NY MAG SAYS: Galapagos bills itself as an art, music, dance, theater and performance space, gallery and, finally, bar. It sounds ambitious, and it is. The space is so huge that, whether it's from the empty stage, high tables with barstools, the bar itself or the oversized back room, you'll have plenty of room from which to scan the crowd that just lumbered off the L train. There'd be even more square footage if the entire front end weren't occupied by a dark, rectangular reflecting pool. Galapagos may be the only public place in town where (while imbibing) you can hear a reading of Shakespeare's Tempest, shimmy to live Cuban music and see trapeze artists all in the same month

From City Search
"One must walk a metal grating over a reflecting pool, moodily lit with floating and wall candles, just to get inside. Its exposed beams and grids running along the top of the warmly lit interior subtly evoke the environment's found, industrial beauty in a spontaneous way. Beyond the moat-like entrance, the bar maintains a welcoming vibe. Galapagos has successfully established itself as a Williamsburg cultural center, hosting plays, bands, DJs and cabaret acts in addition to its now-famous Sunday night movie series, Ocularis. The space also features a gallery of paintings and installations by neighborhood artists."
From Village Voice
"Galapagos opened its doors when Williamsburg was still scary - pitbull and gun scary, not paintbrush-wielding hipster scary. Years of development later, Galapagos maintains it's aura of the cool big brother with live bands, DJs and a sizzling night of Burlesque. Involve the wrong substances and staring into the long, black pool of water at the bar's entrance can rival staring into the Total Perspective Vortex. "

Awe Inspiring. From the moment you walk in to the moment you take your first drink you are a bit stunned at how a place that is so simple in design can be so complex at the same time. With its stage in the front and another dance room in the back, Galapagos brings back the notion " A place for everyone". From their bands on the weekends, to their art shows, down to Burlesque nights on MOndays, this place serves to be the cultural part of Williamsburg. It has a diverse crowd and friendly wait staff. I cant stop going to this place.

Finally an exciting event happening in NY and leave it to galapagos to screw it up. What a disappointment. The site posted a show with Philip Glass which was really exciting. When I arrived at Galapagos, the scary man guarding the back room apparently lost his voice by yelling to everyone to go home. He told me the show was sold out-but the tickets were never for sale. They advertise a hot name like Glass and close it off to friends and families and their VIP's and hope that the rest of us will show up and at least stay for a drink. This place is typical of NYC lately...

only go here if you're already piss drunk....I went sober once and all that infiltrated the air was whiney chicks at an open mic night....so gay!
