NY Mag says:

Plaster and dark wood walls stretch high to the sky at Gordon Bennett, dampening music and conversation. A slate floor and soft candlelight create a subterranean ambience akin to a monk’s cheese cave. Softly illuminated in the room’s center is a system of taps that spans half the length of the large bar; the spouts dispense liquid communion in the form of flowery Czech Staropramen and Belhaven Scottish Stout that’s milkshake-thick. The owners (one of whom runs the nearby Iona) have scrubbed the address clean of Vinas, a chic Latin American restaurant that recently closed, replacing seviche on the menu with pub grub like bangers and mash, fish and chips, and Cheddar toasties (Irish grilled-cheese sandwiches). Free pencil-thin breadsticks provide fuel for drinking long into the night.

Metromix says:

Pub & Grub Located in the heart of the Southside, this Old World bar is the perfect new spot to come together and meet old friends, make new ones & enjoy a cold pint & a hearty meal in a friendly neighborhood pub atmosphere.

NY Mag says:

At last: an Irish-like pub for people who generally hate Irish-like pubs, Iona’s sprightly young staff (and their accents) couldn’t be more appealing; they want you to pick your favorite wooden bench and stay a while. Inside this former candy store things are dim and spare, and don’t expect to see gimmicky leprechaun figures or posters bearing limericks. Instead, you’ll hear drum-and-bass mixes or classic rock–and not too loud, either. A little back alcove is perfect for late-night snogging, and the fact that the bar’s not filled with lecherous old Irishmen pawing every female in sight is a blessing. That tradition is being kept alive instead by the neighborhood hipster boys.

Citysearch says:

While the neighborhood’s lusty Stinger Club and Black Betty turn on the red lights, this pub (named for a Celtic island between Ireland and Scotland) proves a worthy complement. Wood-toned and gently lit, Iona reverberates with the Pogues and other alt-rockers as it fills up with conversational folk on the weekends. Although the bar does not serve hard liquor, Iona’s beer selection–largely Irish, Scottish and Belgian–is top-notch. Twenty varieties are on tap, including Guinness, Stella Artois and Fuller’s London Pride, and 30 in the bottle, such as Hoegaarden, Duvel and Schneiderweisse. In addition to beer, ale and bitters, the chalkboard menu offers four wines by the glass and snacks like potato chips and Mars bars. Irish-born bartender and part-owner Ailish Keating, who runs the pub with her friends Robert Hennah and John Crilly, has opened up the bar’s back garden–an attractive space with tree branches overhead.

NY Mag says:

The preserved “Shocks & Struts” sign outside this classy Greenpoint joint has become a neighborhood beacon. Narrower and darker than Enid’s (across the street), this former auto shop feels more like a refuge for Greenpointers who find an extensive beer list (including 16 on draft) more impressive than a full evening of listening to Badly Drawn Boy’s oeuvre. The back den of booths contains a Foosball table, a side room features impressive canvasses from local artists, and the gorgeous, amoeba-shaped copper bar in the center hosts old men of dubious sanity staring at post-collegiate girls deep into meditations on spirituality. Matchless needs more time to cement its identity, but an increase in bookings of local bands could call into question locals’ allegiance to the bar on the opposite corner. What’s more, the owner has already gotten in a street fight with high-schoolers on PCP, which in this neighborhood counts as an initiation ritual.

Citysearch says:

Housed in a former auto repair shop beside a fully functional motorcycle shop, this simple but artfully decorated and roomy bar brings in gearheads, wannabes and kids from the neighborhood. Working hard to lure patrons from wildly popular neighbor Enid’s, it ups the ante with darts, foosball, billiards and a wide selection of rotating beers on tap and in bottles–not to mention themed nights like Motocross races on Monday nights, Tuesday Trivia and Tacos and a monthly eating contest.
