NEW YORK MAG SAYS: "The room isn't handsome, street-slick, or even particularly welcoming. It recalls the kind of establishment that sports a banner running from beam to beam every year proclaiming !oktoberfest! The patrons may have come here straight from their booths at the Javits Center. The staff goes about its nonstop business with cordial if mechanical efficiency, serving onion-and-tomato salads, creamed spinach, and pasty fried potatoes. So why is it always more crowded than Toys 'R' Us on the weekend before Christmas? Because there are few gastronomic sensations that confirm the good life better than a hunk of a spectacular steak. And Peter Luger can broil and deliver one magnificently aged and marbleized two-finger-thick porterhouse after another with the unfailing certainty of Dustin Hoffman adenoidally reciting baseball scores. So don't even ask for a menu. Get big. Eat beef. Recommended Dishes: Steak for two, $77; steak for three, $115.50; steak for four, $154; creamed spinach, $7.50; sizzling canadian bacon, $2.50/slice."
From City Search:
"Expect no frills at this working man's steakhouse, a local landmark since 1887. Diners don't even get menus unless they ask; waiters are tersely matter-of-fact. The dining rooms, with their exposed beams and worn wooden furniture, are far brighter than they ought to be. But don't complain too loudly: Luger's fiercely loyal regulars will defend the place as passionately as they would their own mothers. Everyone orders the hand-picked, dry-aged porterhouse steaks and the butter-sluiced slabs arrive on lava-hot platters. German fried potatoes and creamed spinach are fine sides; starters include a salad of thick-cut tomatoes and onions, and crispy double-thick bacon. Desserts--chocolate mousse pie, New York cheesecake--are satisfying in an old-fashioned way and come with a giant bowl of whipped cream to pile on top."
From Zagat:
"Nothing compares" to this "grand high poobah" of steakdom, a Williamsburg "temple of testosterone" (and "shrine to Dr. Atkins") that's voted the top chop shop in this Survey for the 20th year running; look for a "glorious porterhouse" that you can "cut with a butter knife", "cantankerous" waiters right "out of central casting", German "beer-hall" decor and a "cash-only" policy; in sum, it's "right on the money" when it comes to the "best steak in the known world."
Frommers Review:
If you love steak, then book a table here and hop a cab to Williamsburg. Expect loads of attitude and nothing in the way of decor or atmosphere (beer hall is the theme) -- but this century-old institution is porterhouse heaven. The first-rate cuts -- the only ones this 114-year-old institution serves -- are dry-aged on the premises and come off the grill dripping with fat and butter, crusty on the outside and tender pink within. It's the best steak in the five boroughs, bar none. Nonbelievers can order sole or lamb chops, but don't bother if you're not coming for the cow. The $5.95 Peter Luger burger is a little-known treasure. As sides go, the German fried potatoes are crisp and delicious, and the creamed spinach is everything it should be. Bring wads of cash because this place is expensive, but doesn't take credit cards (other than their own house account).
From NY Times
"Peter Luger serves no lobsters, takes no major credit cards and lacks a great wine list. Service, though professional and often humorous, can sometimes be brusque. With its bare wooden tables, the place looks like a beer hall that has not changed since it opened in 1887. So why is it packed night and day, seven days a week? Simple: Peter Luger has the best steak in New York City. The family that runs the restaurant buys fresh shortloins and dry-ages them on the premises. An occasional diner will choose the thick and powerfully delicious lamb chops, or the fine salmon. French fries are terrific -- hot and crisp with a powerful potato flavor. The restaurant does well by desserts, serving a fine, rich cheesecake and a fluffy chocolate mousse cake. A little whipped cream? Why not? What's a little more cholesterol at this point?"

Comments
SO OVERRATED. Yes, the steak is delicious, but i've had better, especially for the price. Staff is generally cool though, the rest of the food, well, not so memorable. This is a place where out of towners want you to take them, make sure you have fat wallet and a healthy blood lust.

renewed my love affair with NYC in 2005 after 40yrs and returned in 2006.Came to your GREAT steak house on both visits.Just the best steaks in the world.Super service had the same waiter,by chance, both visits;Steve, explained we were PL virgins so perhaps he was gentle with us!Also love the tomato and onion starter.Cannot believe the unfavorable reviews you are brave enough to show, but why should you worry, you know they're wrong!See you in 2007.

I've been there twice, and my stomach has never been the same since - and I'd never had a weak stomach before eating there. The steak was good, but 3+ years of indigestion make it less than worthwhile. If you're not used to grass-fed, aged beef, you'd best skip it.

Tried to go there for lunch and was scared away by the rudest and most inattentive hostess ever.
Thank god Broadway Diner makes great burgers too...
