NY MAG SAYS: It's remarkable how little effort apparently went into Laila, which proffers reasonably-priced mixed drinks like vodka and sodas or gin and tonics at $5 each, but not much else. The raw, loft-like, narrowly rectangular space has a plain concrete floor and extremely unappealing cinder-block walls, which a thin coat of paint barely improves. The local art hanging here and there isn’t any more inspired, nor are the standard-issue metal bar tables and stools, which look like giveaways from one of those restaurant supply companies on the Bowery. (The vintage-y sofas and chairs in the front of the bar probably are giveaways.) Still, there's a pool table, perfect for a laid-back game, and a patio out back, which wouldn't be half-bad for a balmy summer night. There's also an open-mic night on Wednesdays that turns out some decent Williamsburg wannabes.

From Shecky's
"Laila is the food court of bars, and no, that is not an insult. Offering something for everyone (minus the 48-ounce Slurpees and fish-on-a-stick), Laila's owners apparently had a brainstorming session of things they wanted and decided to do it all: pool tournaments on Monday nights, summer movies on the patio, $2 beers daily from 6pm-8pm, a smoker-friendly garden, gallery space for local artists, and a very intimate performance space downstairs. The cool, no-attitude crowd is just as diverse. The place is jumping without feeling crowded, and the DJ mixes head-bobbing beats that you don't have to shout over to have a conversation. Insider tip: The dog wandering around, "Scout," belongs to the upstairs neighbor and functions as the bar mascot."

Comments

Laila lounge is a smaller version of what Galapagos is with regards to the art space. Aside from that, its different. The drink prices are often reasonable and a back patio that can put other bars out of business if they tuned it up a bit. The crowds are usually diverse and some what toned down at times. The DJ's are ok mixing house and hip hop. Although it is away from the main stream street of Bedford, it still draws a decent amount of people. My friend performed there once and it was pretty nice. The bar staff seems knowledgeable and friendly. All this place really needs is advertisement, however word of mouth seems to be the best advertisement. If you want something different, try Laila Lounge.
