Frank Rich Nails it Today
From NY Times
Obama’s inaction on gay civil rights is striking. So is his utterly uncharacteristic inarticulateness. The Justice Department brief defending DOMA has spoken louder for this president than any of his own words on the subject. Chrisler noted that he has given major speeches on race, on abortion and to the Muslim world. ‚”People are waiting for that passionate speech from him on equal rights,” she said, ‚”and the time is now.”
Action would be even better. It’s a press clich√© that ‚”gay supporters” are disappointed with Obama, but we should all be. Gay Americans aren’t just another political special interest group. They are Americans who are actively discriminated against by federal laws. If the president is to properly honor the memory of Stonewall, he should get up to speed on what happened there 40 years ago, when courageous kids who had nothing, not even a public acknowledgment of their existence, stood up to make history happen in the least likely of places.

Are you implying that Obama is ignorant to what happened at Stonewall?
I’m gay, and honestly, I hope that for right now the president is spending his time on bigger issues.
You know, a few weeks ago when you brought this up, I told y’all to shut up and wait. But now I realize that this is the perfect time, actually, to put this through.
The Republicans are hurting right now, badly. Less than 25% of the country has a favorable view of them, and they essentially are powerless in Congress. There probably won’t be another time like this in another 25-30 years; at least using history as a guide.
It will only get harder from here on out. Health care will ALWAYS be difficult to pass through, regardless of political climate. Both Democrats and Republicans have had “campaign contributions” (legalized bribery) from the insurance companies, and will always continue to do so as long as our current electoral process is in place.
Sometimes you’ve got to just bite the pillow and go for it. This is the moment of opportunity, at the expense of absolutely no other political ambition.
Obama just promised everything under the sun that every liberal interest group would want in order to get elected. Common sense would have told anyone who was thinking instead of just voting for charisma and rhetoric that more than half of it wasn’t politically viable, feasible or possible.
Sorry but there are like 234532463252 more important things that homos right now. Erik is right.
