Free Drinks and Rock Posters
[Via papermag] "Along with graffiti and crime scene police tape, posters are what make the city pretty. They tell us when Danzig is playing next and what date Nelly’s new album drops. They allow us to be creative by drawing Hitler mustaches on Jessica Simpson’s face and changing the “r” in rock to a “c” so the poster reads “Cock Show.” Secret Project Robot is paying tribute to the almighty poster at the Brooklyn Poster Show. Enjoy free drinks [on Friday April 7, 6-9pm] and local music while admiring walls full of rock show posters. It’ll be like staring at the walls of your high school bedroom with tipsy strangers."
Secret Project Robot, 210 Kent Ave., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, (718) 963-2020. 2-8 p.m. Free. Through Sun., Apr. 9.

Tonight: Point Break LIVE! at Galapagos

This is either the best idea ever, or the worst. Maybe both:
Point Break LIVE!, the absurdist stage adaptation of the 1992 Keanu Reeves extreme-sports blockbuster, surfs into Galapagos for an exclusive one-month engagement.
The show, which garnered a “Seattle P-I Best of Seattle 2004” award, as well as rave reviews across the nation, tells the story of former College football star Johnny UtahKeanu Reeves in the filmin pursuit of the bankrobbing, skydiving, bare-hand-fighting adrenaline-junkie-cum-Zenmaster Bodhi Sattva (Patrick Swayzehere played by Gearick Matthies), and features armed robbery, big-wave surfing, car chases, explosions, and no less than two extended skydiving sequences. Best of all, the starring role of Keanu will be selected at random from the audience each night, and will read their entire script off of cue-cards!
At Galapagos (directions)
2.10 8:30pm $10 in advance, $12 at door
Also 2/11, 2/17, 2/18, 2/24, 2/25
You can get tix here.

The Iditarod is the famous long-distance race in which yelping dogs tow a sled across Alaska. This Idiotarod is pretty much the same thing, except that instead of dogs, it's people, instead of sleds, it's shopping carts, and instead of Alaska it's New York City. Tonic hosts a free after-party at 6pm.

Jeff Bechtel Opening

Our good friend, the very talented Jeff Bechtel has an opening at Brooklyn Fire Proof tonight. (Yes, he's also the guy who illustrated The Hipster Handbook and Food Court Druids.) Stop by if you can.
JEFF BECHTEL : DEADALIVE
October 14 – November 13th, 2005
Opening reception: Friday, October 14, 7 - 10 pm
Followed by a performance by COBRETTI at 10 pm
The Monstrum is etymologically "that which reveals,"
"that which warns."
Brooklyn Fire Proof is pleased to present DEADALIVE, Jeff Bechtel’s first solo exhibition in which he has adopted the role of Dr. Frankenstein. Understanding culture as a multitude of fragments, Jeff Bechtel has presented some of these fragments in collections of an unassimilated hybrid, a monster. The monstrous body is a cultural construct and projection: something to be read. It signifies something other than itself, gives reason to the unexplained, signals warning, and reflects our inner fears and desires. Always it comes with a strain of dark comedy. John Ruskin said: “The grotesque is, in almost all cases, composed of two elements, one ludicrous, the other fearful.”
In DEADALIVE, Bechtel introduces zombie glyphs in portrait-like settings of the glamorous affluent. The familiarity and pictorial seduction of this platform provides a pleasing confrontation with the grotesque, creating a perplexing situation of attraction and revulsion. The reaction and its meaning is imparted on the viewer.
Directions after the jump.

To Do Tonight: Art Opening and Tortoise

Tortoise
Jeremy Blake: Sodium Fox - multimedia art opening
Fri 10.7 (6-8pm) at Feigen Contemporary (535 W 20th St)
FREE
[From Flavorpill]
Sodium Fox is Jeremy Blake's latest installment in his delirious oeuvre of acid art films. A collaboration with Nashville poet and Silver Jews frontman David Berman, it updates Eugene Delacroix's Romantic painting Liberty Leading the People, replacing revolutionary symbolism with the post-consumer icon of a Los Angeles stripper from a club called Crazy Girls. Blake's deft patchwork approach to the medium combines animation, found photography, and heady staging, for a romp through fractured, 21st-century American psychology, while his humor cuts close to the bone, re-imagining such prominent forbears as Ed Ruscha and Barry Hannah as a "fantasy gang of poetic ruffians." A salon-style installation of paintings, drawings, and photographs is also on display.
Then check out Tortoise with Daniel Lanois at Irving Plaza

To Do: Agora and Across the Narrows

This weekend is your last chance to see Agora:
Ever wondered what it looked like inside the McCarren Park pool in Williamsburg? Now's your chance to find out. Check out Agora while the weather is still nice:
In celebration of the historic McCarren Park pool site, a 50,000 square foot empty pool in Williamsburg, Noémie Lafrance is creating a site-specific dance performance that invites the community to re-experience a moment in movement of this monumental public space. Agora is a site-specific dance performance inspired by the McCarren pool site and performed by 30 dancers to a multi-channel score with theatrical lighting transforming the 50, 000 square foot pool into a vast staging area. Performed inside the large pool, the overlapping narratives of Agora will produce the illusion of travel through the different layers of visceral urban experiences and explore the phenomenon of agoraphobia as a social and physical reaction to urban architecture.

