NY MAG SAYS: In 2003, Jede Brahma (who also owns nearby Art Land) took over a struggling, almost exclusively Latino bar in a rapidly shifting neighborhood and transformed it into an amiably scruffy spot to bridge the gap between longtime residents and younger transplants. Named Balanza (Spanish for "balance"), the orange-bronze space hosts heavy metal battle-of-the-bands contests, djs and burlesque shows for half its clientele and pool league tournaments (the home team's trophies line one wall) and live Latin acts for the other. On a typical night, both sides come together to recline on beat-up couches or dangle bottles of Negra Modelo at the painted-mahogany bar. The jukebox is expansive (Marc Anthony and Lynyrd Skynyrd) while the low-priced Mexican beer reflects the idea that some tastes are universal.

NY MAG SAYS: Williamsburg's Beco has flown pretty much under the radar during the month it's been open—maybe because it's located in a sort of Williamsburg-Greenpoint netherland, but also because the owners wanted to keep the place a neighborhood secret while getting it off the ground. Rather than a full-blown restaurant like Miss Favela, David Giddings says he and his partners envisioned it as a modest São Paolo boteco, where you can laze about while popping made-to-order pão de queijo and sip cocktails made with fresh passion fruit and pressed sugar cane. As Giddings describes it, the décor harks back to the days of Pele, and "doesn't scream 'Brazil' in your face, but it's more like what a boteco is—a real hangout." Starting next week, you'll be able to hang there during a brunch that will include açaí and granola, omelettes, bife a cavalo (Brazilians refer to their steak and eggs as "steak on horseback"), and a feijoada that's prepared over the course of two days by a Carioca chef, Casia Steinberg (Fabiane Lima, the Brazilian owner of Fabiane's, also consulted on the menu).

GOTHAMIST SAYS: The aptly titled and recently opened Hope Lounge (it's on Hope Street), might might seem a little too tranquil at first. The enormous red walls are sporadically graced with signs and Indian statues, but if there is a theme, it’s not readily apparent. Right now, it is huge, clean, and spare, which accentuates the high ceilings and abundant seating. With so much space they have enough room to house a regular schedule of live acts, most starting around 9 or 10, in the usual jazz-bluegrass-D.J. vein. You know, something for everyone. he long list of musical acts may tempt you to frequent the hopping night scene, but for the thrifty we’d highly suggest the long happy hour. From 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, all drinks are $2 off, which makes thinking of what deal you want especially fun. Sure you could discount that Corona, but aim high and you’ll be rewarded. Specifically, order a glass of Chimay, the populist Trappist beer. It would normally run you $8, which is a find by most Manhattan standards. We’ve seen some places charge more than $12. But during happy hour it is only $6, and they have both the Chimay Rouge and Bleue. The latter of which is about 9% alcohol, twice that of normal beer. So be careful. While you’re lounging on one of the red couches in the huge space thinking about all that money you’re saving, keep tabs on the number of bottles you’re plowing through. Our one left us quickly buzzed, and two will probably get you ready for the evening entertainment. After that, we here at Gothamist release responsibility and just kindly suggest you get some food in your stomach. They have a full menu.

EATER SAYS: Bars are a dime a dozen in Williamsburg, but the pedigree of the team behind Huckleberry Bar sets it apart from the pack (two clichés in one sentence!). Owners Stephanie Schneider and Andrew Boggs and chef Seth Johnson have all done time in one or more of Danny Meyer's joints. They are offering, per Lady Strongbuzz, 'well-valued wines by the glass, inventive seasonal cocktails and carefully chosen imported and domestic beers' as well as small plates (natch). It all seems a bit fancy for East Williamsburg, but hey, if Wombat can survive over there...

Where do you go when you've outgrown Last Night's Party but you're not quite ready to stop being cool? Hidden behind an all-but-unmarked hallway entrance, rarely crowded, and covered in beautiful barn-wood paneling, this spacious, serene lounge is a haven for Williamsburg's gracefully aging artists and intellectuals. The owners play an unobtrusive mix of Pavement, Gorillaz, and Bowie off their iPods, and there's a glassed-in, elevated smoking lounge out back for a quiet cigarette and a Laphroaig on the rocks. It's a candlelit oasis where you can talk Foucault without ever being asked if he played Bowery Ballroom last week.

