at Enid's on Saturday around 4, judged by "food experts" like the Brooklyn Kitchen and crew. This one usually inspires a whole slew of "hey look hipsers cooking" stories so watch out for media!

3. The Food Obstructions, er a Sunday evening cook-off that must include one purple ingredient, one locally-sourced ingredient, no pork, fruit, vegetables, and cost no more than $25. Those are the obstructions. This one's at the Gutter at 7:30.

4. And last but not least, this Tuesday will be the fifth annual Casserole Party at Brooklyn Label in Greenpoint. It will be "back and badder than ever," so, yea watch out casserole freaks!

Beyonce, Gaga Shoot Music Video in Greenpoint

Beyonce & Gaga allegedly shot a music video for "Video Phone" in Greenpoint this week. Reports from the scene say they both dressed all crazy -- Beyonce in a feathered dress and Gaga in, lord, who knows I'm guessing a giant light bulb? -- and the site was extremely secure.

From MTV:

On Thursday (October 15), a spokesperson for director Hype Williams confirmed to MTV News that that both Beyoncé and Gaga appear in the "Video Phone" clip, which Williams shot last weekend in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood.

Here's the rumor board.

Hipster Grifter's Next Career Move: Porn?

bucky_to_ja.png ja_to_bucky.pngIf a series of tweets between Animal's Bucky Turco and Burning Angel's Joanna Angel are any indication, the Hipster Grifter is allegedly looking to make a little career move after serving her nine-month sentence in a Utah jail and do some porn, er, pose nude.

Now, she's been published nude before after some photos were leaked on a blog during Hipster Grifter-Gate earlier this year, but this is different. This would be THG posing for Burning Angel, a site that is self-described as, "Alt, Emo, Tattoo, Goth, and Punk Rock hardcore porn at it's best with video, pics and blogs."

For Kari, this is a fantastic development. THG the brand is only getting edgier, and if she keeps sending these letters from a Utah jail that Animal's been publishing, her tattooed star will only shine brighter. And as Bucky tells us, "It can't hurt her resume and she is going to need a job when she gets out."

The correspondence:

Bucky Turco: @JoannaAngel Hey Joanna. The Hipster Grifter once again asked about a photo shoot when she gets out. Do you have an answer for her?

Joanna Angel: @buckyturco yes i would love to have her on the website.

Bucky Turco: @JoannaAngel Cool. I'm gonna print out your tweet and mail it to her. Thanks!

Fly, little USPS delivery man, and send along the printed tweet of news! The media world awaits the impending stream of hotdogs and hallways.

UPDATE!!!1!!: Bucky noticed I missed a rather important tweet in this whole shi-bang, from one Joanna Angel: "@buckyturco tell her I would love to fuck her on camera... I think we'd have a lot of fun =)". Joanna Angel. Wants to fuck. The Hipster Grifter. On camera. Good night, and good luck.

New Chris Taylor (Of Grizzly Bear) 7"

chris-taylr.jpgSince we love all things Grizzly Bear, we'd feel negligent if we failed to share the 411 about Chris Taylor's new project. From Stereogum:

We were recently introduced to Chris Taylor's new label with Ethan Silverman, Terrible Records, via its first release Acrylics earlier this month. CT takes a production credit on that band's debut EP, as he has for Dirty Projectors (Rise Above), Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (self-titled), and Grizzly Bear's Yellow House and Veckatmest. No surprise then that Taylor handles all facets of the release, recording, and production for the solo track "Ghosts," his first issue under the name Cant.
You can sample a new track here. Prepare yourself for some reverb-drenched bliss with the haunting harmonies you've come to expect from Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles. You can buy the 7" here.

Hipsters May Now Be Referred To As Marshmallows

marshman_250.jpg

Hipsters have a reputation for basically being pussies, what with their tight black jeans, ironic haircuts and ability to run from the cops while recording the footage with their iPhones and yelling, "I'm gonna put this on the internets you pigs!" So, naturally, the cops probably don't like that!

Gothamist spotted a twaddler who wrote, "Just found out cops in williamsburg call hipsters marshmallows because we are white and soft," and therefore recommends that this observation becomes reality. So, squishy ones, will you embrace it? Or, are you "offended"?

