WE SAY: If you want to take out-of-towners to a restaurant and show them what a cool neighborhood you live in, take them to planet Thai. If you want great Thai food, go to Cheers. Worthy of it's name, Cheers' classically tasteful interior of dark wood and navy blue booths is the most comfortable and low-key Thai restaurant among many around town, and in the summer months, the garden at cheers is nothing short of a dream.
The menu is short and simple with all of the classic Thai dishes done very well. Pad Thai, summer rolls, and curries are exceptional and the famous Thai hot and sour soup, tomyum goong, is second to none. For four straight Sundays, I went to cheers and had the pineapple shrimp curry served in a clay pot and loved it every time. Averaging about $8 per entree, Cheers is a pleasure that can be afforded again and again; and they deliver.
From Village Voice
"This unfortunately named cafe takes over from the mothership of Moondog, the local ice cream chain that overextended itself and then vanished overnight. The current occupant offers Siamese with a few Malaysian twists, and already bohos fleeing the tourist crush of Planeat Thailand have filtered in. Appetizers of steamed mussels and mee grob, a sweet salad of fried noodles and shrimp, are excellent, especially if you spoon on the homemade hot sauce that's a dead ringer for Hong Kong XO. And while the pad thai flounders, the green and red curries are delicious, served with plenty of rice-soaking gravy."
From New York Magazine
"Consider this little spot when you’re in need of consistent Thai comfort food. The menu features the requisite pad Thai, spring rolls, tom kha kai soup, and curry dishes, all tailored for an American palate and perfect for a quick, cheap dinner. They work hard to create a welcoming atmosphere with low lighting, postcards of Thailand, candles on tables with fresh orchid blossoms, and oddly, Van Gogh prints. But the main attraction for eating in-house, rather than doing take-out is the pleasant backyard patio in warmer weather. –-Noria Morales"
From About.com
Consistently comforting with its sunny staff and reliable classic Thai menu, Cheers may not be the best known Thai restaurant in Williamsburg, but its the choice among locals. All your Thai favorites are here including tasty curries, summer rolls, spicy soups and the American dish of choice, pad thai. The interior is understated and comfortable, though the draw to eat in is the lovely garden seating that is available during better weather. Delivery is free in the neighborhood and with entrees averaging in the $8 range, you could afford to order in often.

This is the best Thai in Williamsburg. Just don't sit in the backyard in the late summer. The fountain back there is a beacon for mosquitos.

I used to go to Cheers all the time, and usually would get their chicken with basil sauce; it was very tasty. However, the last time I went, which was a couple of weeks ago, the portion was miniscule. Indeed, it was even served in a smaller container. They need to quit being chintzy. Also, the food is greasier. Get to work, guys, because the courtyard is charming.

We used to LOVE this place and ordered from there at LEAST once a week. We were especially happy because we're kinda far away (other side of mccarren park) and they still delivered to us with virtually no fuss. Occasionally they woudl refuse because of the weather (snow etc) which is understandable, but the food has always been good. The other night, we ordered from them and the food NEVER CAME AND THEY STOPPED PICKING UP THE PHONE. The food just never came. We're not ordering from there again. Erb is sweeter and more modern, but at least they actually come to our house with food when we ask them to. Cheers, where has the magic gone?

Cheers is one of my favorite thai resturants.
They have such good vegetarian choices, I'm crazy for the eggplants with basil.
The menu is fresh and inventive with things like the Tao hue hor which I have never seen anywhere else.
My only complaint is that I find some of the sauses are somtimes too salty. I like the relaxed cozy atmosphere, the service is genuine, the friendly wait staff is so nice, and the mood is intimate and romantic. The backyard is fun in the summer. Cheers an Lilly are unique resturants and their menus and atmospheres are quite different, I like them both for different reasons so I don't recommend choosing one over the other.

whenever i get Thai, i have the tom kha soup, and theirs has definitely been the worst. it was really watered down and kind of flavorless.

this place needs to ditch the carpet. it reminds me of a new england breakfast joint with all that carpet and white wooden decor bs. food is what it is, cheap crappy and decent. and if your ordering up all kinds of weird menu items from here then mabe you desereve food illness.`its open late, they deliver super fast and they do credit card on deliveries too. Plus they hired some american help to handle the phone orders (you know how annoing it can be repeting your addy, phone number and order like 50 times) I dont know why all these places cant get a f*cking computer to store all that crap. how cheap can you be? downside.....their food is always leaking when it gets here and the containers are always crushed and sad looking. they forget the extras unless you ask them and I f*cking hate that. If your really cheap just gon nextdoor to alligaror and get a free (decent ) pizza and a drink.

Can't say anything that bad about Cheers but I agree with the above poster, Lily Thai blows this place out of the water.
I used to go to cheers until Lily Thai opened and its good but the sauces are definately on the heavy side. The back garden is quite nice during the summer.

If you want good Thai go to Lily Thai on Grand. Cheers is bland and the sauces are milky and gelatinous. The lunch special are a good deal but Lily puts this food to shame.

I have eaten at Cheers MANY many times over the past four years, with no illness or injury. I would hate for anyone reading the above to pass it by based on one (questionable-- sources of food poisoning are always questionable) incident. The good has always been great, upon every order.

BEWARE!! My wife was laid up in bed for 3 days after eating the Pad Thai!!!! She had food poisoning from this place, violently ill, high temperature, high levels of excruciating pain, chills, cold sweats. EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Very good Thai food: great massaman, pad thai etc. Their squid is not as good as Siam Orchid but, their beef is better quality. Also we love the bossom friend (shrimp and calamari in a good chilli sauce). Great garden when its not too full. Unfortunately they do not do a duck dish.
