Williamsburg: Lowest Census Response Rate in All of NYC

FWcensus.jpg

Congratulations, Williamsburg! You are in dead last in census return rates with an impressive 31.3%. Your neighbors to the north in Queens are the highest, with 62.9% returned. Nihilists!

For a little non-context, this rate of 31.3% is equal to the amount of U.S. troops killed from accidents or illness in Iraq (May 2004), White male students likely to have carried a weapon in school in the US, and Hispanics in the state of California in 2001.

Bloomberg said, “For each person who is not counted in the census, the city loses about $3,000 in federal aid every year.’’ So put it this way. We're not getting any new parks, waterfront concerts, McCarren Park updates, trees, bike lanes, bike racks, or anything else the city pays for with federal money until you send in your census.*

*I have no idea how federal monies are used and am not even close to an expert on the subject.

there are actually 3 neighborhoods listed for williamsburg. williamsburg (which has the return rate quoted) but then also "northside-southside", which i'm assuming is williamsburg, and east williamsburg. i assume 'williamsburg' then is south of the bridge, which does imply that hasidic folks are not returning the forms.

"I don't think they count you then? I imagine they are only counting people who received forms, hence it being called a "census return rate." could be wrong tho!"

They count it against population projections reached by statistical analysis, but I could be wrong. It makes sense since it's 1 form per household but a form can be many ppl.

i returned mine. well one of mine.. for some reason i received 3 of these census forms in the mail in that last couple of weeks. oh, and i live in williamsburg so maybe that's the reason for the low percentage.. they sent everyone 3.

Not just Williamsburg, but Borough Park and Crown Heights are also very, very low. Is there a reason that Hasidic Jews don't like filling out forms?

A lot of us live in housing that is not zoned residential. We would show up in projections that they divide by to get the percentage but are less likely to receive a form.
