There was a great obituary of Doc written in yesterday’s (May 30) NY Times by William Grimes as well as an article in today’s Times (May 31) by Ry Cooder. I was fortunate enough to have seen Doc at Lincoln Center in 1997 with his grandson…it was interesting because while I was of course aware of his picking skills I had not been so aware of how funny he was and how at ease he was with the audience, something he was apparently quite well know for. “I began listening to Jimmie Rodgers recordings seriously & I figured ‘Hey, he must be doing that with one of them straight picks’”…
