NY Mag Review: Alongside the Williamsburg Bridge, Bembe is a world apart from its concrete, industrial environs. Inside, the bi-level lounge feels more like Miami or a steamy, fun-loving Latin American hotspot, with a tropical drinks menu—mojitos, rum punch, a tasty vodka concoction marinated in and served from an actual watermelon—and an airy, island-like décor of exposed brick and blonde wood. (The slightly exotic, accented bartenders, both male and female, lend another degree of authenticity.) But more than anything else, it's the sexy, ethnically-diverse crowd dancing (some expertly, some not) to vibrant Latin music, spun by a DJ but sometimes accompanied by live drummers, that really makes you feel like you're on vacation. Be warned: These booty shakers move with an enthusiasm and determination—sans attitude—that's contagious.

From Village Voice:
"A refreshing break from the lily-white Williamsburg hipster scene, this cozy brick-walled lounge is a relaxing place to enjoy sweet island-flavored drinks early in the evening. But Bembe heats up as the night goes on, with DJs spinning multicultural beats, often accompanied by hand percussionists as the sexiest people you'll ever see rub up against each other."

From Paper
"Even with new multimillion-dollar lofts, the southwestern edge of Williamsburg is still pretty far from paradise. This Afro-Cuban lounge has few windows, which allows little of the external world to disrupt the Brazilian fantasy inside. Everything here is authentic, from the bamboo tables and wood-planked floor to fresh cocktails. You can snag a spot on the hammocks — though trying to mount them can prove dangerous after a few glasses of rum punch. Official closing time is 4 a.m., but crowds have been known to keep the party going all night."
From City Search:
"Island soul infuses this earthy spot for live drumming and drinks. This two-level South Williamsburg lounge has the rustic air of an out-of-the-way Caribbean dance hall. Talented nightly DJs, often joined by live percussionists, spin Brazilian, Afro-Latin funk, rock and reggae tracks that saturate both floors through an excellent sound system. The main room is furnished with a long, cushioned banquette, woven-straw chairs and a festive hammock; exposed brick and richly crafted wood walls hold Cuban photos as well as nooks for candles, incense and instruments. Coasting on vibrant tunes, a lively, sociable crowd mingles at the bar and spills into the large, poured-concrete rec room below. Guava margaritas, potent rum punch and dessert-like capetas (with fresh coconut milk, sweet condensed cream or honey, fresh coconut meat, coconut rum and fragrant guarana powder) keep the buzz going strong."

To Silvia Matter's post..

...some of the best percussionist from brasil, cuba, puerto rico... to mention a few jam out at bembe.. also neighborhood legends Dub Trio crew jam there on the regular. you obviously have no idea what good vibes are. there is a reason why hipsters dont like it and you were probably turned away for being stale.. you wont get in and you wont relate ------ for all the rest of the lovely multi cultural yes i can bring a lady friend and dont want to stand around looking at a bunch of guys crew.. come out and be around family - this is the best lounge in all of BKLYN. i travel all over as a DJ and i hear this spot praised in LA London Brasil Jamaica Finland Japan.. they got to be doing somethin right....the best thing is the owners the staff the door guys all care that everyone is safe and respected and feelin good. they go out of there way to set it off. Dj;s Sabo Medina Leche MokE Gravy Dubz to name a few rock out there weekly. for the old school heads who miss what NYC used to be come out one night and see for yourself.. you will know why this spot is the best around.

I went to Bembe on Saturday and the Music was AMAZING!!!! I will most Def go back and party. live scene and cool nice people.
Cheers

so we(me and my friend Shon) where comming over from flatbush specially for this club.when we arrived the doorman says ;
NO WOMAN NO ENTRANCE
clubs with that kind of pollecy's sucking big time!

Just one of my favorite places in NYC to have a drink. The music is very good, the crowd is excellent but the location is perfect. I really like that little bar.

