Brooklyn contractor Charlie Verde was in construction for 30 years until he found inspiration for a new career as a restaurateur in a basement relic: a coal-burning oven that hadn’t been used for over a century. Verde opened Verde’s Coal Oven Pizza on Irving Ave. in Bushwick after a friend prompted him to restore the 104-year-old oven in the basement of his construction office. “I knew it was there and I sealed it up,” Verde said of the oven, which he found when he took over the property in 2002.
