WE SAY: A non-touristy staple. It has a maroon pool table, a pinball machine, and a an occasionally used DJ's booth populate the back. It is a largish space, and the air conditioning rocks in the summer. Beers start at $4 or so and the bartenders are always competent and often quite friendly. Small but solid tap selection (Guinness, Brooklyn Beers, etc.) and in general, no b.s. or hassles. Definitely worth visiting and the growing gay scene at The Abbey makes this bar even more appealing whether you are straight, gay, or undecided. Plus the jukebox will pleases fans of early 90's indie.

WE SAY: One of our favorite Bedford-stop bars. Brooklyn Ale House is completely lacking in pretense and attracts a surprisingly hipster-free and tourist-free crowd. The beer selection is great and the vibe reminds us of the neighborhood circa 1995. Dog lovers especially like Brooklyn Ale House since the bar is dog-friendly.

CITY SEARCH SAYS: Guarded by an anonymous steel door, this red-lit loft has a warm, hideaway feel. Artists and other youthful regulars ensconce themselves in the sunken, wraparound banquettes, ascend to the balcony, or shoot pool in back. Most tend to cluster around the bar, whose ornate liquor shelf brings more than a distinctive touch--it once furnished a Chicago hangout frequented by Capone himself. There's no denying the hearty, homemade personal pies, which come free with each drink. While mixed drinks are made with canned juices and the Guinness isn't the fullest bodied in town, tap beers including Hoegaarden and Hefeweizen brightly complement the grub. To triple the combo, smokers may puff away on the glassed-in, upstairs patio.

DIRECTIONS: From Bedford Ave take a right of Bedford Ave. The bar will be on your right between North 7 & 8th Streets.

SUBWAY: L Train to Bedford Ave
CITY SEARCH SAYS: The Charleston is a tackily appealing, dimly lit room. The ancient bar stretches down the side, and is usually manned by Benny, the proprietor for uncounted decades. A room in the back is cozy, with semicircular booths and soft red lighting. Music from Sinatra's day through the '70s is covered on a jukebox whose seriously old speakers make everything sound a little bit better for being a little bit worse. Benny owns the pizza kitchen next door as well, in case you need something with your beer. Even as Bedford Avenue has become the new Champs-Elysees, the Charleston still holds onto an interesting mix of hip kids and some of the neighborhood's old guard, by which we mean, like, 70-year-old Polish guys. A stage in the back room also plays home to local bands, who have made the Charleston something of a hip venue for up-and-coming art rockers.

NY MAG SAYS: At his day job as a sculptor, owner John Clement renders sinuous shapes in rough industrial materials, but the design touches in his railroad barroom are non-ostentatious: Just a few antlers and antique beer cans adorn the slate-grey walls. A possibly overly generous happy hour special encourages drinkers to be serious about their craft, which they practice at the sidewalk seats during the summer, at the people-watching-perfect window perches, or at the bar where unharried attendants custom cater drinks such as a peanut-butter and jelly shot (Stoli raspberry and Frangelico) and dole out beers from the esoteric and often-changing varieties on tap. Bargain-hunters choose sides between two long-running specials: The Patriot is a PBR can and a shot of Jim Beam while the Federale pairs Tecate with a Sauza shot.

NY MAG SAYS: Like a homesteader who finally landed a house on Main Street, the owner of Williamsburg's almost impossibly out-of-the way dive Rockstar Bar has set up a second joint just two blocks from the Bedford Avenue subway stop. Given the prime location, you’d think that this cozy, red-and-brown candy-striped room would teem with the young and fashionable. But Cyn, like its predecessor Rain Lounge, is a chasm in the middle of the swirling hipness that surrounds. Aside from the replacement of the former tenant's hip-hop soundtrack with an internet jukebox and DJ's spinning rock, little has changed. Amidst the dim red lighting and the modest crowds, you come here not because you want to join the see-and-be-seen carnival outside, but because you want to escape it with a $2 Pabst in the spacious back garden

WE SAY: A small, warm wine bar with delicious cheeses. D.O.C., as you may know, stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata. It's a phrase one often finds on the labels of Italian wines and it means "controlled place name." When one sees D.O.C. on a bottle of wine one's confidence is boosted: it means the wine within comes from a legally defined wine region where producers must watch the quality of their wines lest they face governmental wrath.