Haven for spoiled multi cultural douches.. go here and meet some "righteous" "spontaneous" fags who traded their green day cds in for bongos...also the girls that buy into that sort of thing (think past their prime)

Hey guess what? the hottest reggae singer Ava leigh who’s worked with the famous Sly n Robbie, Nick Manasseh, and future cut has free music you can download at www.avaleigh.co.uk ?check it out.

Bembe is one of my favorite spots. Its where my girlfriends and I shake our booties to the beat of the Samba or become posesed at the sound of the Palos. Its also a great place to go to on a date on a weekday. The RumPunch is delicioso and the staff is very pleasent. The diversity is great and everyone just seems to be getting along. I must say it does get crowded, and the smoking downsairs is a little incovenient. But hey, one can't have it all. Great prices, no cover or dress code, exotic music, tasty drinks, lovely decor..... Bembe here I come!!

Bembe is an ok place, it does not make my top 20 list, however, it does have its perks. The latin percussion, the hot atmosphere almost gives you the feeling that your in a latin speakeasy. I have only been there 4 times, and although it was only 4 times, i didnt find myself truly enjoying the place. Its too crowded for my taste and trying to get a drink from the bar on a friday or saturday is like waiting for tickets to a sold out concert. The music is fine, mediocre at best, Im sorry for all those who disagree but I see it what it is. The downstairs is safe haven from the crowd upstair, but can still be just as suffocating. If your a male coming alone or with other male friends, dont bother, you will not be allowed to enter. You must have an equal amount of guys and girls to enter. Unfortunatley all the hype that i received about this placed did not live up. The drinks are ok, nothing spectacular. However, if there is one thing i can say, is that it is better to come during the weekday so that you can truly enjoy its cultural concept.

Love love this place!

This is easily becoming one of my favorite bars in Williamsburg. The vibe is very chill - it reminds me of one of the tiki bars on a beach in Jamaica. Tuesday Reggae nights are the BEST! Went there last week and had a blast. The DJ, Chad Dubbz, was awesome. He played some old school reggae music that I haven't heard in a while. Then I went there on Wed night and also on Thursday night. LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!

Pat,
What are you talking about man? Bembe is a gem of a place! I suggest you give it another try pronto!

Obviously you seem to have missed the point. "A bunch of unkempt white kids banging off beat on djembes.." is a far cry from the expert and professional as well as multicultural patrons and musicians who are actually playing them. And you don't have to be familiar with percussionists or world music to notice that. BEMBE is a bar which still has the flavour of brooklyn and relishes in world music and a diverse crowd who are an even further cry from a "high school party". Perhaps a little lesson in BRazilian culture may help you enjoy your next stay better. BEMBE is a latin word meaning a party or celebration in honour of spirits that be, that they exist as you and I. It is also a cuban word used to refer to a specific style of drumming. Should you find yourself one evening perhaps in the mood for adventure than you should step back inside bembe with an open mind and realize that there exists no other place in manhattan nor brooklyn like it. It is non-racial, non-prejudice and is a highly relaxing, beautifully built bar where people of every culture step back to the basics, loving, being loved and dancing. It is void of pretension and attitude. It instead is filled with a plethora of yummy tropical drinks, a staff who goes far and beyond to ensure that everyone is having a good time, a hammock for you to rest that ever so ignorant and weary head and music that stands for meaning, i.e. reggae, afro-brazilian beats. The owners are more than gentle and generous and well the incense just adds to all that sexiness of hips swaying, booty shaking, drum playing, salsa dancing, capoiera jumping, peace loving environment. However if this is the attitude you have of a place that most resembles being placed on a tropical island with your closest friends, the greatest of music and excellent drinks, than you are not the kind of person a patron such as myself would like to share space with in such an invigorating, warm and beautiful atmosphere. Happy drummin'

WORST BAR EVER! A bunch of unkempt white kids banging off-beat on djembes, burning incense, Bob Marley and an awkward bar make for a lame atmosphere... Bembe reminds me more of a themed high school party than anything else. Awful, awful, awful...
