CMJ Is Upon Us, Let's Get Dead

cmj09.jpg

Ok, here is a little FREEwilly CMJ guideline. This "list" includes bands we love and know are amazing live, others that are super hyped but we're not sure are any good, shows you cannot miss, free shows, shows to go to just for the free stuff, bands we've never heard of but will take a chance on, and so on and so forth. But we'll leave it up to you to decide which is which (comment thread, I'm talking to you!). Basically here's a rundown of the things we wish we had a time machine for, in no particular order, officially and unofficially CMJ.

Sadly, this music editor is only one girl, and I'll be trying to keep you posted on what's the shit, and what just smells like it, so follow us on twitter if you're in a stalking kind of mood and wanna buy me a drink. Now to leave you with the famous last words of last year's shenanigans, "Figuratively speaking, it's always CMJ in NYC"

Check out our picks after the jump...

Tuesday Oct. 20th

FREE daytime showcase @ Pianos, 12pm-7pm, hosted by The Music Slut and Sneak Attack Media- holler! (Insider Tip: If you wanna see Fanfarlo but are afraid you'll get locked out of the Brooklyn Vegan showcase later in the night- which you will- they play a set at 4pm) Also, FREE margaritas for the first however long...

Monster Island- Ducktails, Best Coast, Highlife, Fluffy Lumbers, with guest appearances including Alex Bleeker from Real Estate. For more things Todd Patrick, click here.

Brooklyn Vegan is doing a thing, duh!

Wednesday Oct. 21st

The xx, Screaming Females, Bear Hands, Team Robespierre, Mumford & Sons and Javelin all playing @ Mercury Lounge- awesome lineup, and probably your best chance of actually seeing The xx this week. Doors at 6:30

Pre-Game it with FREE PIZZA at the Twenty Seven Records Showcase with Dinosaur Feathers and Kordan, before the Vice Party (rsvp details below) at Public Assembly

Thursday Oct. 22nd

This looks pretty rad.

DFA Records, kings of the remix, present James Murphy & Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem (DJ set) and YACHT @ Brooklyn Bowl- 6pm Doors all week!

Friday Oct. 23rd

GreenShoelace.com presents a big unofficial CMJ party at Santos Party House with Theophilus London and Local Natives, need I say more? Oh yeah, after party at Arrow Bar on Ave A-- they're even offering a $5 TICKET SPECIAL for our lovely readers! Just enter "greenshoelace" in the Access Code box here, 3pm-10pm.

Also, um, Cold Cave, Tanlines, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists- FREE with RSVP... hells yes!

Saturday Oct. 24th

$3, 2pm Blue Flowers Showcase @ Bowery Electric with Acrylics, Golden Silvers, and Apache Beat

Roots Studio- Topman/Jelly NYC Showcase with Neon Indian, Cale Parks, and the Almighty Defenders, y'all!

Daytime MusicSnobbery showcase with Sissy Wish & Savoir Adore, it's FREE and at The Living Room.

Bowery Ballroom- Rain Machine (aka Kyp Malone) w/ Sharon Van Etten, Violens, Imaad Wasif, and more...

Myopenbar.com Party above the Auto Parts Store- ALL AGES & an OPEN BAR, Jeff the Brotherhood and Screaming Females will be there too...

Also, all of the late night VICE Parties.

And as for The xx, I'm not recommending the Friday night show at Music Hall based strictly on the fact that I don't want to wait in line-- this will be the press badge horror show of this year's festival, I'm sure. They're playing with the ridiculously awesome School of Seven Bells and Phantogram,

Feel free to add your faves, or call me an asshole, in the comments!
