WE SAY: The best sushi in Williamsburg at a reasonable price. The interior is subtly decorated with soft colors and wood benches, providing a very enjoyable and Zen atmosphere. Korean dishes are equally satisfying. Try the ginger tofu or ginger chicken and you will not be disappointed. Flavors are refreshing in their subtlety, as they should be. If you want Thaigo to PlanEat Thai. If you want sushi or Korean- Miyako is the place to be. On the downside: the crab is that fake crap.
From Village Voice
"... while the sushi is not on par with the very best places, it's perfectly adequate. Pride of the house is the Williamsburg roll--an outsize California topped with avocado, eel, and a dark sauce dotted with sesame seeds. The menu is rounded out with noodles, teriyakis, tofu entrees, and Korean dishes like bi-bim-bap, an assemblage of exotic vegetables and beef over rice (pour the broth over the top and vigorously stir)."
FROM NY MAG
Luckily, this eager-to-please neighborhood Japanese/Korean hasn't caught the annoying Williamsburg trendster bug, despite its prime N. 6th and Berry location and proximity to hipper-than-thou Asian joints like the decked out SEA. In line with its humble goal--to feed its patrons cheaply and well--the interior is no frills, with a small sushi bar seating three and decorative flourishes that peak with strands of white Christmas lights. You don’t have to search to find something affordable on the menu. Tofu and vegetables simmered in bonito stock weigh in at a mere $7.95, udon or soba noodles with beef and vegetables start at just $8.95. The bottom line: The food (especially the sushi) is always fresh, the wait staff will refill your green tea with a smile, and a Hershey's kiss comes with your bill. Now that's sweet!

Love Miyako. Asked about that overcharge thing. Told that's a tip authorization that goes back to your card automatically when no time is entered. So far, haven't had a problem.

BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU PAY AT MIYAKO!!
3 days ago I order food to take out at Miyako. I paid with my credit card, and I didn't fill out the tip line. Today I have just seen in my bank account that they overcharged me $6.
20% for no service and without the card's owner consent? That's a theft.

I have been going to Miyako for almost a year now and I will admit that service is very slow at times. But I keep going back because the food is just so good. The sushi is not the most exotic collection of fish but it is consistently the freshest. (Hint about fish, you cant buy fresh fish on the weekends. Miyako is closed on Sun. Which means they don't go into the third day of selling old fish.) And I also know this because there was this one week when my stove was broken and i couldn't cook at home. So I went to Miyako's like 4 day's in a row. (sad I know) but anyway I always sit at the bar and some time between my meal I hear one of the wait staff pick up the phone and call out "fish" and the chef always goes back to order something. 4 out of 4 is good enough for me to know their not freezing fish like some other places. Im not saying its the best place in williamsburg, only because the service can be annoyingly slow at times but it is definitely in my top 3 for quality and price.

okay sushi good korean food. this place has okay sushi and japanese food, but it sure does have excellent authentic korean food. Skip dokebi's and come here for korean unless you want bbq. but dokebi's bbq is subpar anyways. the vibe of miyako is intimate and laid back, the window seats are also excellent for people watching!

the tofu bi bim bop was excellent and service was very good. a huge plus, they have many vegetarian options.

two words: food poisoning.
Ate there on April 18, 2007.
Had eel, dragon rolls, spicy tuna. Looked kinda rotten. We both got TERRIBLE food poisoning and it's the only meal we had together that week so there's no other possibility.

I hate to confess this (because I love Miyako), but this evening I had an absolutely horrible experience at Miyako which I feel I should relate to my fellow piscivores.
I should preface this by saying that I am regular at Miyako. I eat in the restaurant itself about once a week, and order take out a few times a month. The fish is excellent - I can't find better tasting sushi in Williamsburg.
This evening, however, I ordered the Volcano roll, which I've had a couple of times and which I felt confident about. Surprisingly, it tasted quite... well, rotten. A bit like dog food to be more exact. Being as a polite as I could possibly manage, I informed our waiter that the Volcano roll didn't taste like it should, and that it was really quite inedible. I felt out the part about it stinking up our table.
Now, call me an asshole, but usually whenever I hear a patron make this kind of complaint, the waiter at least offers to remove the dish from the bill.
Not tonight.
I ended up paying almost ten dollars for rotten fish! Believe me, I wasn't imagining the foul taste just so that I could cause a scene - far from it. I hate making complaints in restraunts, and I feel that people who enjoy it should be committed. Anyway, I took the price of the roll out of tip and walked out feeling quite nauseas. (I admit this was a nastly thing to do, but I was pissed at the time... and possibly a little drunk. The hot sake is great and cheap!)
I don't know exactly how I feel about Miyako after this experience. It's true that the service is terrible, but the fish is (usually) increduble. I've had the not-so-impressive dish from time to time (this evening's house salad was soggy and boring), but generally I've been very happy. The moral of this story: sniff before you bite!