NY MAG SAYS: When the Misfits sang about a "hybrid moment," they might have been referring to the perfect combination of Bellevue Bar's seedy Hell's Kitchen ambiance and Williamsburg's gritty waterfront that has resulted in the birth of Duff’s. Bellevue Bar was a dirty, red-lit den with pin-up murals and dusty horror artifacts sharing shelf space with the bottles. Owner Jimmy Duff has moved his collection of baby skulls and taxidermy, along with his staff of inebriation specialists, to a former check cashing store on the other side of the river. He's also added a nice big patio with built-in grill, and kept the metal-heavy jukebox and cheap drink specials that made Bellevue a dive cum laude. Patron hygiene ranges from "fashionably unkempt" to "possibly homeless"--yet another sign that Jimmy Duff hasn't left Port Authority too far behind--but the bar and its bathroom are surprisingly clean. And though Bellevue regular Dancing Dominick won't be frequenting the new space (he passed away after a full life of shimmying for drinks), he won't be forgotten: A cut-out photo of his manic grin adorns CDs in the jukebox. Look out for free hot dogs in warmer weather when Duff's occasionally fires up their outdoor grill.

WEBSITE:: www.galapagosartspace.com
NY MAG SAYS: Galapagos bills itself as an art, music, dance, theater and performance space, gallery and, finally, bar. It sounds ambitious, and it is. The space is so huge that, whether it's from the empty stage, high tables with barstools, the bar itself or the oversized back room, you'll have plenty of room from which to scan the crowd that just lumbered off the L train. There'd be even more square footage if the entire front end weren't occupied by a dark, rectangular reflecting pool. Galapagos may be the only public place in town where (while imbibing) you can hear a reading of Shakespeare's Tempest, shimmy to live Cuban music and see trapeze artists all in the same month

CITY SEARCH SAYS: Once a regular old-neighborhood hangout, this congenial bar has been steadily usurped by the cool youngsters who pile in every weekend. White Christmas lights and strings of seasonal decorations create a festive spirit in an otherwise plain room, which is furnished with red booths and bar stools, and a jukebox filled with rock-and-roll and retro standards. Despite the changes in clientele, the biggest draw remains the 32-ounce Styrofoam cup of Bud for $3.50.

WEBSITE: www.thegutterbrooklyn.com
GOTHAMIST SAYS: The first bowling alley to open in Brooklyn in (we can't even believe this) nearly 50 years is about to open up! The Gutter is new...but the feeling old. Brought to you by two of the same people who brought you Barcade, expect a similar vibe. There's a Schlitz globe spinning over the shoe counter, vintage bowling items adorning the bar, old lamps throughout, and even some TVs with rabbit ear antennas.

You won't find flashy flatscreens displaying your scores and advertisements hanging above the lanes. The scoring machines are straight out of the past, and the only advertisements are on the pin clearing machine. Those ads are likely for establishments in a town far far away, however -- as the equipment was all purchased from an old bowling alley in the midwest.

THRILLIST SAYS: The most notable throwback's the price: $6 games ($7 on weekends) and $4 shoes -- which everyone will steal, forcing Gutter to reticently inaugurate this cash-cow of ill repute: "Taking Care of Business Tuesdays (Now With Lasers!)".

GOTHAMIST SAYS: The aptly titled and recently opened Hope Lounge (it's on Hope Street), might might seem a little too tranquil at first. The enormous red walls are sporadically graced with signs and Indian statues, but if there is a theme, it’s not readily apparent. Right now, it is huge, clean, and spare, which accentuates the high ceilings and abundant seating. With so much space they have enough room to house a regular schedule of live acts, most starting around 9 or 10, in the usual jazz-bluegrass-D.J. vein. You know, something for everyone. he long list of musical acts may tempt you to frequent the hopping night scene, but for the thrifty we’d highly suggest the long happy hour. From 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, all drinks are $2 off, which makes thinking of what deal you want especially fun. Sure you could discount that Corona, but aim high and you’ll be rewarded. Specifically, order a glass of Chimay, the populist Trappist beer. It would normally run you $8, which is a find by most Manhattan standards. We’ve seen some places charge more than $12. But during happy hour it is only $6, and they have both the Chimay Rouge and Bleue. The latter of which is about 9% alcohol, twice that of normal beer. So be careful. While you’re lounging on one of the red couches in the huge space thinking about all that money you’re saving, keep tabs on the number of bottles you’re plowing through. Our one left us quickly buzzed, and two will probably get you ready for the evening entertainment. After that, we here at Gothamist release responsibility and just kindly suggest you get some food in your stomach. They have a full menu.

