WE SAY: Plan-Eat Thailand moved in August 1999 from a tiny, homey space on Bedford Avenue to its current location in a cavernous industrial space that wraps around the corner of N.7 and Berry Streets. The restaurant has two decidedly different entrances: the N.7th Street entrance opens into a dark and stylish bar backed by a sculpture made of glowing green bottles. A rowboat that doubles as a fountain and wishing well, suspended from the ceiling in the entrance to N.7th-side dining room, beckons visitors inside. From the Berry Street entrance, where 20-foot-high windows face out onto the street, a bright and spacious sake bar opposes a busy sushi bar. Between the two are dozens of tables, and the tall, stark walls are decorated with a rotating exhibition of large-scale paintings by local artists. Aside from the architectural splendor of the place and it's popularity among the stylish yuppie set that hops over from Manhattan, the food is great and the price is right. The extensive menu, which generally stays under $10, is actually two menus: a full Japanese menu and a full Thai menu. The sushi is fresh, with wonderful tuna, salmon, and squid. The noodles, from Pad Thai to cold sesame--mild or spicy, are perfectly flavored and the servings are copious. Especially delicious dishes include the delectable green papaya salad, the fresh spring rolls, or, the filet mignon or lobster tails that are served hot off the hibachi grill. The service can be slow, but some gentle prodding makes a difference.
From Village Voice
"A leaky rowboat drips water from on high as a fountain and the youngish crowd is given to black attire, multiple piercings, and intense conversation. There are dual menus. On one, options are Thai specialties like a satay simply called grilled beef on a skewer, a green papaya salad platter and a vegetarian pad Thai. On the other, Japan takes over. Ther'e s an assortment of sushi and most of the usual culinary suspects show up. Nocturnal Brooklynites who appreciate the late hours love it, but it's fine at lunch too."
From City Search:
"Stylish warehouse digs and tasty Thai and sushi keep the crowds happy at this Williamsburg mainstay. Dark, loud and adorned with arty objects, this huge industrial space is packed every night. While the three frenetic kitchens seem to work according to the motto "serving Williamsburg one plate at a time" (with less-than-enthusiastic servers), all is forgiven when the astonishingly low check comes. Most restaurants with more than 250 items on the regular menu don't do any of them particularly well. Neither do most restaurants that try tackling Thai, sushi and hibachi. But with a bite of tangy tamarind-fried squid, and a sip of steaming miso, you'll find Planet Thailand a welcome exception to both of these rules. Consistently satisfying versions of Thai staples like pad Thai and curry dishes arrive in generous portions. The sushi is fresh and basic, but other Japanese dishes, like wasabi shumai and seafood udon, fill the creative gap."
From NY Times
"This unusual, much-applauded Thai restaurant has its ups and downs, but more often than not serves spicy, meticulously prepared dishes like ground pork salad, sauteed bean curd and striped bass with crunchy greens. Plan Eat Thailand is often crowded and loud."

Ok look out when ordering, the prices have changed and it will throw you off. A bit upsetting when a 20 dollar order has somehow become a 35-40 dollar order. Other than that, its...meh.

Where else can you get sushi, a thai iced, and surf n' turf in 1 place?
The place is affordable but i wouldn't travel to eat here.
They take well to instruction as i'm a picky eater and can be difficult.
Most of my experience has been through delivery but i haven't had any issues with the dozen or so times i've eaten there.

I think the food is super yummy!!!! I tried the peanut curry last night for the first time and it was delicious!!! So i got to go again tonight and got the chicken friend rice and teriyaki chicken!! I love it!! I haven't eaten at the actual restaurant yet but I'm sure its just as good!!!

service was horrible, brought us the wrong food twice and had an attitude when we told them we didnt order that . bathrooms were filthy, saw a roach near our table too...why do people hype this shit hole so much ?

this place sickens me, the last time i ate there i got dethly sick, i know it was the food, i should have brought it somewhere to be tested..and the dumbass waiters that cant even speak english, the only time they come to you is with the check, even if you didnt ask for it..im sure they substitute other things like cat and pigeon for the chicken , they should be shipped back to there country in a dumpster with all the left overs ! they are filthy , filthy , filthy !!
Posted by: Rob | August 10, 2008 05:47 AM
i heard that they were using squirrel and pigeon as chicken ! my pigeon pad tai was horrible ! i need to throw up , i wanna sue them !!!

every other month Planet Thailand and SEA seem to swap staff -- at any given time one of them serves food that is far too oily and seems chock full of MSG, while the other makes food that tastes good.
I'm not going to say that one is better than they other - depending on when you go, one will be amazing, the other will suck, and then they switch.
It's been like that for years, and will be like that for years to come.

Closed again due to health violations - You would have throught they learned their lesson the first time.