Miyako is a place where I know what to expect. If you would like a change from sushi, try the hot pot with beef or tofu - it is a delicious combination of beef, rice, egg, veggies and chili. Also, the man do bok kee with pork is a carmelized alternative to the usual steamed dumplings. Perfect comfort food when the weather turns cold.
As far as service, it can be slow, but the staff is welcoming and will offer suggestions if you are interested in trying something new.

i went there last thursday. yes, service sucks. waited over 30 mins also. my gf ordered miso chicken and i ordered terriyaki chicken. after 30 mins, we get the same steamed chicken. hers poured with miso on top. mine with terriyaki sauce on top. the terriyaki chicken in any food court would beat this hands down. maybe the management changed after the renovation.

i agree - everyone needs to chill out. are people drinking/doing drugs while writing reviews on this site? there has got to be better things to do while doing that....
i ate here recently and while the food was pretty good - the service was TERRIBLE. we waited for at least 30 minutes for sushi.

all i gotta say is, that when my friend ordered inari, she was served a roll with tofu skin inside. nuff said.

wtf. I just want a restaurant review, not a stupid online war that somehow turned racial.
anyway...skipping past all of that nonsense. I happen to LIKE miyako. I don't LOVE it. but it's good. and damn I really like their spicy snowcrab roll. mmm.
I have noticed that everytime i've been there I've had to wait at least 5-10 min, sometimes more for a table. but I have never had a problem with that. maybe cause it's freegin FOOD, people. FOOD. just relax and eat it dammit. whew.

the sushi at this restaurant is definately not the best in williamsburg.
less than one block down on 6th and bedford is a sushi restaraunt with much better food all around. it isn't trendy though.

Who cares? I think the point about a clean establishment is valid. When I visited Japan, you could eat off the floors in the bathrooms it was so clean. They are a clean people, whatever the history books say.Sushi can be deadly if it's not done right. Screw the history lesson. Gimme some clean fish in a clean place...That korean chick is bonkers!
Posted by: Fishman | January 3, 2006 05:52 AM
wow. you guys both sound pathetic. the korean sushi lover and the yellow fevered silverjay. as for the japanese food gourmet, you are an idiot. you're comments smack of racial undertones. just because i have had bad ramen at every japanese ramen place in the city, doesn't mean the japanese know nothing about ramen or take pride establishment. they giv e it a try and sometimes they don't do a good job. so what?... you're stupid japanese pride makes your whole culture sound like a bunch of too short and too stiff copy cat, inferiority complexed savages who imperialize every culture they can get their vicious hands on... dumb, failed imperial ethnocentric idiots.

Personally, I have to disagree with gushing cunts' post from the 3rd. While "cum female gushing hardcore" may be nice, I found a striking absence of it at Miyako. But who knows, maybe it would improve the sushi.

I just ate here a week or two ago and thought it was great! They have renovated the whole restaurant which looks real nice. My friend and I had korean dishes and sushi and enjoyed them both. I do recall when the place was a little shifty looking but it seems to be A-OK now.

Wow, never heard such heated reviewing. I can't agree with the overpriced claims, as I'm pretty sure the place is less expensive then either wasabi or samauri in the neighborhood. And, overall, I enjoy the place. Everything I've had there tasted fresh and delicious. Just tried a korean entree there the other day and enjoyed it, though I would say it was a little overspiced.

That's a pretty aggressive response to a restaurant review. Especially calling someone a "dumbass" in a personal email. Nevertheless, 12 years in Japan, a Japanese wife, and Japanese in-laws is usually enough qualifications to make recommendations to my Japanese friends and business associates and have them come back for more...It's a pretty pathetic sign when a "Japanese" restaurant is called out for it's Korean dish. Must be good then. But skip the sushi. Dirty interior, goofy red lanterns, been around a long time? Plenty of other choices in the neighborhood お寿司屋の中に虫がいる?気持ち悪い!
"Just because you went for a 3 day business trip to Japan, does that make an expert on japanese dining? Maybe if you were Japanese or even live there for maybe (more than 10 days)
Get your facts straight. If you going to say anytbing abouta restaurant and culture stop reading those TOURIST guides and talkin as if you know. Well I hope you dont come to my restaurant (Yakitory osho) and tell me I need red lights for my yakitory grills

For the August3 and May31 posters:
You do not know Korean nor Japanese food. I am Korean and have worked for a Japanese restaurant(Japanese owner)for more than 9yrs. How many Japanese/Korean or even any restaurant have you worked at?
People like you talk about restaurants being expensive, fake, dirty, but Miyako is the cheapest Japanese restaurant that I know of with quality. HUMMMm~~~I wonder why there is a line pretty much everyday. Could it be the food is good? Maybe.
For Sonomi:Since your so familiar with how a Korean dish should taste, Im sure you know Miyako's BI BI BaP was rated #1 in NE by the #1 selling Korean Newpaper. So get the facts straight before insulting great food of not your nationality.

I lived in Japan a long time and totally agree with the May 31st posting. Most annoying thing about this place when we went was the stubborn helicopter sized fly zipping about the dining room. Neighborhood places in Japan usually take pride in hanging a sign that says sushi. Apparently Koreans don't. BTW, just a cultural thing to toss out at the next happy hour- a red lantern in Japan is a sign of a small taverna, usually yaki tori or maybe ramen, but never proper cuisine. Sushi and red lanterns- nay, they don't mix. Had to confirm it first hand though....

Knowing the owner is Korean, I went to try Korean food here at Miyako, the food was horrible. Especially Tofu chige tasted like Miso soup! This is a fake!!! They must thinking Foreigner won't know the taste! At sushi counter, the sanitery seems not too good. Dust all over the interior, you need a renovation and remember to keep clean sanitation when you hung a sign it says SUSHI or JAPANESE RESTAURANT! Yes I am gourment Japanese. I can say this! I was very disappointed with their fake food, thinking it's OK all these time!

Miyako deserves respect for being there the longest, i personally prefer wasabi.

Sushi is pretty good, but not really worth the price. If you are dying for sushi in the area, it is the best in the neighborhood, but there is much better sushi for better prices on Manhattan at the first two stops on the L.

The sushi is fine, altough a bit pricey for the quality. Takeout takes a dogs age however. Expect a 45 min wait if ordering sushi to go.