SHECKY'S SAYS: Tired of waiting three hours for that text that reveals you finally scored a table at Milk and Honey? Now that even the most snobbish city dweller knows that Brooklyn has more to offer than dive bars and seedy one night stands, why not head to Williamsburg for your fancy cocktail fix? You'll be kickin' it with a more sophisticated set (i.e., actual cool people) that prefers the Last Word (gin, maraschino, chartreuse, and lime, $9) to a watered down whiskey. While the front room, with its marble topped tables and shelves of liquor that the bartender reaches by ladder, is the main hub of activity, the side rooms are just as intoxicating. NY MAG SAYS: At last: an Irish-like pub for people who generally hate Irish-like pubs, Iona's sprightly young staff (and their accents) couldn't be more appealing; they want you to pick your favorite wooden bench and stay a while. Inside this former candy store things are dim and spare, and don't expect to see gimmicky leprechaun figures or posters bearing limericks. Instead, you'll hear drum-and-bass mixes or classic rock--and not too loud, either. A little back alcove is perfect for late-night snogging, and the fact that the bar's not filled with lecherous old Irishmen pawing every female in sight is a blessing. That tradition is being kept alive instead by the neighborhood hipster boys.

NY MAG SAYS: It's remarkable how little effort apparently went into Laila, which proffers reasonably-priced mixed drinks like vodka and sodas or gin and tonics at $5 each, but not much else. The raw, loft-like, narrowly rectangular space has a plain concrete floor and extremely unappealing cinder-block walls, which a thin coat of paint barely improves. The local art hanging here and there isn’t any more inspired, nor are the standard-issue metal bar tables and stools, which look like giveaways from one of those restaurant supply companies on the Bowery. (The vintage-y sofas and chairs in the front of the bar probably are giveaways.) Still, there's a pool table, perfect for a laid-back game, and a patio out back, which wouldn't be half-bad for a balmy summer night. There's also an open-mic night on Wednesdays that turns out some decent Williamsburg wannabes.

NY MAG SAYS: Those familiar with the stereotypical Williamsburg bar-goer will be shocked upon crossing the bouncer-guarded threshold of this oddball basement karaoke lounge. Instead of waifish, college-aged rockers ironically impersonating Axl Rose, older, leather-jacketed Goodfellas extras, perhaps attracted by the low-key atmosphere and Brooklyn prices, belt earnest renditions of their favorite Sinatra and Frankie Valli tunes, their courage lubricated by vaguely Polynesian cocktails such as a banana daiquiri that tastes uncannily like a Runt candy. Among the 1,000 songs lies plenty of non-grandpa fare, too, but don't expect a kitschy birthday party spot: While the comfy pleather banquettes and long backlit bar are vaguely glam, the neon track lighting and polka-dotted pillars add a seedy veneer that isn't quite bad enough to be good.

BROOKLYN PAPER SAYS: On a recent Monday night, Williamsburg's newest sports bar was packed. Everyone in Mulholland's had one thing in common: a thirst for free beer. Free beer may, in fact, be the only explanation for beefy fraternity types in football jerseys and the neighborhood's trademarked bespectacled hipster to be mingling; when I returned the following Wednesday, the bar had lost the grandeur of its opening and was nearly empty. Far from the energetic nightspots that Billyburg is known for, Mulholland's felt more like a bar in a strip mall. But Sean Mulholland, who owns the watering hole along with his brother Bill, insisted that the neighborhood's chic, young residents are really "closet sports fans." The Mulholland brothers spent years working in bars, clubs and restaurants -- most recently Eugene, a glossy lounge in Manhattan -- and had been looking to buy their own spot for the past two years. Although they initially looked at Manhattan's Lower East Side, Williamsburg's cheaper rents and less commercial vibe won them over. "We just fell in love with the neighborhood," said Sean. "It's like a small town -- everyone's really sweet. It's almost like there's a Midwest feel, which we think is awesome!" Local residents might quibble with his assertion that they're akin to Midwesterners, but the Grand Street corridor is quickly becoming more high-end, and therefore more open to a wider variety of nightlife options. NY MAG SAYS: Bowery Presents, the bookers behind Webster Hall and Bowery Ballroom, have expanded their indie empire again with the rebirth and renaming of the former Northsix. The fancy face-lift stretches the space from two to three levels (with bars to match), adds balcony seating, and reshapes the interior via a curved wall for optimized acoustics. With the removal of the steel columns, sightlines were also markedly improved. And as if the cosmetic modifications weren't enough, the inaugural lineup put the previous incarnation's schedule to shame; Top notch indie acts and veteran critical faves look sure to pack the house while a gamut of great, on-the-verge bands should solidify the rep on the street.