Help Roberta's Fight For NYC's Food Future

tomato.jpg
Roberta's, our favorite pizza restaurant/tiki bar/sexy staff in all the land, is hosting a benefit party this Tuesday, October 13th, for their newest endeavor-- a one acre commercially-viable rooftop farm in North Brooklyn, the first of it's kind in the world!

Here's what they had to say:

Next spring we’re breaking ground on a one-acre rooftop farm in North Brooklyn. Ben Flanner of Greenpoint’s Rooftop Farm and the resourceful and creative entrepreneurs that brought us Roberta’s have committed to build the first ever commercially-viable rooftop farm in the world. Based on low-input, bare bones efficiency and high-yield organic methods, the farm will offer fresh produce to the community downstairs, bringing food and people closer together in order to address the growing environmental, economic and health problems that face our city and our world.[...]

In 2010 we will build one farm, but our vision is for others to replicate our model and thousands of acres of rooftop throughout the city to be put into agricultural use. This is a call to arms: invest in our farm now, and help us plant the seed for New York’s food future.

Seating is limited, so get your tickets now!

And what does $150 get you, you ask? Let's bullet point, shall we!?

  • A locally grown multi-course meal from the Roberta's crew, including pork from Heritage Farms

  • ENDLESS Wine provided by Regal Imports

  • 5 different kinds of UNLIMITED Beer from Six Point Brewery

  • Food, Beverage, and Dinner Prizes auctioned of by Wild Yaks' Rob Bryn

  • A presentation by Ben Flanner and Annie Novak of Rooftop Farms in Greenpoint

  • And a bunch of special guests including wine and food gurus Joe Bastianich and Mark Ladner of Del Posto, and Tom Mylan and Brent Young of Marlow & Daughters

  • Not to mention, you'll be supporting a really awesome cause, NYC's Food Future!
  • Interview: Steel Phantoms, Keeping Myspace Alive

    steelphantoms.jpg
Steel Phantoms; (from left to right) Adam Fisher, Yos Munro, Aaron Harris

There's a new band in Brooklyn, which comes to no surprise to any of us... At this point music and Brooklyn are pretty much synonymous, not mention, dare I say, redundant. With an overabundance of talent on the scene, one (read: me) could make oneself dizzy-- so what ingredients scream "we're awesome, pay attention to us"?

Ladies & gents, I bring you Steel Phantoms (known for about 5 minutes as the Brass Cups)-- two parts Islands, namely drummer Aaron Harris and the sound engineer from their last tour Adam Fisher (this time on bass), and vocalist Yos Munro channeling a young Jonathan Richman. If you made your way out to Art & Rock 2, you were probably one of the many super impressed peeps in the crowd, not only for the energy these guys evoke, but for a musical trick I've never seen (pulled off well at least, if at all)-- Aaron, on drums, and on lead vocals for about half of the performance... while drumming!

Steel Phantoms is a band to keep an eye on. Since they've only played a handful of what we hope will be tons of shows, we were sure to catch up with the guys earlier this week to see what they're all about. So, befriend the boys on their brand new Myspace page (just about the only thing the almost dead social networking website is good for nowadays)! They'll be playing at Ace of Clubs on October 21st as part of CMJ-- our list of must see shows will be out later this week ;)

Now, click on through after the jump to get to know you're new favorite band in their first FREEwilly exclusive interview...

How did you boys meet? When did you first know there was music to be made?

Yos Munro: Aaron and I went to high school together in Pittsburgh and have been playing in bands together since then. We both went to college together in Montreal until he dropped out and started playing with Islands. I graduated last year and we both moved here and started this band.

Two of you guys are connected to one of our favorite Canadian musical ensembles, Islands. How are Steel Phantoms a departure from that sound and is there any cross over influence going on?

Aaron Harris: In Islands, I was the drummer, and while it was a great experience, I didn't have much creative input because the songs were brought to me fully realized, and I would add a drum part. With Steel Phantoms, Yos and I both write songs and a lot of the arranging takes place in rehearsal. The songs are pretty meticulously arranged but it is still definitely pop music.

From Brass Cups to Steel Phantoms... Why? How are the names significant?

YM: Brass Cups was okay but it had no connection to our sound or history; The name Steel Phantoms heralds from mine and Aaron's past--it being derived from the name of a famous roller coaster that used to be in Pittsburgh.

