Five Leaves Shut Down By Department of Health

This will curb those pesky lines. No word on why they closed but signs posted say they will reopen on Wednesday. Heard anything? Let us know.

    Could it be this?

Disgusting. Place should be closed down.

  3. Luiza says:

The Dept of Health enforces impossible standards on restaurants in order to generate income for the city. I work in restaurants – these are all relatively minor violations and it looks like they got FUCKED by an inspector who probably knows nothing about food and running restaurants anyway. Five Leaves is an upstanding establishment that has been serving the neighborhood for years. New York City is rat and mice infested, obviously. This doesn’t mean that they were unsanitary. If a DOH inspector went to your building, no matter how nice it is, I’m sure they would find evidence of some sort of infestation present or past. Its A CITY.

These sorts of departments are the enemy of the small business. The violation fines, in addition to the loss of business while closed and the damage to the reputation by all of the folks gawking at this ridiculous sign posted on their locked doors for several days – its unfair. Its not what New York City is about. And while I am grateful that there is, in theory, a department concerned with the health and hygiene of the citizens, this is not ultimately what the Dept of Health does.

Good. I detest this place. Why pay so much for mediocre food? May it never return, may the owners lose their shirts.

  5. Maggie says:

Just want to say, I have gotten wicked food poisoning from places that the Health Department chooses to leave open, and NEVER from Five Leaves or from my beloved Carmine’s Pizza. I don’t trust their evaluation process at all. We miss you Five Leaves!

  6. Dash Amfleck says:

Resentful Jerk, what an apt name. Besides the intolerable brunch lines, it’s a great place. Friendly servers and owners, much-better-than-average food at mostly very reasonable prices, and a nice overall atmosphere. See you at Lokal, Resentful Jerk.