September 24 March: End the War on Iraq!

A reminder that this Saturday there will be a huge march for peace in DC. It will be followed by a free concert featuring:
Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Le Tigre, Bouncing Souls, Steve Earle, The Coup, The Bellrays, and many others on the Washington Monument grounds.
Strangely, none of the New York bloggers are covering this event thus far. Here's our two cents on political marches... they are generally not very effective since the media and right wingers portray participants as dirty, Lefty, nutjobs. Nevertheless, showing other nations that not everyone in this country approves of the Iraq war and George Bush is extremely important. The Bush administration wants to ignore and censor protest. What's more important than exercising free speech in these creepy times? Don't be a cynic, head on down if you can. Click here for more.

To Do: Negativland Art Opening

Gigantic ArtSpace is proud to present Negativlandland, an exhibition by the "culture jamming" group Negativland.
September 9 - October 22, 2005
OPENING RECEPTION on Friday, September 9, 6-9PM
59 Franklin Street, New York City
From Press Release:
In Negativlandland, you'll see a life size robot of Abraham Lincoln doing his best to educate you, you'll peer into wrecked cars, get your fingers in the dirt, discover the secrets of Howland Island, learn how to make your own noises on the Booper, view many brand new video works, hiccup with rabbits, and much, much more. Also on view will be an unauthorized special edition of a U2 vs. Negativland iPod (version 2G), created by Francis Hwang.
In this noisy exhibition, Negativland suggests a theme park catapulting us into deconstructed attractions of the gallery as a multi-media entertainment destination. Negativland's work poses questions about the nature of perception, media control, ownership, and propaganda. The exhibition will take place in conjunction with the group's 25th anniversary and will feature the collective's recent visual work as well as their trademark sonic work.

Williamsburg Jazz Festival Begins Tonight

From Flavorpill:
Over four nights, the Williamsburg Jazz Festival saturates the 11211 with sophisticated modern jazz by vocalists, orchestras, smaller groups, and a Sunday afterparty with the funky beats of Roboto. This year's highlights include one of today's foremost jazz composers, Dave Douglas, who serves up radiant harmonies over earthy rhythms, with Donny McCaslin on tenor sax, James Genus on bass, Clarence Penn on drums, and Deron Johnson on Fender Rhodes. Another high-profile name, Steve Coleman, subjects hip-hop and urban-funk grooves to intense, but intelligent, avant-garde explorations.

"The 28-year old Sri Lankan-born M.I.A. represents a new type of rootless, nation-less pop performer, one who can effortlessly graft images of violent revolution and Third World poverty to block-rocking party beats. The music on her debut album, Arular, is impossible to define, an irresistible mash-up of British garage, Jamaican toasting, American hip-hop and South Asian bhangra (to name just a few of its elements)"

Free Oneida and Oxford Collapse show at the wonderful East River Park Amphitheatre

WHEN: Saturday July 30th - 2-6pm
PRICE: Free admission
WHERE: East River Park Amphitheatre
just south of the Williamsburg Bridge on the Manhattan side
SUBWAY: F or JMZ to Essex / Delancey
-- DJ Brian Turner
-- Tall Firs
-- Oxford Collapse
-- Oneida
--------------------------------
Oneida: Their latest album,"The Wedding", covers many bases, from ranging full-on rawk to quirky, low-key pop. Jagjaguwar describes their previous album as follows; this seems as good an encapsulation of their sound as anything I can come up with: "Their trademark iterated and psych-tinged noise attack is still fully intact, both nervous and subdued at the same time - like what happens when you give meditative children trained in the ways of yoga an excessive amount of caffeine."

http://www.scjag.com/mp3/jag/treasureplane.mp3
--------------------------------
Oxford Collapse: The Oxford Collapse's newest album, A Good Ground, is a distillation of twenty-plus years' worth of underground rock and roll, evoking early REM, the Meat Puppets, and others. It's catchy as hell, propelled by melodic basslines and accentuated by jangly guitar work, and makes for a damn good summertime listen.

--------------------------------
Tall Firs: Swirling guitars and edgy vocals; if the Oxford Collapse evoke SST Records circa '85, the Tall Firs could have fit on said label two years later. Described on the Tonic website as "Songs of time machines and whiskey."
MP3s:

Extra Action Marching Band: They're a marching band who've won the SF Bay Guardian's Readers' Poll for Best Rock Band, which should tell you a lot. Flag twirlers, a percussion section, you name it...twenty-eight people strong. They have the honor of leading us from the 'theater when the show is through.