Which musician &/or band are you guys channeling when on stage?

AH: We've only played a handful of shows, but I think our setup is pretty unique; two lead singers with very different vocal qualities, one of whom is the drummer. Our sound has changed so much in a just a few months that it's hard to name specific influences. They are different every day.

Other than the inescapable topic of romance in music, what else are the songs about? Do you all write lyrics, or do you guys have a Steel Phantoms specific routine?

YM: We tend to write about what we know, which is living in New York and trying to build a life and the steps and missteps we encounter along the way. I know that sounds like the end of a Sex and the City episode but people can relate to it? We also write about things like science and telescopes and drugs and Jewish guilt.

As a new band, who are some others you'd be super psyched to play with?

AH: We hope to do more with The Nasties, and we like Your Nature and The Wild Yaks a lot.

    Plans for an EP?

YM: We have a four-song EP that is in the process of being mastered. For now we're focused on writing and performing.

Ticket Giveaway: Grand Archives Tonight AND Tomorrow

grandarchivesss.jpgSeattle's Grand Archives put out their newest, Keep In Mind Frankenstein, last month after grappling with a serious case of writer's block in the studio, namely on standout track "Oslo Novelist". But once the music was laid down, the words just fell into place, and thank goodness. This orchestral and slightly weepy (read: Pacific Northwest) version of a classic southern saloon resonance, is sure to warm your bones.

Jamie T exclusive interview, Kings & Queens out today

    KingsAndQueensCoverArt.jpg
    Kings & Queens out today!

Today UK cutie Jamie T's sophomore album Kings & Queens debuts in the states! His last album Panic Prevention hit #4 on the UK album chart, and promptly put Jamie on the map, drawing comparisons to heroes Bob Dylan and Joe Strummer. The album was nominated that year for the Mercury Music Prize, and at the 2007 NME Awards, the kid with the fuck-all grin was named Best Solo Act – beating Thom Yorke and Jarvis Cocker. Around these parts Jamie made his U.S. TV debut on Last Call With Carson Daly, his song “Salvador” appeared on the soundtrack to HBO’s Entourage, and the ultimate stamp of indie approval the cool folks at KEXP played the shit out of Panic Prevention.

Check out the video for "Chaka Demus" on YouTube. And if you dig it - buy the album on iTunes!

Click through for our exclusive interview with the man himself, rumor has it he might be moving to Williamsburg, so you might wanna learn a thing or two in case you run into him at the Levee.

So you recorded most of Panic Prevention at your parent's house - I imagine your life has changed much since then...how did the recording experience of Kings & Queens differ? And how as a result is Kings & Queens a different record all together than Panic Prevention?

Kings & Queens is a different record simply because it was recorded 4 years after the first. I recorded it in much the same manner as my first one , it was mostly short stints every day then long night sessions in my own studio. The record obviously has some new musical inspirations and ideas too.

Who are some of your influences?

I like watching movies. This has become a big inspiration - movie soundtracks like Nick Cave and Warren Ellis stuff.

How did Bob Dylan "ruin your life for a bit"?

    He didn't. He's a lovely man.

    JamieT_RedWall_AlexSturrock.jpg

When and why did you start getting into making music?

I started getting into playing the drums when I was about 13 because my brother wanted to play them. And back then I hated my brother so I decided I would beat him to it.

What's the most personal song on Kings & Queens and why?

They all have their moments for me.

How would you compare London and Brooklyn?

I dunno. They're both very different places. They’re so different I'm not sure I can answer the question.

How would you describe performing to US audiences vs. UK audiences?

Crowds tend to differ town to town let alone country to country. For example we play a show in New York! good crowd lots of energy - Then go play a show in Portland to the bar staff. That's what I love about touring. You never know what you're gonna get.

How does it feel to have accomplished so much at such a young age? Advice for all the young bands out there?

It's nice to be busy. The only advice I can give is to do what you want. Don't listen to anyone. Don't try and get signed (those guys will come a running like hyenas when they smell blood anyway). Just have fun doing what you're doing.

3rd Ward Opening Restaurant in a Vintage Trailer

    small_shakes_trailer_FW.jpg

The guys behind 3rd Ward have been hard at work buffering up an old silver trailer in the lot adjacent to Roberta's. But what for?

