CITY SEARCH SAYS: The Charleston is a tackily appealing, dimly lit room. The ancient bar stretches down the side, and is usually manned by Benny, the proprietor for uncounted decades. A room in the back is cozy, with semicircular booths and soft red lighting. Music from Sinatra's day through the '70s is covered on a jukebox whose seriously old speakers make everything sound a little bit better for being a little bit worse. Benny owns the pizza kitchen next door as well, in case you need something with your beer. Even as Bedford Avenue has become the new Champs-Elysees, the Charleston still holds onto an interesting mix of hip kids and some of the neighborhood's old guard, by which we mean, like, 70-year-old Polish guys. A stage in the back room also plays home to local bands, who have made the Charleston something of a hip venue for up-and-coming art rockers.

I'm not sure who has been going into this bar and reviewing it but the main review is pretty outdated. It's always pretty rocking, has decent music, and most of the staff is chill and polite. The weekends can get a little b/t but otherwise its always a fun time. Full of the least amount of hipsters I've seen on bedford. Plus not that many testosterone fueled jackasses.
oh yeah they have bands and free pizza with drinks. Pop that in your microwave.

Worst bartenders. For a dive bar like this you would expect a cool staff, but the guys that work here act like stressed out little girls. I've seen people kicked out for the most ridiculous bullshit. You know a bar is lame when you feel like there are a list of rules to abide by. People go out to let loose not feel like they're at work. It wasn't always like this there, but I recommend going to one of the many other bars in the area that provide a free atmosphere.

hot bartenders. nuff said.

I actually saw this woman who got left the comment below get thrown out of the bar! It should be noted that this occurred during broad day light in the afternoon after she walked in and screamed "Do I have to have a d*ck to get a drink in this place??" The bartender walked over to her and asked her to to stop cursing. After she continued yelling about women not being served in the bar (four other women were drinking there) the bartender pointed to the door and told her and her two friends they had to leave. The girl knew she was wrong and the bartender handled it pretty smoothly. The service in this place isn't always the best but I can't let this woman post on here without giving an eyewitness account! Funny!!

terrible. Pizza tastes like shit and the bartenders there all have bad fucking attitudes. save yourself the frustration, buy yourself a 40, pop an elios in the toaster and ask your roommates to verbally berrate you. It'll at least save you the trip over there.

Usually this place is alright but I had a TERRIBLE experience at this bar last night. I showed up here with two male friends. One was promptly served, however, the bartender refused to serve my other friend and I. He sat at the bar chit chatting knowing bery well we were sitting there waiting for a drink. Then he proceeded to walk outside and look around, came back in and STILL refused to serve us. I walked over to where he was standing near the bar and he said, "oh here's one of them". Not sure if he was referring to me being a woman or to my other friend he wouldn't serve. Finally after 15 minutes I asked if you had to be a man to get a drink here and he made his way over in 1 second flat. Then kicked us out. Not sure if this guy was plain sexist or homophobic. The bottom line is this is not a friendly place unless you fit into their idea of the perfec. I will never go back to this bar again.

I freakin' LOVE The Charleston. At first I tried to persuade my friends to come into Manhattan, and was sooo not into going to Bklyn. First we went to Anytime Bar, and all I can say is overpriced and pretentious. Weak!! Then the night was saved by going to The Charleston. Great atmosphere. Love the guys at the door. Love the bartenders, and big-ass cheap strong drinks, with free pizza, nuff said.

HIP KIDS? Who are you kidding? Im not sure what your definition of HIP is, infact who uses that word anymore. However, the venue is somewhat intriguing and fun. The crowd is the same crowd that you may find all along bedford ave. This place is a bit similar to Cyn, except that the Charleston offers more to its patrons and with the opening of its pizza parlor on the side, it makes it that much more interesting. They usually have bands playing there which makes for an evening of happiness. I actually like this bar, it has a low level of testerone junkies which makes it delightful. HIP KIDS.. thats funny

To reply to Dan's comment from 3/9/2006- Yeah the place has been shut down since December-but it was open and serving up pizza and booze as of 6/21/2006.

Now what I wanted to say-
I was in there for the first time the day after Thanksgiving...the bar really has a good ambience happenning-

Its funny that I have lived in Greenpoint my whole life and have passed by the Charleston all the time- but didnt go in there until recently-whats up with that?

Any idea whats up with the Charleston.? i'm hearing they've been closed sice December.

We played at the Charleston on Saturday, December 17th. Our guitarist said it very well: "I feel more comfortable in here than in any other bar I've been in outside of Jersey. Probably because there's absolutely nothing cool about this place at all."

The Charleston is wonderfully cool because it is so not cool. The fact that it's one of the few bars on Bedford that is almost always empty makes no sense at all. And it makes all the sense in the world.

I love the Charleston, with its pink and purple balloons, its absurd light show, its so-so pizza, its super-sexy soulful jukebox, its beat-to-shit booths, its black and red tiled floor, its old couples, and its aloof bartender. I really love everything about it.