NY PRESS SAYS: There is a smattering of tapas joints amid the ever-expanding dining landscape of Williamsburg, and most of them feel about as authentic as the infamous "loft-style" luxury apartment buildings that have been popping up in the neighborhood even more rapidly than restaurants. That changed three months ago, when Nita Nita, a tapas bar actually worth venturing into, opened its doors. Plate-glass storefront windows and a yawning set of doors reveal a candlelit interior with warm tones and clean lines that don't try too hard. Nita Nita's menu is Spanish-inspired and eclectic and the recipe list, like the decor, is pared-down. And with a short but appealing selection of wine, food and cocktails, patrons feel like they've stepped into the local bar they've always looked for, but classier, and with a delicate buttery scent calling to them from the kitchen. The cozy interior of Nita Nita was the perfect spot for dinner one rainy summer night since the place never feels too crowded, but there are always just enough people chatting with owner Samantha Di Stefano, or petting the part-time resident dog for you to feel welcome....An alcove behind the kitchen offers more seating, a well-stocked jukebox and a door to the back garden, which, while we visited, was being steadily drummed by rain. Although Nita Nita's mixed drink specials ($10 each), including the Tequila Mockingbird and Ginger Rummy, are the most innovative part of the menu, an insidious hangover prevented me from diving into the cocktail options. However, compelled by my duty as a responsible journalist, I returned the following night to try the Barton Pear, an insanely good combination of Grey Goose Lapoire, fresh pineapple and orange juice, seven up and a few other ingredients I failed to note as the drink went to work on my short-term memory. We started with an appetizer special of brie on a toasted baguette alongside a roasted leek soup ($10). The soup smelled great, but turned out to be somewhat bland, though inoffensive, sprinkled with refreshing parsley to give it a little kick. The bread was fresh and flaky, and the brie warm—the perfect addition. Next, we ordered the sauteed greens and shaved parm ($5) next, and got exactly what you'd want from this simple dish. Chopped collards were cooked in butter just long enough to take the edge off the bitter vegetable, release its flavor and keep a crisp freshness intact. Unfortunately, the Mojo potatoes ($5) were disappointing, drenched as they were in a peppery red sauce, but oddly lacking in spice. A salad of cranberries, sliced almonds and feta dressing over pedestrian mixed greens ($6 special, price varies) is a fresh and satisfying, if not massively original, flavor combination. My friend had the Mojo chicken ($7) next: three drumsticks nestled together with a cucumber dipping sauce on a white porcelain plate. The meat was tender, and fell off the bone easily, with a slight spiciness nicely complemented by the cool cucumber. Meanwhile, I inhaled the Cheese Board ($12), a delightfully stinky mix including a sharp aged Gouda that I could taste in the back of my mouth, complimented by apple slices and quince paste. The bar pizza ($6) is a light, cheesy take on Turkish-style pitza, with fresh mozzarella and just enough sauce drizzled over a nicely crisp flatbread. We finished off our meal by sharing a chocolate chip cookie ($2)--after such girl-centric conversation we chose to further the stereotype by daintily considering our figures. The dessert was phenomenal. Though it tasted like almost pure sugar, its gooeyness and melt-in-your mouth perfection was like some long-forgotten childhood memory.

