Boogaloo Bar

From City Search
"Perhaps its proximity to the noisy, elevated J, M, Z line is what magnifies the soothing feel of Boogaloo, whose sleek shades of gray, cushioned group seating, rich lighting and shimmery down-tempo music meld into a conversation-friendly atmosphere. While some may be daunted by the location—a part of Williamsburg that resembles areas of the Bronx more than it does Bedford Avenue—neighbors from all sides of the tracks have already warmed to the lounge's charms. House cocktails are named for local theaters, past and present; owner Chance Johnston's Commodore, a margarita made with guava juice, provides a tasty $7 buzz. The inviting back room looks ready for private parties—and the ladder in the corner leads to an upcoming outdoor deck."
From Village Voice
"You may need to hire a private detective to find the enigmatic and hidden Boogaloo Bar. The '60s-retro sci-fi-looking lounge seems more in step with the chic L.A. scene or a velvet-rope Manhattan clique than the dark and dirty underbelly of the J/M/Z tracks in Williamsburg. Inviting, yet too clinical to be comfortable, the all-white rooms are framed with rounded hobbit-hole archways and bar counters and tables accented by mysterious spot lighting; Alex and his droogies (see A Clockwork Orange) would fit right in among the unlikely sprinkling of hipsters and the slight air of seediness. DJs spin nightly."
From Shecky's
"This one's on the QT, on the down-low, and very hush-hush. Hidden away in South Williamsburg, by the subway tracks and tucked into the ground floor of an unassuming brownstone, local rock gods hold court and flirt with the memories of their basement beginnings, surrounded by beautiful people and their nearest and dearest-or something like that. Boogaloo stands out as an obvious purveyor of the myth that to be cool-to be exclusively cool in this town-visibility isn't on the A-list of attributes. If just anyone can find it, then it must not be worth finding. And if you're into that, Boogaloo will fulfill your secret speakeasy fantasy, with dancing and specialty drinks like the Brass Monkey thrown in for good measure."

Comments

Don't believe the previous post about Boogaloo only being cool for cokeheads. Like any bar, the crowd varies from night to night. The truth is, Boogaloo is a great little hidden spot, with terrific decor (reminds me of apocalyptic sci-fi ala Blade Runner). It's especially cool if you want to hear new, obscure or different music on a great system. I can't think of any other small bar that has as good or loud of a sound system. It's got a long bar, a small booth area and a dancefloor. It's pretty much perfect.

dont pay attention to what "black" wrote. this spot is great!
we are doing a new monthly therem, every first saturday.
come through to the kick off, Saturday - September 2nd!

FREE
11pm - 4am

w/ DJ's:

Drop The Lime
Zack Shadetek
Star Eyes
Mathhead

Unless you're a coke addict, stay away from Boogaloo. All the regulars are either on drugs or selling them, if you don't fall into either of those categories you won't have a good time.

Good Music. If you like Dub, Reggae, Trip-Hop, Soul House...I was pleased with the DJs and general vibe of the place. Very fun. I highly recommend.