As it turns out, 3rd Ward confirmed to us today that they're getting ready to open up a restaurant "in a souped-up vintage trailer" featuring "gourmet American" fare and a "gorgeous yard," sometime in the near future. We heard it'll be somewhere on Metropolitan.

And, conveniently, since that long-abandoned prostitute/ice cream trailer in the lot across from their new location on Metropolitan Ave. was recently boarded up to make way for a restaurant (said the construction guy), we'll speculate that's where the new digs will be.

    L Train Down For Realz

    ltrain_down.jpg

Twitter alerts us to a very down L train. It is stuck in the tunnel, and has been for an hour, and everyone is now firmly planted in Williamsburg forever. No matter how bad it gets out there people, just remember this day.

When you're old and gray and living somewhere far, far away from the city, your kids will ask, "Grandma, where were you that day when the L train went down 4ever." And hopefully you'll have a wonderful story to tell.

Oh, and hey! Today is the new cream cheese-loving MTA chairman's very first one on the job. He was out greeting riders earlier this morning. Can we blame him? Probably not. But should we, just to give him a warm welcome to "one of the state’s most high-pressure jobs"? Yes! Jay H. Walder, you broke it!

This fall, Pete's Candy Store is hosting a slew of free lectures from Jamie Hook and the Open City Dialogue (OCD). We're especially excited about tonight's event, which features Greenpoint's Rooftop Farms:

Join Annie Novak, one of the masterminds behind Greenpoint's Rooftop Farms, a 6,000 square foot organic farm picture-esquely plopped on top of a warehouse overlooking Midtown Manhattan. Her operation--founded in partnership with Ben Flanner, a neophyte to farming, and Goode Green, a green-roofing specialist--currently produces produce for a host of Brooklyn gourmandizers, including Anella and Marlow and Sons. They even run a farm stand featuring fresh picked produce every Sunday! Come hear how this urban Agronomist tells us the unlikely story of how she did it--and learn how you can too!

The talk will begin at 7:30pm.

Bedford Bikes Taken via NYPD Chainsaw

Cops removed a number of "unused" bikes Thursday night on Bedford avenue by chainsaw, telling the Post they were abandoned bikes of at least three months.

But the guy who shot the video (below) says otherwise:

“They didn’t look like beat up bikes that had locked up there forever — they looked like they were being used,” said Ben Running, a Greenpoint resident and cyclist who filmed police removing the bikes from a street sign near the corner of North Eighth Street. “Bikes shouldn’t be removed without some kind of notice.”

So! If you lost a bike that was parked in that area the other night, try calling the 94th precinct to see if they're still around.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
More Shaun of the Dead than Scream. $18mil.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is good. The directorial debut of Drew Barrymore. With Alia Shawkat, Kristen Wiig, Zoe Bell, Marcia Gay Harden, and Daniel Stern. And roller derby handles like Malice in Wonderland and Eva Destruction.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Similarly demo'd Fame crashed and burned, but this has more names. $44mil.

    WILL IT SUCK?

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Coming out on a crowded weekend, although I have a feeling that Invention of Lying will actually be this film's biggest competition. By the way, turns out this came out in limited release last week and did the best per screen of any film this year, so, sky's the limit. $40mil.

In an alternate universe, everyone tells the truth, until one guy (Ricky Gervais) invents the lie.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is sick. Gervais co-writes and co-directs, and look at his co-stars: Jason Bateman, Rob Lowe, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Christopher Guest, Jeffrey Tambor, Louis C.K., John Hodgman, and Stephen Merchant.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
It's a ridonculously crowded weekend. And next week the more box-office-friendly Vince Vaughan gives audiences a more well-known option. $26mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
If there were ten screenplay nominees, maybe.

    -------------------------------------------------

    A SERIOUS MAN

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
The trials and tribulations of a put-upon man in 1967 Minnesota.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz has this as the Coen Bros'. finest since No Country.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
This doesn't have the cast of No Country. This doesn't have the cast of Blood Simple. You might recognize Richard Kind. Still, the Coen Bros. name alone should put butts in seats. $9mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
A screenplay nod is not out of the question.

