Matchless
From NEW YORK CITY GOOD BEER GUIDE
"Smart, basic, and friendly new lounge bar (opened late summer 2003) with a number of microbrews on tap and red lamps shining down on the bar top - 12 of the 15 taps were microbrews on my last visit. Also recently started to stock a small but varied range of decent bottled beers. Opens at 4pm daily. Hopefully getting a cask beer engine soon. Bus B61 stops directly outside in the southbound direction; one block away northbound."
From New York Magazine
"The preserved "Shocks & Struts" sign outside this classy Greenpoint joint has become a neighborhood beacon. Narrower and darker than Enid's (across the street), this former auto shop feels more like a refuge for Greenpointers who find an extensive beer list (including 16 on draft) more impressive than a full evening of listening to Badly Drawn Boy's oeuvre. The back den of booths contains a Foosball table, a side room features impressive canvasses from local artists, and the gorgeous, amoeba-shaped copper bar in the center hosts old men of dubious sanity staring at post-collegiate girls deep into meditations on spirituality. Matchless needs more time to cement its identity, but an increase in bookings of local bands could call into question locals' allegiance to the bar on the opposite corner. What's more, the owner has already gotten in a street fight with high-schoolers on PCP, which in this neighborhood counts as an initiation ritual. -JADA YUAN"

I live close by and wanted to like this place, but the service here is so horrible, I just can't deal with it. The first time I went it was fine. The second time, I sat down at the bar with a friend and the bartender ignored us and proceeded to serve 4 people that came in after us. We were patient for a while, but when we tried to get the bartender's attention, we were treated like bad schoolchildren who didn't raise our hands. So we left. I'm a slow learner so I went back a 3rd time and this time the bartender was playing a video game for like 5 minutes when I really wanted a drink. So I left again. I wish I were more patient, but when I go to a bar, all I want is to be served a drink. That's all I'm asking for.

Matchless is a tried and true bar in Greenpoint. Though the service can be lousy, the drinks are good/fair-priced, they have a pool table, and a good atmosphere. Lovers of live music, rejoice- they have live bands frequently. For those who hate live music, avoid Thursday and Sundays...
