Cyclist Hit by Car Last Night
A cyclist was hit by a livery car last night at the corner of Roebling and No. 11th. He was hurt pretty bad (lots of blood), but was moving and in the care of emergency personnel within minutes of the accident. A bystander told me he didn’t think the bicyclist stopped at the intersection and the driver just didn’t see him until impact. Bike was ruined, but luckily the dude made it out alive. Question 1) Was he wearing a helmet?
Question 2) Did his bikes have brakes or was he riding a fashionable fixie ala Flinstones?
And he had brakes too. I really thought this was gonna be a dude riding a fixie…

In my experience, you usually get hit from the side and fall to the side, so a helmet isn’t going to do you much good. Other news: you can stop a fixie. If the guy ran a red light or a stop sign in front of an oncoming limousine, neither a helmet not brakes would do him any good. If on the other hand it was the limo who ran the red light or stop sign…. the cops will say it was the bicyclist’s fault anyway.
Did he have bike lights? You really can’t see bikes without ‘em.

EVERYONE – especially if you are New to NYC…watch your shit when you get near an intersection. Livery drivers are notoriously impatient and poor drivers.
As much as I would like to blame fixies, its not a question of the type of bike, its usually the rider. I’ve seen smart people ride fixies, and I’ve seen a hell of lot more DUMB people riding fixies. STOP at lights. STOP at stop signs. You are not above the law, nor do you want to, especially when you are sharing the road with a car.
Question 1) Did somebody get hit by a car, are they hurt?
Question 2) Who hasn’t almost been hit by a car, bicycle or no pedestrian?
Question 3)Why do we tolerate the level of vehicle traffic we do if it so clearly endangers everybody, directly or indirectly?
In some very western places in the world, hitting a pedestrian leads to automatic temporary suspension of the drivers license, as often the only reason they hit someone is negligence, until they can prove otherwise. That might make any driver think twice before speeding up to 50mph to get through a light.
First of all….BICYCLISTS need to stop running through red light intersections without looking……every day, i come roaring down the street at a whopping 25 mph (under the speed limit) in my gas guzzling, noise making car….to find some monkey of a bicyclist rampaging through an intersection without even looking. NEWS: traffic rules apply to bicyclists as well.
Judging by this story…the bicyclist in this crash also didn’t look according to the witness.
And then i read some of you blaming the driver? HAHA! come on…get real.
Some vehicle drivers are not looking for bicyclists. They simply just don’t see them.