Sure, the zany ramblings, bizarre chicken clucks, and unhinged swagger of "Paris Hilton" may have endeared them to the global dance floor crowd, but it's Mutsumi Kanamori and Maurice Fulton's unique blend of hardcore mutant funk that's solidified their street cred from Sheffield to Tokyo. On the married duo's sophomore album, Out of Breach (Manchester's Revenge), production-ace Fulton prods each track along with low-slung thumps, plumbing inky sonic depths for bass lines as vocalist Kanamori freezes the surface with her deadpan delivery and icy shrieks. Beats in Space host Tim Sweeney and Metro Area's Darshan Jesrani get the afternoon started behind the decks and under the sun in P.S.1's famed courtyard.

Siren Festival is hot, crowded, and the sound always sucks. Plus the Voice is run by a bunch of douchebags. This year's line-up sucks too. We recommend this FREE event at Summerstage instead.
Celebrate New Orleans
3pm at Central Park SummerStage (Rumsey Field at 72nd St)
From Flavorpill:
The glory of New Orleans' music is on display today, beginning with a brass band that cranks to 11 — tubist Phil Frazier and headliner Kermit Ruffins co-founded the wily and playful ReBirth Brass Band, so when ReBirth turn the party out with their contemporary sousa-funk, don't be surprised if Ruffins joins in. A favorite son of the Crescent City, he's a trumpet-playing superman, a professional barbeque entertainer whose group swings like there's no tomorrow. The underappreciated Donald Harrison is also on hand — as comfortable in the fantastical garb of a Mardi Gras Indian as he is playing alto with Art Blakey — as are the crowd-riling, high-stepping Lady Buckjumpers. Perfect for everyone who isn't hearing the Siren song
And if you aren't burned out on music and as drunk as we plan on being, check out Ruins at a Todd P event in Bed Sty.

To Do this Weekend: The Blind Boys of Alabama

Sunday July 10
The Blind Boys of Alabama
(with Citizen Cope)
Free at Summer Stage
(Rumsey Field at 72nd St)
From Flavorpill The Blind Boys of Alabama love New York City. It was here, in The Gospel at Colonus, that their stirring Southern harmonies earned them mainstream attention. Since the group's genesis more than 60 years ago — before there was rock, rap, or the Rolling Stones — the Blind Boys have gathered no moss. They stay fresh and relevant through their affiliation with Peter Gabriel's Real World Records and their work with Gabriel, Ben Harper, and sacred steel giant Robert Randolph. The two remaining founding members bring a palpable fire to tunes both secular and sacred on this welcome return. Basehead and Lazy K cohort Clarence Greenwood, aka Citizen Cope, got help from Meshell Ndegeocello and Carlos Santana on the long-delayed The Clarence Greenwood Recordings — today he holds forth with his band, conveniently called Citizen Cope.

Malkmus, Yo La Tengo, Warm Up, and the Yankee Doodle Chicken

Nothing makes us feel more patriotic than the Yankee Doodle Chicken Man. Thanks CAKEHEAD for bringing this to our attention. Lots to do this weekend, including burning a flag to protest our country's Jesusy detour. You know, before it becomes a felony. Here are some other highlights:
Saturday 7-2 (3-9pm)
Warm Up at P.S.1
DJ Harvey w/ Groove Collective and Simon James
22-25 Jackson Ave, LIC
8 bucks includes museum admission
[From Flavorpill]
Not to sound too effusive, but the producers of P.S.1's parties have stepped up their game (again), and your next nine Saturdays are basically a lock. The museum's Greater New York 2005 exhibition — one of the best surveys of local artists in years — is even a compelling reason to occasionally tear yourself from the beer, burgers, and beats in the courtyard, which is tricked out this year with a breathtakingly futuristic, spandex-wrapped canopy/installation piece. The season's lineup is relentless, kicking off with DJ Harvey's leftfield disco, acid jazz big band Groove Collective, and Projections' Simon James dropping all manner of beats and breaks. Wallflowers be warned, Warm Up crowds dance en masse.
July 4
Yo La Tengo, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, and Laura Cantrell
Live and free at Battery Park
[From Flavorpill]
Battery Park, Manhattan's "emerald doorstep," plays host today to classic indie rock and avant country. Twenty years of consistently great records show Yo La Tengo's ever-changing brilliance — from the blissed-out dronescapes of And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out to their genre-defying masterpiece, 1997's I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. Equally essential is Stephen Malkmus, who led '90s groundbreakers Pavement into timeless territory with his rough-around-the-edges genius, and finally hit his solo stride with 2005's pleasantly weird Face the Truth. As for Laura Cantrell, legendary BBC DJ John Peel famously championed the folk aesthete, calling her first album "my favorite record of the last 10 years, and possibly my life.