Service was alright once we were actually seated, but my peanut curry was uninspired and chock full of the mushiest most disgustingly overcooked vegetables I have ever had in a restaurant.

planet thai is officially off my recommendation list after my dinner there last night. for 5 people, our dinner lasted 3.5 hours. and it wasn't because we were lingering. they continued to forgot orders, foul up drink orders, and then brought cold food. not luke warm, but cold.
even after we told them how much they had been screwing up, they failed to actually try harder and continued to make mistakes. it was beyond acceptable and i will not recommend this place for it's high price for medium value food, horrible service, and inexperience in general.
i guess if you want thai in the burg, you're better off making it yourself these days.

Think twice before eating at Planet Thailand!!!!! I would be shocked if someone could prove their sushi is not TOPS Supermarket grade at best. The salmon is so fatty, my dog had trouble eating it. There is not one inventive roll on the menu. The thai food is fair but there is better in the neighborhood, even Noodle Studio (yes, it's a meth lab) might be better. And the service, oh, DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" If you're in need of something, don't bother looking around, there's no one in sight. If you don't need a thing, hold onto your plate, at least three people will try to take it. Only try take-out if you speak another language.....LOUDLY!!! Why they would choose to put the woman taking take-out orders in the middle of the LOUDEST restaurant is beyond me. Alas, maybe that's better in the long run because she may not hear your salmon sushi order. For sushi, try Miyako!!!!! for Thai, try Chai!!!!!!!!!

When we first entered Planet Thai, we were greeted with a giant paddle boat fountain with holes drilled into its exterior, an impressive sight. Little did we know it was a warning that this ship was sinking and sinking SLOWLY.
We chose Planet Thai for its great reputation. But with every great expectation comes great disappointment!
I find it fascinating that the Japanese menu takes up two thirds of the menu while the thai options were VERY limited. Tons of Hibachi but not even a sign of very traditional Green Curry.
I ordered the Basil Squid. The squid was cooked perfectly but it was accompanied by the most soggy brown rice ever! It was just horribly prepared!
Most of all, for the amount you were paying in a Thai restaurant outside of manhattan, the presentation of the dishes were BLAH. A couple of shreds of carrot and a dash of stripe of dijon mustard (yes, just plain ole Grey Poupon) may suffice for some..... Although there was a high stacked, very appealing salad being served to a neighboring table (Japanese option, no doubt), but there was not a waitress/busboy/manager to be found to ask what it was to order.
If you're going to planet thai, be prepared at the end of the meal to remain hungry, thirsty (no water service, can't order a drink) and you can forget about dessert. You're lucky if you get your bill!
The most disappointing 2 HOUR LUNCH ever...

I've been a Planet Tai regular on and off since the place moved from Grand St. to it's current location. The food is okay, the service is okay, I've never had a problem except when it really crowded there and had to wait about 30 minutes to get seated.
If you're worried about that, check it out for lunch or on a Sunday, that makes all the difference.
I can't believe people are so bitter. Why don't you all just stay home and cook? Sheesh.. Talk about anal retentive NY'kers ...

Why do i feel like these comments are posted by competition of planet thai and answered by management of planet thai? i dunno, i can't trust computers anymore. i'll see what the deal is when my roommate gets back with the food. reviews and reviewers kinda blow..
Posted by: blow joe | July 3, 2007 03:35 AM
The food was and is still awesome. However service has indeed gone to shit because every Social loser from the midwest re-located to this neighborhood to form the hipster army and now the place is always so crowded that shit happens

Service here is FANTASTIC!!

i hate this place. ive lived in the neighborhood for 5 years and gone to many a great thai/japananese rest.
i went only once to this hole and it was one of the worst dining experiences ive had in the area. the oysters were rotten, and the sushi was low-grade and barely edible.
i went to complain to a man at the counter about the food & service as i left and he proceeded to blow his snot into a kleenex and shrug saying nothing and looking resentful, as he put a delivery order in a bag w/out washing his hands. yuck. i can't beleive people think this place is "cool." they must be from out of town...
Posted by: shay | November 22, 2006 11:15 PM
SO what Williamsburg places do you experts out there recommend (fusion, thai)? I personally enjoyed the Hibachi spcecial. Thats it for that PT though. Cant go back to a place that was shut down by the city.
Posted by: Dr. C | September 16, 2006 12:30 AM
not to be a food snob, but i went to culinary school--and planet thai sucks. not going into a whole argument but yeah, the flavors are simple and the ingredients are weak. sea isn't the best but better than most, and def better than planet thai.
Posted by: your mom2 | September 15, 2006 02:54 AM
meh...i dont see the big deal with this place.
granted, i've been there a million times, but i'm not really sure why. i never leave feeling like i've had a great meal, just average.
last time i was there, i ordered a tuna roll, and they had obviously used a cheaper cut of tuna (not sushi quality, kinda concerning when youre eating it), as there were bones and sinew running through it. i told the waitress and she insisted that that was what a tuna roll was, and thats how "we eat sushi"
right. thanks for the ridiculous sushi "lesson," but i dont think i'll be returning. the shitty service and annoying crowd isn't worth the mediocre food.