    -------------------------------------------------

    MORE THAN A GAME

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
    LeBron James Begins

    WILL IT SUCK?
Credit director Kristopher Belman with wicked sharp foresight. He started filming LeBron and friends when they were in high school. Now all of that footage pays off in what's being hailed as one of the better sports docs in recent memory.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Sports docs rarely make money. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
    Ditto above for Oscar nods.

    -------------------------------------------------

    AFTERSCHOOL

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Some disturbing shit revolving around the violent, drug-related death of two girls at a preppy high school.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Been wowing the crowds at several fests since Cannes '08. Early buzz is good, though it is supposed to be a difficult slog.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Hard to build up momentum for something like this. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Will probably fly under the radar.

    -------------------------------------------------
    October 9
    -------------------------------------------------

    COUPLES RETREAT

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Three couples think they can tag along on the fourth's couples retreat and just enjoy the resort, but the therapy is mandatory - and hilarious!

    WILL IT SUCK?
Written by Jon Favreau (Swingers, good), Vince Vaughn (story credit on The Breakup, okay), and Dana Fox (What Happens in Vegas and The Wedding Date, oh, dear). Directed by Ralphie from A Christmas Story, though, so it's got that going for it. Starring Vaughn, Favreau, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Ken Jeong, Jean Reno, John Michael Higgins, and Faizon Love, but apparently, the one to watch (based on past work) is this guy.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Well, everyone else seems to think it will do well. No other film dares open against it. $121mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
No, but a Best Supporting nod for Vaughn in Swingers would have been totally appropriate.

    -------------------------------------------------

    good-hair.jpg

    GOOD HAIR

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Chris Rock doc that takes a look at black hair and how people don't, you know, like it. Especially if they're black.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is fantastic. Won the Special Jury Prize for docs at Sundance. Second funniest trailer I've seen this year (first comes later in the preview).

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Chris Rock alone gives it more star power than most indies this week. $13mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Sundance win makes it a little more plausible the Academy will take Hair seriously.

    -------------------------------------------------

    AN EDUCATION

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Coming-of-age story with a young woman (Carey Mulligan) going out with an older man (Peter Sarsgaard) in 1960's London.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is great. Won the Audience Award at Sundance. And check out the rest of the cast: Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson, Rosamund Pike, Olivia Williams, and Dominic Cooper. All this and a screenplay from Nick Hornby.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
There are going to be a lot of slices of British history this week. This one's probably more of a crowd-pleaser, tho. $2mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Give enough of a push by Sony Pictures Classics, you could see Mulligan up for Actress, and a Screenplay nod for Hornby.

    -------------------------------------------------

    ST. TRINIAN'S

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Wacky British school for girls vs. mean education minister (Colin Firth).

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is not so good, even with Rupert Everett in drag (he plays the headmistress).

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Did great in Britain, but I don't think it will translate. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
    No.

    -------------------------------------------------

    BRONSON

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
True life story of a British prisoner who developed an alter ego named Charles Bronson while in solitary. See the trailer, though, since a synopsis won't do this justice.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is mixed. Seriously, though, check out the trailer and I think you'll have a good idea if the style is drawing you in or not.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Very crowded, and surprisingly British, weekend. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Seems like the guy playing Bronson would have a shot, but nobody will know about this film.

    -------------------------------------------------

    THE DAMNED UNITED

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
The true story of the guy who took over Leeds United in 1974. It's a soccer thing.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is outstanding and why not? You've got Peter Morgan writing dialogue for Michael Sheen for the third time (The Queen, Frost/Nixon). You've also got Timothy Spall and Colm Meany up in here.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Seriously, does anyone else want to release a British period flick this week, cos I think we could use, like, nine more? $4mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Sheen could have a shot. We'll see how hard Sony Pictures Classics pushes seeing as they have An Education (another British period flick) coming out this same week!

    -------------------------------------------------

    TRUCKER

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Truck driver (Michelle Monaghan) suddenly has to raise her 11 year old son on the road.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is mixed. Nice supporting cast with Joey Lauren Adams, Benjamin Bratt, and Nathan Fillion, who is like indie film helper (see Waitress).

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
On a less crowded weekend, better. $6mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
    I hear Monaghan does a bang-up job.

    -------------------------------------------------

    FREE STYLE

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
    Dirt bike sports flick.