Brooklyn Hip Hip Festival

Brand Nubian
The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is an all-day outdoor event celebrating Hip Hop music and culture in New York's most beautiful borough. Brought to you by Room Service, Seven Heads, and The Brooklyn Brewery.
When: Saturday, June 18th, 1-7pm
At the Brooklyn Brewery
Featuring Brand Nubian, Little Brother, Rhymefest, and Leela James
Get tickets and info here
Hailing from New Rochelle, NY Brand Nubian formed in 1989. Known for their storytelling style and politically motivated lyrics, the group signed to Elektra and released their breakthrough album, "One For All." Members Lord Jamal, Grand Puba and Sadat X have created many Hip Hop classics including "Slow Down," "Love Me or Leave Me Alone," "One For All," and street favorite "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down."
Little Brother's members MC's Phonte and Big Pooh, along with DJ/Producer 9th Wonder met in 1998 while attending North Carolina Central University. Members of the Durham Hip Hop's Justus League crew, the group released their first album The Listening on ABB Records. They are gearing up for their sophomore album release this summer.
Fresh off his 2005 Grammy win for co-writing the rap song of the year "Jesus Walks" with Kanye West, Chicago native, Rhymefest is set to release his highly- anticipated debut album Blue Collar, this summer on celebrity DJ Mark Ronson's Allido Records/J Records. The sharp-witted MC is expected to have fellow Chi-town representatives, Kanye, Twista, Common and Carl Thomas as well as Q-Tip and the late Dirt McGirt (aka ODB) featured on his album. This will be his first major performance in NYC and Brooklyn in particular.
One listen to Leela James's music and it's evident that James is a pupil and conduit of classic soul. Alma Geddy-Romero, went on to say, "We're really excited to add Leela to the line up as an extension of the marketing campaign we are doing for her project. My DJs love her music, and I'm positive the festival attendees will as well."

-- A Sixpoint Sweet Action Beer!
-- Dick Readings by Madame Micole ($5 a head)
-- Lots of raffle prizes!
Plus the people who run and operate Sweet Action are super cool. The upcoming mag features backpaker Beans nude.
Then on Sunday at 6pm
see the film Half-Cocked (1995) - because we love the Make-Up
Ocularis at Galapagos Art Space (70 N 6th St, Wburg)
6 bucks
from flavorpill Half-Cocked is best known for its soundtrack, featuring '90s lo-fi band the Grifters and riot grrrl math rockers Ruby Falls. The film chronicles the naissance of Truckstop, a band born of Gen-X boredom and timeless rock star aspirations. After jacking a van laden with another band's equipment, a group of friends bluff their way into playing a local club. Because the band has no material, and none of its members play instruments, their musical signature quickly becomes volume and distortion. Don't miss this rare chance to see Ian Svenonious (Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Weird War, et al) and Tara Jane O'Neil lead the cast down the glorious road of rock 'n roll destitution.

Bookmark Now: NYC Reading & Release Party

Tuesday, June 7 at 7:00pm
at Galapagos Artspace (70 North 6th Street in Williamsburg)
No cover. Free book give-aways. And yours truly (Robert Lanham) will be reading.
On Tuesday, June 7, editor Kevin Smokler and New York-based contributors to Bookmark Now will read from their contributions to the book, which features young writers on the state of the artand the art of the hustlein the age of information overload.
Bookmark Now contains 25 original essays written by authors who came of age professionally in the last decade. Raised by television, video games, and the internet, they still decided to become writers and readers, producers and consumers of literature at the most media-saturated time in history, a time when books have more competition from flashier distractions than ever before. How? Why? What does this say about the place of books in our hypermedia world? BOOKMARK NOW attempts to answer these questions. As book lovers, we are familiar with the gloom and doom attitude of these "Unreaderly Times." But, there are still smart people everywhere who love books and are excited for the possibilities the future will bring for connecting books and readers. BOOKMARK NOW argues and celebrates that that future is already here.
Smokler will introduce readings by Stephanie Elizondo Griest, Robert Lanham, Benjamin Nugent, and Elizabeth Spiers of Gawker/Media Bistro fame. Sponsored by FreeWilliamsburg.com, the event also features audience giveaways of Bookmark Now and Lanham's Food Court Druids, Cherohonkees, and Other Creatures Unique to the Republic, both of which will be raffled off in-between readers.

To do this weekend: The Billyburg Film Festival
Remember, there is no L service all weekend starting at midnight tonight. Rat bastards.
Friday and Saturday June 4 and 5
The Billyburg Film Festival
at Northsix in Williamsburg
66 North 6th Street
10 bucks - films start at 9pm
From Flavorpill
The folks at Rabbit in a Turtle Shell are back with a second Billyburg Short Film Festival, expanded to two nights of abbreviated cinema. The first program, Inspiration, highlights ten works that embody the organization's definition of great short film, including pieces by Raising Victor Vargas director Peter Sollett, Interpol Short Film contest winner Greg Brunkalla, and the irreverent comic troupe Stella. The aptly named second night, Competition, is a juried screening of seven films chosen from over 130 submissions. (IB)
Note: Each night begins with Elijah B. Torn's live laptop soundtrack and adult beverages from sponsors Brooklyn Lager and PBR. Local bands Professor Murder and Innocent Animals follow each night's screenings, respectively.

