Citing the inspiration of “dead English guys” like Duncan Browne and Alan Hull, Friedberger says, “I wanted the album to be extremely romantic-sounding, but instead of being about romantic love, it’s more about music, and that means a lot to me.” Most of the record, which is due out this summer via Merge, was worked out at live shows before Friedberger and her band recorded them over five days last fall at DFA’s West Village studio along with Last Summer producer– and onetime DFA in-house engineer– Eric Broucek. The results are beefier, sparklier, and both more heartbreaking and relatable compared to her debut.