    WILL IT SUCK?
From the director of Harry and the Hendersons. Early buzz is not so hot, but iff they made a movie about bigfoot in a dirt bike race, I would so be there.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
This sort of family friendly fare seems an odd fit for a platform release, although that worked for Kit Kittredge. This is not Kit Kittredge. (Although it does have some dude from High School Musical). $7mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
    No.

    -------------------------------------------------
    October 16
    -------------------------------------------------

    THE STEPFATHER

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Guy's mom starts going out with this dude but things get sketchy when the neighbor sees the dude's picture on America's Most Wanted and winds up dead. Seriously? America's Most Wanted? Is anyone even trying anymore?

    WILL IT SUCK?
Seems about as useless a remake as the version of The Cars' "Drive" that opens the trailer. Or the Prom Night remake the screenwriter penned.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Any real horror fans are will wait for Saw VI next week and any thriller junkies will opt for Law Abiding Citizen. $19mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
We should have a Remake Awards so this can lose it.

    -------------------------------------------------

    wildthingsare-fl-01.jpg

    WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Spike Jonze, meet everyone's favorite bedtime story.

    WILL IT SUCK?
If anyone can pull this off, it's Jonze. As if to pile on the indie cred, Dave Eggers co-wrote the screeplay with him. Author Maurice Sendak has given the adaptation his blessing.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Astro Boy and Cirque du Freak next week, but this has the better branding. $89mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
It's conceivable. Jonze has been to the show before. Screenplay?

    -------------------------------------------------

    LAW ABIDING CITIZEN

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
    Don't fuck with Gerard Butler.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Director F. Gary Gray sure likes him some wronged folks taking on the system (Set It Off, The Negotiator). Writer Kurt Wimmer can be innovative (Equilibrium), or pedestrian (The Recruit), or just plain suck (Ultraviolet). Looks like the combo works here because the early buzz is solid. Plus, Viola Davis as the Mayor of Philadelphia!

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
No real competition. Biggest other film in the room (Wild Things) appeals to a completely different demo. $58mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Unless this film takes the premise to Collateral levels of quality, not so much.

    -------------------------------------------------

    NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Whole bunch of short movies that take place in the Big Apple.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Concept worked for Paris, je t'aime. Should work here, too (same producers). Directors include Yvan Attal, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Kapur, Mira Nair, Natalie Portman, and Brett Ratner (!), but, surprisingly, no Martin Scorsese or Woody Allen. Cast includes Bradley Cooper, Natalie Portman (not in her own segment), Shia LaBeouf, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, James Caan, Ethan Hawke, John Hurt, Olivia Thirlby, Justin Bartha, Chris Cooper, Andy Garcia, Eli Wallach, and many, many, more.

I feel like the cast might be more impressive this time but the directorial bench isn't as deep.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Plenty of people have been looking forward to this one. $16mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
The rules of the Academy weren't built for a film like this.

    -------------------------------------------------

    6cb11_black-dynamite1a.jpg

    BLACK DYNAMITE

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
I'm Gonna Git You Sucka but, like, way funnier.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is great. Trailer is one of the funniest things I've seen all year. Even the ancillary Web site is hilarious. And who can resist a movie where Arsenio Hall plays a character named Tasty Freeze?

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Good buzz going back to Sundance, but still a fairly niche appeal. $9mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Seriously, they have to add a Best Trailer category to encourage this kind of thing.

    -------------------------------------------------

    THE MAID

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
A maid who has served the same family for 23 years feels threatened when a younger model steps in.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is strong. Catalina Saavedra, who plays the maid, is supposed to be fantastic.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Not going to be able to stand up to New York. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
If this were a higher profile (read: English language) film, I could see Saavedra being up for a Best Actress nod. As it is, could be a Best Foreign contender if Chile (or is it Mexico? Co-production, I think) submits it.

    -------------------------------------------------
    October 23
    -------------------------------------------------

    SAW VI

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
So that dude who does what Jigsaw used to do continues to do what Jigsaw used to do.