It's Memorial Day Weekend....

The Hold Steady free at Soundfix Records
TO DO FRIDAY 5-27
Get drunk by 7pm because Rilo Kiley is sold-out anyway.
Go home and download MP3's of this free Ryan Adams show
TO DO SATURDAY 5-28
Check out The Hold Steady at Soundfix Records, 3:00 PM
It's FREE
Bedford Avenue (at North 11th Street)
Then check out The Weird Weeds w/ Castanets and Marissa Nadler at
Glass House Gallery, 38 S 1st St, W-burg. (only 5 bucks)
From Flavorpill The Weird Weeds, the Castanets, and Marissa Nadler are united by the tendency to haunt and hypnotize. While the Austin-based Weird Weeds create uncanny congruity from eerie guitar riffs, electrifying cymbals, door creaks, and full-pitched screams, the Castanets, birthed from San Diego's underground scene, mesmerize with mellower avant folk-rock. Marissa Nadler's hypnotic soprano, fortified by guitar, ukelele, or five-string banjo, croons with melancholy and soul. Within the Glass House Gallery's surreal setting (where freedom of artistic expression oozes like the freshly thrown acrylics on the walls), unfetter those last shackles of reality and succumb to this existential showcase.
TO DO SUNDAY 5-29
See the film "Smiles of a Summer Night" at the very underated Museum of the Moving Image at 6:30pm (only $10 and include admission). Get directions here.
From Time Out Ingmar Bergman's sunniest film -- it's very nearly a comedy, in fact -- inspired both Sondheim's A Little Night Music and Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy. Those who find his usual gloom 'n' doom wearisome are in for a very pleasant surprise.
TO DO MEMORIAL DAY
If the weather is nice on Memorial Day:
Green-Wood Cemetery Celebrates Memorial Day with Free Annual Concert
[From Gotham Gazette] On Monday, May 30 at 2:00 p.m., The Green-Wood Historic Fund will celebrate its 7th Annual Memorial Day Concert as the extraordinary 54-piece Goldman Memorial Band pays tribute to Green-Wood "residents" Leonard Bernstein, Louis Gottschalk and Fred Ebb in a musical salute. The band will also debut a special medley to legendary Broadway lyricist Fred Ebb. The free concert takes place at the landmark Victorian Archway of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Guests are welcome to bring picnic lunches and folding chairs. Hot dogs, snacks and refreshments will be sold, as well as books about the cemetery and its history. All proceeds will benefit the Historic Fund, which preserves and restores the historic monuments and tombstones.
Green-Wood Cemetery is located at 25th Street at 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. The concert will be at the Victorian Archway.

To do this weekend: Summer in LongIsCity and Tommy's Tavern

From Flavorpill:
Though MoMA's moved the masterpieces back to Manhattan, Long Island City is still teeming with culture. Commence an art-filled weekend by touring the furtive Fisher Landau Center, an icon-heavy painting and sculpture collection. Then, drop into the nearby Museum of the Moving Image, where Porgy and Bess lights the screen and Digital Play recreates a video-game arcade. Later, listen to live music in the peaceful Noguchi Museum garden or let loose with Skeletons & the Girl-Faced Boys in P.S.1's courtyard. Hit the trail again on Sun 5.15 for two exciting sculpture shows: Make It Now: New Sculpture in New York at the stylish Sculpture Center and the competing Sport at the down-to-earth Socrates Sculpture Park. (YP)
Also, a great show at Tommy's Tavern:
Leaders of the Free World, The Redcoats are Coming, Poorboy Johnson & the Goddamn Rattlesnake, Landrew, and Compassion in Action

To do this weekend

Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival)
Sat and Sun at the Beautiful Brooklyn Botanical Garden
click here for schedule and info
Saturday will be rainy most likely, but Sunday should be nice
From Flavorpill
Despite Gwen Stefani's Harajuku girls, the obsession with Lost in Translation, and the widespread acceptance of Murakami's pop art, we should acknowledge that Japan is about more than modern pop culture trends. For a taste of old traditions, there's the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. And no, you don't have to go to DC to see them — it's just a short subway ride to Brooklyn. The two-day festival features a full schedule of events, including Samurai sword fighting, Taiko drumming, classical concerts, and woodblock printing classes.