VILLAGE VOICE SAYS: On a near-desolate street in north Williamsburg, a noncultural renaissance has begun. Till recently, the signs of gentrification on this block consisted of a cheese shop, a hookah bar, and a Mexican fast food restaurant opposite graffitied trailers and abandoned lots. But when Oulu (170 North 4th Street, Brooklyn) opened a month ago, hipsters finally entered their promised land and became old school. The lounge, named for the northern Finnish city, introduces us to what the owners call "Williamsburg 2.0," a neighborhood of creative professionals, dwellers of the future luxury condos sprouting up along North 4th Street. The crumbling landscape may once have been dangerous for some, charming for others; to the new kids on the block, it's their Manifest Destiny. Oulu's name and elements of its design were inspired by the sixth largest city in Finland--a place the owners, married couple Ande Bordages and Anthony Pace, have never been. Pace dreamed of honeymooning off the beaten path and discovered Oulu in his research. But he and Bordages used their trip money to open their own version in Brooklyn instead. The West Village-based couple describes Williamsburg 2.0 in terms of pioneers and settlers. "Pioneers get shot," said Pace, "but settlers get land." Based on Pace's idea of a "super-modern river cottage," the airy lounge gets its woodsiness from smooth, tree-trunk-length benches and curved wall-mounted tables, and its greenery from the delightful "vertical garden" of succulents mounted upon the façade. A blown-up photograph of a serene forest lake and cabin adorns the wall nearest the bar, transporting patrons--graphic designers, architects, and other well-off freelancers--to peaceful, far-away environs with nary a wireless connection. The deeply considered natural elements complement the bare, dim bulbs, concrete floor, and the massive glass garage door that gives insiders a view of the remains of 4th Street's wilderness. The relationship to the city of Oulu ends with the physical space. The owners are adamant their inspiration not be a theme that can become mired in kitsch (in contrast to those hipsters who came to Williamsburg 1.0 embracing kitsch). There is just one Finnish beer (Sinebrychoff, $6), and while some cocktails have Nordic names, they are local creations by the thoughtful bar staff. At $9 each, standouts include the Victorian Cocktail, a concoction of gin, Earl Grey tea, and apple juice, and the Frostbite, a curious combination of pineapple juice and mint in a vodka martini. Wines ($7 a glass) and domestic beers (from $5) round out the menu. Plans for a "Sunday Bloody Mary Sunday" liquid brunch are in the works. On a midweek night, the crowd at Oulu was thin, the indie rock and lounge music low enough to let the patrons talk about design or art or $500,000 studios over a drink. Saturdays feature DJs playing rock, indie, and "esoterica," drawing growing numbers of the new locals--those brave, intrepid colonists who have come to tame wild, wild Williamsburg.

NY MAG SAYS: Ivan Aohut, part of the team that turned Astoria's Bohemian Hall into a destination back in 2000 now partners with a couple of Czech friends and his wife Joanna, a private chef who cooks hearty dishes like roasted pork tenderloin topped with prunes and porter beer sauce and served with potato dumplings and red cabbage. Aohut, who built the outdoor bar at Bohemia, has built his solo venture to resemble a 1890s Austrio-Hungarian beer hall, with communal tables made from 150-year-old barn wood. The garden, where burgers and an array of wursts are grilled, will eventually have infrared heating under its retractable canopy.

NY MAG SAYS: Big, round, shiny tables line the walls at Savalas, echoing the shapes of the owner cousins' bald pates. (The name is a nod to the celebrity they most resemble.) Also round and shiny are the new wave and indie rock records spun by an impressive roster of DJs with the help of a cutting-edge sound system. Groovy tiled walls, hand blown-glass emitting red light, and plenty of open floor space make this smallish room feel like a miniature club: In the early evening, it can feel a bit too petite, but late at night, the cheery, not-aggressively-hip crowd most certainly gets down, at which point an awning-protected front porch provides refuge. At the bar, vodkas flavored with seasonal ingredients along with the occasional experimental touch are an enticing alternative to the solid selection of tap beer, except when the infusions are ill-conceived: Oreo-infused martini, anyone?

GOTHAMIST SAYS: The beautifully lit storefront bar comes from a longtime New Yorker and bartender Matt Webber (most recently of The Cutting Room). Because Webber isn't Chris Noth, he hasn't brought beautiful blondes behind the bar (yet) and is doing everything himself, from fresh juices to choosing the art (hint: look carefully at the provenance of the reclining nude near the front door). "Why a piano bar, though?" we asked. Because, he said, he wanted something that hipsters wouldn't be into. Okay. While his candor is refreshing, on one side of us was a cute, skinny guy showing off his star tattoo and on another a girl who looked like a Scarlett Johansson circa her mullet fascination. We wonder what these cute kids could be called disparagingly instead of hipsters. Soft Spot is close to the Bedford L train stop but unlike many of the bars and restaurants that price drinks like they are really still in Manhattan, the cocktails here top out around $7. With fresh pomegranate juice and orange slices, the pomegranate margarita was a good choice, especially for sipping in the beautiful back garden, and strong and our friend opted for a house special, the Soft Peach. The bar was offering two options- one for $6 or 2 for $10, clearly working on a similar principle of the 4-8pm happy hour (2 for 1 on all beer, most $4). And the Soft Peach, with Absolute Peach, Triple Sec and a "secret" lemon lime sour mix does go down easy, so much that we wonder if the 2 for $10 should be changed to give us a twenty and we'll give you a pitcher, though you won't be able to walk far when it's empty. Our friend thought the special tasted like "like homemade peach ice cream but not sweet" but it just tasted like summer to us. The place can serve a good drink under good lighting and employs a good piano player (though billing him a starving artist and actually having the tip jar foisted upon everyone at the bar is a little much). Check it out while there is still prime garden drinking time and enjoy the drinks, however they were conceived.