CITY SEARCH SAYS: The front cafe--filled with plants, coffee tables, and a distressed armoire full of board games and books--offers a great place to read or chat up a stranger. During the daylight hours, neighborhood 20-somethings sans day jobs nibble on snacks, ranging from more earthy fare like bagels and hummus to sweeter options like homemade cupcakes with sprinkles. The coffee is high-test. When the sun goes down, folks head to the romantic back room, where creepy portraits decorate the red walls, and the rusty chandelier casts a haunted-house glow. The Cat acts like a very hip neighborhood community center, hosting everything from a weekly chess tournament to a Goth dance night. The events, listed on its website, are as free-form as the clientele. Stop by midday and enjoy the eclectic setting and homey touches: Flying angels hanging from the ceiling and servings of beans or stew from the crock pot.

BROOKLYN PAPER SAYS: On a recent Monday night, Williamsburg's newest sports bar was packed. Everyone in Mulholland's had one thing in common: a thirst for free beer. Free beer may, in fact, be the only explanation for beefy fraternity types in football jerseys and the neighborhood's trademarked bespectacled hipster to be mingling; when I returned the following Wednesday, the bar had lost the grandeur of its opening and was nearly empty. Far from the energetic nightspots that Billyburg is known for, Mulholland's felt more like a bar in a strip mall. But Sean Mulholland, who owns the watering hole along with his brother Bill, insisted that the neighborhood's chic, young residents are really "closet sports fans." The Mulholland brothers spent years working in bars, clubs and restaurants -- most recently Eugene, a glossy lounge in Manhattan -- and had been looking to buy their own spot for the past two years. Although they initially looked at Manhattan's Lower East Side, Williamsburg's cheaper rents and less commercial vibe won them over. "We just fell in love with the neighborhood," said Sean. "It's like a small town -- everyone's really sweet. It's almost like there's a Midwest feel, which we think is awesome!" Local residents might quibble with his assertion that they're akin to Midwesterners, but the Grand Street corridor is quickly becoming more high-end, and therefore more open to a wider variety of nightlife options. KEEP READING.

PAPER SAYS: "Walking into Pete's Candy Store, on a still-lonely stretch in Williamsburg, is like checking into a Norman Bates boutique hotel on a particularly Psycho night. Housed in a former 40s soda parlor with a "dicey" back room, Pete’s bears all the scars of its pockmarked past. The owners took pains to maintain a nod-and-wink seediness that's all the more convincing with thrashing punk tunes blaring and a few drinks swilling in you. The wrong-side-of-the-tracks vibe ends behind the bar, which serves up all the best Brooklyn lagers as well as civilized, well-made cocktails like mojitos, Absolut Citron cosmopolitans and Pete's Manhattans, made with Maker's Mark ($6 and under)."

NY MAG SAYS: "In any other location, the industrial-sized, pine-planked Redd's would be hopping on a Friday night, its plush couches and lantern-lit patio filled with groups of drinkers. Apparently it takes a little more of a gimmick—like Barcade's trove of vintage video games or Royal Oak's college-age sleaze—to earn the attention of Williamsburg bar-goers. But what Redd's lacks in novelty it makes up for in comfort: A stack of wax-paper bags waits to be filled with gratis popcorn, and the classic-rock jukebox, spiked with Sonic Youth and Elvis Costello, treads on pleasantly familiar ground. In the winter, bartenders heat up toddies and apple cider on hot plates. Next to a red, illuminated Esso gas pump, a makeshift stage hosts the occasional jazz band or singer-songwriter, and the bar has an accommodating booking policy toward eager acts. Of course, the lack of a crowd affords an opportunity, too: Curl up with a few friends and a pint of Summer Blue Point, and lounge like you own the place."

NY MAG SAYS: Once an industrial space, this high-ceilinged room now feels more like a social club, with its creamy wainscoting, low lighting, and small tables clustered around a central bar. By day, the neighborhood freelance brigade settles in with laptops and books; at night, twentysomethings slide into the benches to share stories and plates of slightly old-fashioned comfort food. (People-watching is an indoor sport here, since the restaurant is several steps above ground level and there aren’t any large windows facing the street.) Some menu choices are simple to the point of tedium, like the cucumber-vinaigrette salad. A better bet is the tangy, crisply topped macaroni and cheese. (Spring for the optional bacon and the oozing dish gets crowned with richly marbled strips.) The bratwursts--both traditional and vegetarian--also hit the mark, with plump, juicy sausages and sauerkraut overflowing the buns. The namesake teas are here in force, with dozens of brews including mate, greens, and bracing British blacks. These come in large glass beer mugs, so watch out for that heat conductivity.

A modest liquor selection but it too holds some gems- Blanton's, Woodford Reserve. Young, laid-back, hipster clientele come for the ambiance, DJ and bands, and the generous happy hour (5-8). Sport for the bored- sit at the bar and try to land lemon peels from your martini atop the bust of JFK on the ancient beer fridge.