And, if you can get a ticket, Death From Above 1979 are playing the Bowery Ballroom Sat, Apr 30 -- doors open at 8:30pm. Tickets are $15
From Village Voice
They're a duo from Canada, but we won't pass judgment. Nor will we chastise them for being on Vice Records and being the sort of quasi-/neo-metalheads that just might wear girls' jeans and trucker hats. Why? Because they totally rock: dancey disco beats, robotic turbo bass, and sticky-sweet classic-rock vocals that have you singin' along about young love and blood on yer hands all while headbangin' and doing a li'l Ashlee Simpson jig. With Uncut and Controller.Controller.

Christopher Guest, Parker Posey and Spinal Tappers at MoMA

Saturday, April 9 - $10
MoMA (11 W 53rd St, 212.708.9400)
From Flavorpill Not since the Hal Ashby and Robert Altman films of the '70s has improvisation been used well for dramatic purpose. Instead, as Curb Your Enthusiasm and the brilliant films of Christopher Guest have made clear, improvisation is now a comic medium, and a successful one at that. Guest's This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind top any list of improv's greatest moments. This latest incarnation of MoMA's Great Collaborations series unites stars from those films: Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban. New Exhibition at PS1: Greater New York 2005

We were going to post this last week as a "to do" but knew the opening weekend crowd would be too annoying. Check it this weekend:
P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center Greater New York 2005 MARCH 13 - SEPTEMBER 26, 2005 click for directions/info
Greater New York 2005, jointly organized by P.S.1 and The Museum of Modern Art, will go on view at P.S.1 on March 13,2005 showcasing more than 160 artists from the New York area. This exhibition builds from the spirit of its first incarnation, Greater New York, which opened at P.S.1 in 2000, shortly after the two institutions became affiliated.
Greater New York 2005 presents artists who have emerged since 2000. Their work explores both this specific time period, during which New York City has changed dramatically; shows vitality, energy, and exciting promise; and anticipates new artistic directions. The exhibition includes artists from New York's five boroughs, as well as nearby towns in New Jersey.

After Hours in Williamsburg

In celebration of the Armory Show in Manhattan, most Williamsburg galleries will be open until 11pm on Saturday, March 12:
From Flavorpill
No, not that kind of after-hours. Inspired by the 1,000-watt Armory Show across the river in Manhattan, tonight's Brooklyn soiree is really a trans-gallery celebration of artists, filtered through the unique sensibility that is Williamsburg. Think of it as a lively promenade through the hip precincts of a robust, artistic community. With over two dozen galleries expected to contribute diverse performances and special events - including a live band at Pierogi, the always idiosyncratic offerings of the Dollhaus, and an Open Ground bash featuring DJ Damone and a talented roster of artists from Berlin - After-Hours provides an eclectic stroll through an epicenter of art that's no longer merely emerging. (DI)
Note: Spike Hill Bar and Grill (184 Bedford Ave, 718.218.9737) houses an information center. Also, various afterparties abound - consult your favorite gallery for information.

From Reuters:
Nudists dine in New York style
By Claudia Parsons
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The diners arrived at a nice Manhattan restaurant on a cold February night and stripped off coats, hats, gloves and scarves. They didn't stop there.
Skirts, shirts, pants, underwear and stockings all ended up stashed in plastic bags by the bar as the patrons got naked for the monthly "Clothing Optional Dinner."
"It's exciting to be in a restaurant nude," said George Keyes, 65, a retired junior high school English teacher.
Nude yes, but not unadorned.
Keyes, a lifelong nudist, wore a necklace, earrings and a black leather "genital bracelet" with red studs. And white sneakers.
The dinner was started by a group of New York nudists who wanted something a bit more elegant than the wilderness getaways and beach resorts they generally frequent.
"When you go away on holiday it's more you're roughing it in the woods, whereas this is a really nice restaurant," said Keyes, a member of gay nudist group Males Au Naturel, or MAN.
John Ordover set up the dining club about a year ago, recruiting members through word of mouth and the Internet.
"Next month is our Easter bonnet event, where everybody has to come wearing an Easter bonnet," said Ordover, a heavyset man with a jovial smile and glasses.
SOMETHING TO SIT ON ...
Around 30 people arrived for the buffet dinner -- organizers specified no hot soup on the menu -- most of them middle-aged, several married couples, some singles, the youngest perhaps in their 30s.
"They're a good class of people, they're no different to you or I," said John Bussi, owner of the midtown restaurant. "They're not hurting anybody, it's not a wild Roman orgy."
Health regulations mean staff must remain clothed even if they wanted to join in. And diners must bring something to sit on -- a towel or, for discerning women, an elegant silk scarf.
The restaurant's manager covered the windows to maintain privacy at the strictly private party. Extra heaters kept the temperature at a comfortable level for nudity.
Ordover's wife, Carol, said they first went on a naturist holiday five years ago and she found the experience empowering. But, she explained, it's "the least sexual thing you can possibly imagine."
"Men in nudist resorts are striking a bargain. They get to see as many naked women as they like as long as they are polite and look them straight in the eye," she said.
Sherry Stafford, a petite and elegant 51-year-old with blond hair and high heels, brought brochures and videos advertising her travel business, Internaturally Travel.
One of the flyers was for a resort called "Hedonism II" whose slogan is "Be wicked for a week." But she said nudists should not be confused with swingers.
"Wearing clothes and going to church does not protect you from moral evil," Stafford said, lamenting what she saw as a tendency to demonize people just because they like to be naked.
Sandy, a slim woman in her 40s, said she never felt self-conscious about her body and was comfortable dining in the nude. But she did admit to being a bit more nervous before a recent naked yoga class attended by around 25 people.
"Everyone was a little concerned there would be people looking around but the good thing is nobody really was," she said, standing at the restaurant's bar before dinner.
"If you try to maintain a yoga position you're going to fall if you start looking around -- and that's more embarrassing than anything else."

