Do You

If you want to spend your Saturday night dancing, we strongly suggest you get yourself down to the gallery bar at Le Poisson Rouge for I Love Vinyl. Expect to hear anything from hip hop to house, dancehall to disco, soul to salsa, and everything in between. The only music policy is that its pressed on wax and it’s the jam.

If you click here, you can get in for free before 11pm.

Smells Like Neat Spirit

Apparently smelling like you’ve been on a three-day bender is now socially acceptable, sophisticated even. Portland General Store have released this Whisky Eau De Toilette, claiming its ‘powerfully masculine’ aroma is like ‘old oaken casks, deep amber and rich spice’. Furthermore, there’s a Tobacco Wet Shave Soap to complete your debauchery-steez beauty regime. Both available at Hickorees.

'Birth of the Sun' & 'Downtown 81' screening tonight

Kings County Cinema Society are screening a double-header of New York Art documentaries tonight at Launchpad, Brooklyn.

Birth of the Sun is the story of Grady Alexis, a Haitian artist who came to NYC via Miami. Alexis lived and worked on the streets, where he met his death, dying in 1991 at the hands of an off-duty cop in a streetfight. He was 26 years old. Director Thomas W. Campbell will be introducing the film.

Basquait doc, Downtown 81(aka New York Beat Movie) will screen directly after. The event is free, BYOB, popcorn supplied. 8pm.

Toro Y Moi "Low Shoulder"

When you shut your eyes and listen, this tune by FREEwilliamsburg favorite Toro y Moi is all skippy, bouncy, and happy squelchy-ness. When you open them it’s all roofies, stabbing and satanic rituals. An interesting video by Elisha Smith-Leverock and Chris Murdoch.

The Rap Map

A useful tool for road-tripping hip hop nerds, the Rap Map pin-points such notable locations as the George Westinghouse Institute of Technology, where Biggie, Jay Z and Busta all went to school in the 80s and honed their skills in the hallways. You can also locate spots name-checked in songs, such as the charming Greenleaf Boulevard where ‘bodies be found..with their fucking heads cut off’ -from ‘Let Me Ride’ by Dr. Dre, or Lil Wayne’s condo in Miami (or Rikers Island, the jail Lil Wayne is serving time for weapons charges).

Those less interested in hip hop history and more in meeting a nice lady should instead refer to this helpful map of places.

Jaydiohead Mos Def Doublechecks Your Head

Following in the footsteps of Wait What‘s XX/notorious B.I.G. mash-up album, Max Tannone gets busy mixing up and merging some of music’s big-hitters. His Jaydiohead album is available for download here, as well as a collision of Beastie Boys vs Beastie Boys and a Mos Def reggae face-off. Grab these now before the labels get on the blower to their legal department.
