DNA Info reported today on the complaints of Williamsburg residents on the recent influx of bridge-and-tunnel visitors:

Ever since he moved to North Williamsburg a few years ago, Michael Chandler has lost some of his favorite undiscovered bars to hordes of weekend “flipsters.”

“They’re poser hipsters. They come from the city or from New Jersey to come play hipster for the weekend,” said Chandler, 26, of the term. “There’s some weird touristy draw… All the cool bars that used to be not crowded are now crowded by weekenders.”

And

“The people who actually live on this block don’t go to these places. I don’t go to the Wythe, I don’t go to Output,” said Wythe Avenue resident Kate, 26, who declined to give her last name but said she’d lived on the stretch for the past two years and was dismayed by the changes.

While I get annoyed by the changing scene, it’s hard not to point out that there has been a Williamsburg for more than 2 years, and change isn’t something new to the neighborhood. The 20-somethings complaining about the changes might be closer to the recent ‘flipsters’ than they are to the Williamsburg residents who came a decade ago in search of community and cheap rent. I do admit it has gotten particularly bro-y as of late, but imagine if popped collars were still a thing? We would have articles about ‘popsters’ and life would be even worse. If I had more time I’d write some bad comparisons to the national immigration debate. What should we do? I hear Mitt Romney needs a job, we could elect him to local goverment and put up a high-tech fence from Kent to Bushwick. via DNA Info

Yep, the guy behind Lady Jay’s and Free Williamsburg favorite, Oak and Iron is opening an ice cream shop in Williamsburg:

We will be located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Kent Avenue, between North 3rd and North 4th Streets (just 3 blocks from Bedford Avenue, 2 blocks from Smorgasburg/Brooklyn Flea and a stone’s throw from the East River), and are slated to open Memorial Day weekend.

What Makes Our Ice Cream Different?

First and foremost, all of our ice cream will be made from scratch in our kitchen, which not too many ice cream shops can boast. Most ice cream shops that promise “homemade” actually throw flavors into a pre-made ice cream base. That’s not homemade! OddFellows Ice Cream Co. will be homemade. At the helm will be Chef Sam Mason (Empire Mayonnaise, wd~50, Tailor, Lady Jay’s). If you recognize the name, you know his culinary endeavors are delectably unconventional …now just wait until you taste his ice cream.

Chef Mason will pasteurize our base in-house. By making the ice cream in this manner, OddFellows will be able to deliver the highest quality and freshest product possible. Pasteurizing our base will also give us the freedom to concoct the most distinctive and scrumptious flavors. We will be able to individually infuse each batch’s mix to add depth and scope to each flavor. Nothing tastes better than homemade!

As for our ingredients, we source our milk, eggs, and cream from local farms and will, whenever possible, use in season, all natural ingredients. While our flavors will always be changing, we offer 8 to 10 ice cream flavors along with 2 to 4 sorbets daily. Our flavors will range from the odd and unconventional to inventive renditions of the classics. OddFellows will also have a full soda program (all homemade by Chef Mason), baked goods, candy, and other treats.

Today’s the last day to tak part in their Indiegogo Campaign. Find out more here.

Oh boy. Who’s ready for an Urban Outfitters Bar & Grill? The folks at Grubstreet noted a line a the bottom of the CB1 Brooklyn meeting agenda that said “Urban Outfitters, Inc, 98 North 6th Street (new, liquor, rest).”

From Grubstreet:

Though the retailer is apparently looking to score a full liquor license, it’s not immediately clear what form its restaurant will take. Some Urban Outfitters in other cities have in-house cafeteria-style cafés and sandwich shops, but signs point to this one being a little more upscale: Last year, Bloomberg reported that the corporation had merged shopping and eating at two of its Urban Outfitters Terrain stores, with restaurants serving menus of things like “$36 striped bass, $39 ribeye and a $19 vegetable plate.”

I was going to make a joke about a Guy Fieri or Toby Keith restaurant opening on Bedford but I’m too scared of it actually happening.

I’ve said it before and i’ll emphasize it again, lineups keep getting stronger and more enticing. Having dinner with a friend the other night brought into the conversation that it really is hard to stay indoors on a weekend lately. What with events like the rare performance of Magic Mountain High (Move D and Juju & Jordash!) and Fred P taking place at Output or the techno GODFATHER, Juan Atkins playing in Cameo Gallery’s intimate space, there’s too much to do and so much to see. Check out the five club nights featured below, where I’ve also included Disco and House heavy hitters Tornado Wallace and Detroit Swindle for a guaranteed good time on your day off.

Lewie Day of Melbourne, Australia makes a pit stop in NYC this Friday. Hosted by local disco and house promoters, Let’s play House Mr. Tornado Wallace is sure to smooth you over. His hit track “Rainbow Road” was released back in 2011 to critical acclaim on Instruments Of Rapture. Since then, Lewie has been hard at it touring all over the world as well as holding it down in his home turn with the reoccurring Animals Dancing parties.

Near death experiences bring folks together.
On a crazy Porchetta infused race from Rome to Foligno, Move D & Juju & Jordash first met. They decided that if they survived the curvy mountainous roads of Umbria they would form a band and release 17 LPs together, to symbolize the 17 KG of pork they ingested that fateful morning.

The three decided to plan a studio session at David’s home studio in Heidelberg. That session turned into a 4 day jam lockdown and a few months later a few more jam packed studio days were planned. Due to the groups improvisational inclinations, live improv sessions were the next step, and thru out 2011 several of those occurred, each one more enjoyable and more successful than the one before.

After a debut show at Cameo Gallery last December, Juan Atkins is back for another jam packed and mind blowing event. Widely known as The Godfather of Techno, Juan Atkins had founded the genre himself with two other Belleville High School classmates, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May. Since those times he’s defined the game with countless successful projects including Model 500 and Cybotron. Flash forward to 2012, you can find Juan Atkins touring the globe and still playing anywhere from Ibiza and Berlin to festivals like Movement and WMC.

Detroit Swindle have a clear vision on the music they produce and play. If you can’t nod your head to it, it’s probably not theirs and they probably won’t like it. Their productions are best described as contemporary interpretations of classic soul tracks with melodical grooves, jazzy chords and bumpy bass-lines. So in short, if Marvin Gaye would have made house music, they would have been his biggest fans.

For his follow-up to Reynard, Brooklyn restaurateur Andrew Tarlow created a casual all-day bar and cafe on a quiet stretch of West Street in Greenpoint. Achilles Heel serves coffee and pastries in the morning, and cocktails and charcuterie at night. Tarlow hopes to offer sandwiches, oysters, clam chowder, and other lightly prepared foods in the near future. All the goods are sourced from his other restaurants, and Achilles Heel also offers produce and fresh baked breads to take home. The beverage list includes beer, wine, and classic cocktails, plus a few drinks from Tarlow’s other restaurants.

The corner space existed as a neighborhood tavern from the early 1900s to the 1960s, but it has sat vacant for the last 40 years or so. Tarlow tells Eater that he got the idea for Achilles Heel when the landlord for the building approached him last year about opening something in the space. The restaurateur refurbished the bar from that old tavern and touched up the room, but it still has an old-world, worn-in feel. Achilles Heel is now open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., daily. Stay tuned for a tour of the bar early next week.