Boozy
Robert Moses, Freemasons, and Fornicating Rabbits
This looks right up our alley!

Boozy: The Life, Death, and Subsequent Vilification of Le Corbusier and, More Importantly, Robert Moses ($15)
The Ohio Theatre
66 Wooster St, New York, New York
February 13-March 5
All Performances 8pm
Amidst a blaze of streaming media, ridiculous choreography, and dozens of live fornicating rabbits, famed French architect Le Corbusier inspires builder Robert Moses in his desperate battle to recreate New York," the Off-Broadway company announced. "Boozy: The Life, Death, and Subsequent Vilification of Le Corbusier and, More Importantly, Robert Moses tracks the life of Robert Moses, from idealistic youth to unstoppable power broker, able to turn parched land into glorious bridges, highways, and public housing with a mere flick of the wrist. With guest appearances by Benito Mussolini, FDR, and the ghost of Baron von Haussmann, Moses learns from the greats until true power is finally his. Freemasons dance, FDR levitates, and Daniel Libeskind silently weeps. None shall be spared.

Grizzly Bear at Glass House Gallery

Don't miss the beautiful folk psychedelia of Grizzly Bear, playing in Williamsburg this Sunday. Local label Kanine Records strikes gold again with this great up-and-coming band.
Check out their site to listen to GB's music.
From their site:
"During a long fifteen-month hibernation in his cozy Greenpoint, Brooklyn bedroom, Droste laid the groundwork for Grizzly Bear's first album. Upon completion of this "demo," Droste enlisted the help of a real bear, Christopher Bear, who breathed new life and sounds to the work. Hailing from Chicago, Bear has worked in various musical projects ranging from laptop shenanigans to free jazz. He has provided a vast technical knowledge, a certain sonic polishing, as well as additional instruments and vocals to the initially primitive recordings.
The result, Grizzly Bear's debut album titled "Horn of Plenty." is a nostalgic amalgamation of found sounds and layered vocals bound to thrill followers of Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens and Nick Drake."

Christian Marclay: Shake Rattle and Roll (fluxmix)
Sat 1.8 (10am-7pm) FREE
Paula Cooper Gallery (534 W 21st St)
"One of the founders of turntablism, Christian Marclay is an avant-garde DJ who also creates in other artistic media. In the video installation, Shake Rattle and Roll (fluxmix), he projects a special brew of Fluxus-inspired montage, stemming from his time as an artist-in-residence at the Walker Art Center, on several screens. Dredging through archival materials and artifacts from a motley group of Fluxus artists, Marclay plays with the musical possibilities of wooden toys, puzzles, postcards, and other ephemera by such luminaries as Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, and Joseph Beuys. Where Fluxus confounded audiences by stretching disciplinary boundaries, Marclay, the sonic archaeologist, succeeds by orchestrating their complexity."

Weekend Happenings:

To Do:
It's A Wonderful Next Life: A Drag City Christmas party
Featuring Joanna Newsom (pictured), smog, and Weird War
Bowery Ballroom, Saturday Dec. 18, $15
Rising folkie Joanna Newsom's child-like vocals will either drive you nuts or inspire you, but seeing Weird War's Ian Svenonius (formerly of the Make-Up and Nation of Ulysses) strut his stuff is always worth the trip.
dress code: A sweater with a knit cap or scarf please
-------------------------------------------------
To Avoid (God, this sounds annoying):
2004 Unsilent Night (the Christmas Piece)
From the event's site:
"Every year since 1992 I've presented Unsilent Night, an outdoor ambient music piece for an INFINITE number of boom box tape players. It's like a Christmas carolling party except that we don't sing, but rather carry boom boxes, each playing a separate tape which is part of the piece. In effect, we become a city block long stereo system!
In 2004 the piece will happen on Saturday December 18th. We will meet at the Arch in Washington Square at 6:45 pm, begin at 7 pm and proceed eastward to Tompkins Square Park, where the piece will end around 8 o'clock.
It would be really cool if you could join us and bring a boom box. The more tapes we run, the bigger and more amazing the sound will be. This past Christmas we had 100 boomboxes and over 500 people total, it was really spectacular... If you'd like to do it, please email me at boombox@mindspring.com so I will know how many tapes to make. If you'd like to do it but don't have a boombox, I have several dozen and you can grab one...and if you want to come and just listen, that's cool, too. Help us make a BIG (and joyful) noise."