    WILL IT SUCK?
So, by now, the Saw franchise is it's own little apprenticeship. The current director, Kevin Greutert, a former editor of the series, is taking over for Darren Lynn Bousman who also used to be on the crew. The co-writers have been doing pen duty since Saw IV, so if you've been enjoying them since then, you're all set.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
I criticized Saw V for avoiding the Halloween weekend last year, but now I see the wisdom of that move (see how screwed Zack and Miri was by that timing). This installment, too, avoids that weekend, and has very little in the way of credible competition. However, the series has seen diminishing returns ever since Saw II. $47mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
You know, sometimes it's okay that horror usually gets the shaft at the Oscars.

    -------------------------------------------------

CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Kid joins the cirus. Oh, and becomes a vampire.

    WILL IT SUCK?
I'm going to give director/co-writer Paul Weitz the same In Good Company/About a Boy benefit of the doubt I gave his brother Chris when he directed Golden Compass - and hope for a very different outcome. Doesn't hurt that Brian Helgeland is the other co-writer

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Twilight it ain't, but it is based on a popular teen novel series. $53mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
How awesome would it be if Ken Watanabe lost for The Last Samurai but won for playing Mr. Tall?

    -------------------------------------------------

    AMELIA

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
American version of Amelie. Nah. Bio-pic of the one Amelia you can think of who'd have a bio-pic.

    WILL IT SUCK?
As if Hilary Swank in the lead weren't enough, you've also got Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, and Christopher Eccleston up in here. Mira Nair directs, and if you haven't seen The Namesake yet, dude, seriously, wtf? The writing gives me pause. Yes Ron Bass wrote Rain Man and Joy Luck Club, but he also had a hand in What Dreams May Come, Swing Vote, and Stepmom. On the other hand, co-writer Anna Hamilton Phelan wrote Gorillas in the Mist, Mask, and Girl, Interrupted, so it might all balance out.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Seems like the first true salvo of the awards season, and not another gold chaser in sight. On the other hand, don't know how interested people are in dear Amelia. $42mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
That's the plan. Look for Picture, Screenplay, Director, maybe Supporting Actor, and, if nothing else, another credible threat Actress nod for Swank.

    -------------------------------------------------

    ASTRO BOY

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Kind of like A.I., but cheerier and based on an old Japanese comic series.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Nifty voice cast: Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Charlize Theron, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, and Eugene Levy. Director did Flushed Away, which was decent enough. Writer did Space Jam which, frankly, I liked, but he also did Pure Luck and some other films we probably shouldn't think about too much if we want to have high hopes.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Cirque du Freak and second frame of Wild Things is a bit of a challenge, but this benefits from being CG and having a soft follow-up weekend. $78mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
    Bolt, it probably ain't.

    -------------------------------------------------

    ONG-BAK 2: THE BEGINNING

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Origin story for the guy in part one (and no, his name isn't Ong Bak).

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz sez more kicky-punchy than plotty-talky. Not sure that will keep me away. Original was an underseen martial arts gem.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Remember how I said the original was underseen? $2mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
You know, the Hong Kong film awards have a Best Fight Choreography category. Just saying.

    -------------------------------------------------

    ANTICHRIST

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
    Lars von Trier does horror.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is good if mixed (shocker - a Lars von Trier film is courting controversy). Actually got an anti-award from Cannes for misogyny. Given his track record, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it doesn't matter because I'm too much of a wuss for torture porn.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
The torture porn crowd and the arthouse crowd have little crossover. $7mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
I get the feeling the Academy is over Lars.

    -------------------------------------------------

    MOTHERHOOD

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Trials and tribulations of a West Village mother (Uma Thurman) trying to land a new job and prep her daughter's sixth birthday party.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is mixed. Director (Katherine Dieckmann) has an interesting background. Directed the "Stand" video. No idea if that has any bearing on this film, but that's kind of neat, huh?

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Uma comedies have a hard enough time in wide release. $3mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Don't think this is the one for her (but damn if she shouldn't have gotten some love for Kill Bill).

    -------------------------------------------------

    (UNTITLED)

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Romantic comedy set in the world of contemporary art.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is good. Adam Goldberg stars and Vinnie Jones is up in here outside his genre wheelhouse, which should be interesting.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Quirky comedy comes in a much more potent form with Gentlemen Broncos the following week. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
    Not especially.

