I think most people wrongly categorize Hunter as a “drug writer.” In truth, his larger contribution was to the field of journalism. “Gonzo journalism” is fully his invention. His exaggerations, his humor, and his personalization of nonfiction events (such as the Nixon campaign) often provided more truth than straightforward, fully factual pieces written by his peers. From Hell’s Angels to The Curse of Lono, Hunter has been an enormous influence on me. He was one of a kind and will be missed.
I couldn’t have been more shocked by his suicide. A sad ending to an erratic and important existence. Hunter in recent days was a bold voice of opposition to American imperialism. Thanks for making me laugh through the years.

I really can’t believe Hunter would kill himself.
He was an avid gun collector, perhaps the gun went off by mistake. And of course there’s the CIA-cover up-he was framed for his own murder-thing, but that’s so obvious.
This is hearbreaking. Hell’s Angels is a wonderful book. In his writing he always seemed to celebrate life. A shocking end to an inspiring man.
Hunter S. Thompson was a huge early influence on my own writing. After acquainting myself with his work, I realized how many writers tried to immitate his style, and how few came anywhere near close to success. Thompson loved the power of language, and it showed. I never thought the maniac would die this way. Sad.
This just breaks my heart. This man has done amazing work and it is truly tragic to see him go. His “drug writer” title does not fit. He was an artist. A grand one, at that. May he rest peacefully.
Hunter, you stood as a monument in the library of every White Boy who never had the balls to try drugs himself. Your average-at-best writing, your dedication to self-destruction, finally self-fufilled when your balls dropped enough for you to put that gun in your mouth; congratulations.

Hunter doesn’t deserve even a modicum of attention from the great and influential mns. Waste not your enormous, dandruff-flaked talents on such a disreputable hack. Reserve them instead for bit-torrenting illegal copies of “Battlestar Galatica” and pleasuring yourself to screenshots of Michelle Malkin.

I never read any of Hunter’s books, and I didn’t really connect w/ the movie, but I liked his ESPN column and he was an exciting character who broke the mold. And God knows we need some broken molds.