I only ate Shrimp-soba for last few years on weekends and now it's not edible... I miss it
Posted by: jake | September 4, 2006 03:21 PM
Its not the best Thai food in NYC, but easily the best in Williamburg ( some places in greenpoint are better, if you want to walk 15 minutes).
It's cheaper and uses less oil than SEA, not to mention there's never a wait - while almost always a 20minute wait at SEA.
The waitresses at Chai are rude beyond belief and can never get a phone order right.
The place that opened up on bedford is just awful. You can't make pad thai with spaghetti.
Thai Cafe and Amarin in Greenpoint are both better, but they're in Greenpoint-- so i don't get why other people brought it up.

the review by this site puts all of their reviews into question..this place is horrible. poor version of thai food.
Posted by: live around he corner | June 9, 2006 02:21 AM
PT is some sort of McThai for the yuppie set. Go to Cheers or Fake Orchid (in the E Vil) for real Thai.
Posted by: nolls | June 8, 2006 04:10 PM
thai food here like the ukraine, WEAK. flavors are pathetic. the interior, not the food is the emphasis here.
Sea is much better, or for even better thai, go for a place called Cheers--theyre on this site.

I've managed to save up roughly $75601 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
Posted by: Courtney Gidts | May 19, 2006 06:20 PM
yeah, check out the new york health department website. planet thai got an 88 on their inspection, no wonder they were shut down. anything above a 28 is a fail. maybe they will reopen with sanitary conditions and better quality of food.
Posted by: tiffany | May 5, 2006 06:34 PM
hey come on guys, the food MAY SUCK, but look at it, IT IS O SO FUCKING COOL INSIDE.
You people of williamsburg have no intent to eat any decent food at all. Just as long as you can see and be seen right? individuals? yeah right.
Posted by: sir, eats real food | May 5, 2006 04:45 AM
i wsh they woulod shut this place down perm. ew.
Posted by: meowella | April 29, 2006 03:13 PM
AVERAGE. Not as good as Sea. Curry is run of the mill.
Posted by: ryan | April 26, 2006 04:55 AM
Sorry, but those who say the thai is mediocre are crazy. BY FAR better than it's thai cafeteria counterpart, and the best variation of Pad Thai I've found.
Granted, the service kind of blows, but the food is delicious and cheap. The soups are great too. Bypass Sea and don't even think about Tai Thai.
Posted by: jon | April 23, 2006 01:02 AM
decent for pick up, but seriously. do something about the NOISE in this place. It's unbearable how loud it is at Planet Thai. Let's soundproof this cinderblock warehouse...THE DIN!!! And hey, time to grow up and become a real "grown up" restaurant and start accepting credit cards already. This $2.00 to use the ATM garbage is getting really tired. Your restaurant takes up half a block. I think you can suck up whatever charges credit card companies might have to make your customers not have to jump through hoops to pay for their meal. AND locals should AVOID WEEKENDS HERE The place becomes overrun with Testosteroids and Bimbots.

Oh my GOD this place isn't just overrated - it's downright AWFUL. Dined there last night - crab cake appetizer was rubbery and tasted like sarimi - like eating deep-fried catfood. The beef with peanut curry was the most gristle-y, poor quality meat I've ever encountered, and I include chinese restaurants in that estimation. Thought I'd give them a second chance and had their pad thai delivered tonight. Come on - how hard is it to get this dish right? Do they use Jiffy crunchy peanut butter in it? The flavor was just plain lame, and a few of the chicken pieces tasted funky - like they sat out on the counter too long. Don't believe the hype. This place sucks.

i loved it. nice modern decor, good atmosphere, music playing in the background and fanatastic thai food at a great price. i went on a sunday evening and got a table straight away and the service was prompt. the best thai food i have had in a long time. i ordered the habichan chicken and shrimp with fried rice and it was delicious and the portions were generous. i will be going back for more.i don't know what everyone is complaining about. i hate quiet, overpiced, snobby restaurants. give me nice food and some atmosphere. maybe they went on a bad night.

I love Planet Thailand! The food is great and the atmosphere is hip but good luck getting a table if you go on a weekend night.
Posted by: mars | September 20, 2005 08:19 PM
The waiters are rude and the place is unsanitary.
After noticing the spit on my udon I was forced to throw it at the rude waiter's face and punch him in the cheek.
It was a unique dining experience.
Thanks free williammsburg for recommending this dynamite restaurant.

I've dined at this establishment twice. The first time the food (4 dishes and tried a bit of my friends' food too) was definitely subpar. The atmosphere nice, but the Thai food was worse than my own attempts at Thai cooking. The service was horrible.
I decided to try the place again. Again, bad service, bad food, nice atmosphere & music. My friends nor I will ever dine at this restaurant again.
I can't possibly understand why it's always so busy. Besides the music and interior decor, there's nothing appealing about the place.

THE WORST service in NYC. The best price for OK Sushi rolls. Not a good place for a date: It is extremely loud and uncomfortable. You might feel like killing the wait staff after you waited for 2 hours to get your order and it is the wrong one...
Posted by: Maly Blomberg | April 20, 2005 02:09 AM
Crowded and loud indeed. Why do people flock? Mediocre at best thai food and an extensive beer selection? No thanks.
