Bloc Party on Letterman
From press release:
It’s already been quite a year for London, England’s Bloc Party: their debut, Silent Alarm (Vice Records), was released last month to a large heaping of critical acclaim on an international scale. Their first tour of the US has been packed with sold out, incredible shows. And now they’re making their nationwide television debut on “Late Show with David Letterman” this evening. Check them out tonight at 11:30 on NBC.

Cool. I’ll be sure to tune in…
Isn’t Letterman on CBS?
you know, silent alarm isnt a bad record but it makes me uncomfortable when bands wear their influences too close to the surface. when i listen to this record i hear spoon telephono and interpol. thats it.
whats so remarkable about these guys? i dont get it.
me neither… i heard the record, “banquet” is a standout track, but otherwise it’s all pretty run-of-the-mill post-franz dance punk. (not that there’s anything wrong with that, i guess. not my thing.)
i recommend: stars, dirty on purpose, pitty sing, and the winter pageant. the new beck, too. i’ll leave the spazz disco rock to the “hat tilted at a 45 degree angle” set.
I can’t stand Bloc Party, but for you jackasses to imply that they rip-off, or are even “influenced” by Interpol and/or Franz Ferdinand is just plain fucking stupid… I don’t doubt that they have better record collections than that. They’re just not a very good band.
the only thing i really like about these dudes are the remixes by four tet, mogwai m83 on their japanese release. whatevs
You don’t have to like Bloc Party, but to say that there’s nothing special about them or that they sound like franz ferdinand is probably the most ingorant thing you could possibly say. All that says is that you haven’t actually listened to either one of those bands. The drumming alone puts Bloc Party above almost all of your favorite little post-franz emo crap bands. Have fun not knowing anything about music, and save your non thought-provoked “opinions” for your yourself.
For fuck’s sake, stop with the “They’re just Interpol/Strokes/Franz/Killers rip offs” bullshit. They’re good and entirely different. You’re not being cool or unique by tossing “Franz Ferdinand” into every post.
ahh, i see my “post-franz” comment has caused some fist-shaking and foot-stomping. cute. but let me point out that “post-franz” does not mean they sound exactly like franz. (although, hm, the yelping vocals, mostly tinny guitars, jerky song structures… no, it’s just me. never mind.) you cannot deny that franz – i’ll grant them this much – brought the whole gang of four-infused brood into the spotlight. these bands came on after franz like flannel-clad mooks did after nirvana and pearl jam.
the strokes and interpol actually are stylistically different from franz and bloc party, and from each other. they’re much less dancey. interpol is infinnitely darker than all of them. the only thing all of these bands do have in common is that the hype sells out shows here even before the first ep hits the 1,000 units mark.
as for the “post-franz emo crap” comment: emo was there way before franz ever put on their first purple designer cardigans. emo is “pre-franz.” oh, but i know nothing about music.
if it is totally killer drumming you are looking for than why not wank off to genesis or rush. neal peart and phil collins will totally love to watch. my post is sooo post/yourpost. weiners.
Ja daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa….