Sagan vs. the Dead Texan

Dinner and art in a cool setting
Friday December 10 (8 & 10pm)
at Monkey Town (222 Leonard St, Williamsburg, 718.384.1369)
From Flavorpill:
"Monkey Town, an immersive environment in which guests are surrounded by four screens, is the perfect venue in which to get lost in Sagan's Unseen Forces. This audiovisual project begins with a mesmerizing portrayal (incorporating flashlights) of the big bang theory, set to an otherworldly score that combines synths and glitchy trip-hop, followed by a trio of black-and-white shorts that slyly put late, great cosmic thinkers in compromising fictional situations. With a name derived from astronomy wonder Carl Sagan, the multimedia collective -- comprised of Blevin Blectum, J Lesser, Jon Leidecker, and Ryan Junell -- does its namesake proud. Also playing tonight are a collection of music videos from the Dead Texan, a collaboration between Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid) and video artist Christina Vantzos."
Tonight's Menu:
Shaved Fennel & Pomegranate Salad ($6)
w/ mint & habanero vinaigrette
Baccala Squash Chowder ($8)
Thyme Pesto Polenta ($10)
w/ smoked tofu & herbs
Braised Beef Short Ribs ($14)
w/ spiced oatmeal cake & Chinese long beans

Dress up like Santa, get drunk, make a fool of yourself....

That's right.... Santacon will be happening again this year.
Saturday Dec. 11th
Time and place to be annouced here
2004 is the 10th Anniversary of Santacon!
Each December for the last 10 years Cacophonous Santas have been taking to streets in major metropolitan areas and generating a bit of naughty Noël mayhem as part of the annual Santacon events. It all started back in 1994 when several dozen Cheap Suit Santas paid a visit to downtown San Francisco for a night of Kringle Kaos. Things have now reached Critical Xmas and these infamous Santacons are now held in over a dozen cities each year.
Here is the 2004 411 from Santa...the day is Saturday December 11th. Expect to start in the morning around 10AM. A hotline number will also be available if you want to try to catch up with the Santa's, mid rampage. Santa highly recommends spending the whole day until midnight, when you will be delirious and exhausted and you'll be shouting at strangers or mumbling to yourself and the whole thing gets blurry and you wake up the next day in a gutter in the South Bronx. The kick off is at 10am for an extra special treat. The place will be revealed in due time.
This venerable tradition is almost a decade old, and makes flash mobs look like sitting at home watching C-SPAN
Plan ahead before all the suits are snatched up from the Goodwill.

The South Asian International Film Festival

Wed 12.1 - Sun 12.5
From Flavorpill:
"Day one of this inaugural film fest kicks off with a gala showing of Bride and Prejudice from director Gurinder "Bend It Like Beckham" Chadha. Screening 14 films from pan-South Asian directors spanning India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal, as well as Diaspora productions from the US, UK, and Iran, Colors in Fusion balances the saccharine high of big-budget Bollywood beats with sobering, sociopolitical dramas (Black Friday, The Clay Birds) and a concurrent documentary festival, Films for Freedom, at the Rubin Museum of Art. More than just great reels, SAIFF also wants to put the "festive" back in festival with five nights of after parties: ready yourself for booty-shaking bhangra."

The Bird Blobs: live in NYC

The Bird Blobs are an aggressive band similar to the Australian bands of the late 1970s like The Scientists and Birthday Party. They don't sing so much as scream the vocals. It's blues and rock and roll and it's exciting. Their weird time signature and angular guitars recall Captain Beefhart. They often fight with audience members. Make sure you are not in the front rows or you might get hurt. People have described The Bird Blobs saying: "This music is enough to revive your dead grandma." Check them out.

MoFucking MoMA

If you don't mind huge enormous mind-boggling crowds, check out the MoMa this weekend as they reopen their doors.
From Flavorpill:
"A treasure chest of modernism, MoMA reopens its Manhattan home after undergoing the most extensive rebuilding and renovation project in its 75-year history. Architect Yoshio Taniguchi's sleek design, which is highlighted in one of the opening exhibits, nearly doubles the capacity of the former building (featured here in the film series Made at MoMA, celebrating the institution's cultural presence). Two other shows also focus on the museum's expansion: Mark Dion displays artifacts excavated from the sculpture garden and demolished adjacent buildings, while Michael Wesely exhibits long photographic exposures of the project's evolution. The icing on the cake is the reinstallation of the permanent collection, a magnificent feat in and of itself."