    -------------------------------------------------
    October 30
    -------------------------------------------------

MICHAEL JACKSON'S THIS IS IT (October 28)

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Doc revolving around rehearsal for the comeback tour that would have been.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Not if you're an MJ fan. The director of the High School Musicals is on the job, so he should be able capture the spectacle. This, by the way, is the same guy who's directing the Footloose remake.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
As you can imagine, there's not exactly a dearth of interest. $66mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
No, but sadly already wondering if they'll use a Wiz still for the farewell montage since he really wasn't in all that many movies.

    -------------------------------------------------

    GENTLEMEN BRONCOS

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
Fading star author (Jemaine Clement) plagiarizes student (Michael Angarano) to get back into the spotlight.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is not so hot. Interested to see what Napoleon Dynamite co-writer/director Jared Hess can bring to the table after Nacho Libre disappointed. Also, Jemaine!

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Sort of tailor-made for the indie set. $16mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Am I the only one who would enjoy a Flight of the Conchords hosted Oscars? Probably.

    -------------------------------------------------

THE BOONDOCK SAINTS II: ALL SAINTS DAY

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
With a film this cultish, the fact that they made a sequel IS the pitch.

    WILL IT SUCK?
I'll be honest. Never saw The Boondock Saints. No idea what the buzz is about. I'll tell you one thing about writer/director Troy Duffy, though. He sure is focused. This is the only film he's directed since the original came out ten years ago. Cast has got me curious: Julie Benz, Clifton Collins Jr., Judd Nelson, Peter Fonda, and Billy Connolly.

By the way, never seen a greater disparity between a film's Rotten Tomatoes score (17%) and IMDb score (7.9/10) than with the original.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Often these "long-awaited sequels" aren't as long-awaited as you think. $7mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
Part of the appeal of a cult film is that it becomes popular long after it's ineligible for the Academy to ignore it.

    -------------------------------------------------

    HouseOfTheDevil560x330.jpg

    THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL

    WHAT'S THE PITCH?
If a couple offers you a babysitting job in a creepy house in the woods...okay, you shouldn't need me to finish that sentence.

    WILL IT SUCK?
Writer/director Ti West has already established his indie horror cred with The Roost and Trigger Man and his latest is already garnering praise in part for the fact that it's not only set in the 80's, but hearkens back to that type of horror film as well.

    HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
It's a hard world for indie horror. $1mil.

WILL ANYBODY REMEMBER IT AT OSCAR TIME?
It's a hard world for indie horror.

    A Letter To Kari

    hipstergrifterjailletter.jpg

Bryan sent Kari a letter in jail. You can too. And to construct your own Hipster Grifter paper foldable, go here.

    October 01, 2009

    The Daily Footprint 10/01/09

Write to the Hipster Grifter in Jail!

    hipster_grifter_FW.jpg

Our beloved Hipster Grifter wants letters! She wrote a real letter to Bucky at Animal!

Kari Ferrell’s hand-written correspondence reveals what prison life is like for America’s favorite tattooed tiny Asian criminal. She tells us about her sentencing, her cellmates, the media’s portrayal of her and wonders how much she could get for her dirty jail underwear on eBay.

You can probably send her postcards to the following address (via Gawker):

    K. Ferrell Inmate SO#: 295558
    Salt Lake Correctional Facility
    3415 South 900 West
    Salt Lake City, UT 84119

That'd be nice of you. It's getting a tad cold out there to be just a lonely hot dog in a hallway.

Horny Andrew W.K. Will Not Rock Your Place of Worship

    andrewwk_selfpic300.jpg

The "Bloody-nose rocker turned motivational speaker and TV personality" (his words, not mine) Andrew W.K. moved a few tour dates around because of what he's calling a "really intense personal experience" that now prevents him from performing at any religiously-named venue. This wasn't necessarily some kind of born-again religious realization, but rather looks to be more like a wet dream. Andrew, will you explain?

The best I can do to describe my experience, is to say that the world opened up to me, and I received it, as Spirit and Love and of course, a lot of fun and pleasure. It was a sexual feeling, and I just didn't feel right about bringing that onto a holy stage. My choice to move the venues is out of respect for this feeling, for myself, and my body, and for the alters themselves.

Luckily for NYC fans of this television personality, tomorrow's show at Joe's Pub is unaffected. That is unless he decides to receive Joe later tonight.
