From New York Magazine
"Just as the original East Village Life Cafe was a haven for that neighborhood's early gentrifiers, Brooklyn's Life Cafe 983 caters to the new crop of young artists skulking about the otherwise industrial neighborhood of Bushwick,. Part cafe, part local bar, Life is an oasis on dismal Flushing Avenue that offers hearty, healthful meals that fit the budgets of the local creative set. The menu has slight Mexican influences and the mega burrito ($5.95), turkey club ($5.95) or Chili Q's (scrambled eggs with tortillas, cheese, salsa, rice and beans, $5.25) pack enough punch to fuel an entire day at the easel. The internet jukebox, rotating display of Brooklyn artists on the deep red walls, and live performances provide atmosphere without the straining self-consciousness of other hipster hangouts.

I hate to pile on, but I have to echo the negative reviews I've seen here... I have ordered from these people several times since moving to Bushwick and gone into the restaurant and never once had a good meal. Delivery takes a minimum of 45 minutes, even if you only live a few blocks away, and the food is of low quality and poorly prepared. Stale buns, fries that look like they were scraped off the bottom of a grease trap, burnt food, etc are all the norm, not the exception. I was excited about this place because there are so few options in the neighborhood, but until they step things up in the kitchen, don't bother.

this place is no good they only feel they can deliver to us occasionally, and refuse to go to your apartment, only the front of building

I have lived in the same neighborhood way before "life" was here and I have to say that the idea of a new restaurant opening that would deliver was a great thing.
Then we ate there. We still eat there, even though most time we cannot even finish our food because it is so bad. why do we go back?some how you fool yourself to think that its actually gonna be better or I think you forget how bad it really is.
The burgers are made with the worst meat I have ever tasted, they come dry and burnt or almost raw. I am not sure how the meat is so bad with the main boar's head factory less than one block away. Soggy buns forget about it they must have been dipped in water before being packed.
Order chicken fingers, you get chicken leather. Order a side salad, get wilted rotting salad with dressing that tastes like gasoline. Order steak sandwich, get beef jerky on white bread. Keep in mind all of these things are super expensive.
I cannot say that I have ordered take out where they do not forget something - condiments, sodas, utensils, fries etc. Delivery goes from good to horrible depending or what poor sap has the job. I have had people show up with not even a dollar in change - Like its cool I will give you an 8 dollar tip if you can just show me a dollar, just one, nope!
I would rather mcdonalds or burger king any day compared to this place, but sadly they do not deliver.
Now service if you actually go there is a whole drama in its own right. Regardless of how busy or empty the place is everything S L O W S __ D O W N.... make sure you have an hour to kill even if you are just getting a coffee.
I think they called the place "life" as a slap in the face.

I really love this place but there is one constant downfall. I enjoy the new staff, they're friendly and personable and their vegan options have really improved. But there is one woman (blonde blowout) who will give you dirty looks if you order any of the vegan options. You are absolutely putting her out and don't even try to modify your order or even order more than one drink?? This has happened numerous times and I have experienced neighboring tables having the same luck. It really ruins the whole Life Cafe experience. Boo for blowouts

the only reason why this place is still in buisness is because there are a handful of places to go in loft land. horrible food, overpriced. the LES restaurant must keep the decent cooks to themselves. thought I was safe with a 'tuna melt' but it was baked which made it dry, with nasty low grade tunafish, some cheese, someother weird sauce, and red peppers on top. thinking of that meal still makes me gag. do yourself a favor and stick to the beer.

dont stray far from the burgers and sandwiches which are pretty tasty. I tried the chicken fingers and they were the size of my pinky and looked like a 4 day old cat turd. and there were only 4. I thought someone was playing a joke on me. serioulsy they were like 5 or 6 bucks. the chicken wings were almost as band to.

this place is great. good food, kind and humble staff, decent beer selection... although i would like to see guiness on tap. they do have brooklyn beers on tap which almost makes up for it. the music that is played is good, and the volume wasn't so loud that we had to raise our voices while talking.
happy hour starts at 10pm, i'm sold! a definite recommendation for you bushwickers
