NY MAG SAYS: A restaurant claiming to serve Mexican "style" food usually warns off seekers of authentic eats, but if you hold off on the rush to judgment, first impressions are fortunately deceiving on this corner of an as of yet ungentrified chunk of Williamsburg. Past the slapdash streamers and liquor ads, a few well-chosen pieces of art dot the unassuming space. One sip of a margarita or mojito showcases an able hand at the bar, and a glimpse behind a curtained-off area reveals a comfy lounge, prone to playing contemporary Latin rock come nightfall. The menu proves itself in similarly small, impressive ways. Crunchy, El Paso-style shells on the taco plate are an initial turnoff, but a cautious bite delivers a stuffing of particularly well-seasoned chunks of beef. And while enchiladas Suizas may look sloppy and gloppy, the accompanying salsa verde is agreeably full of cilantro, and crema fresca as a welcome, authentic touch. The real finds, however, are the Ecuadorian specialties: Shrimp ceviche marinated in fresh tomato, lime juice, red onion, and cilantro, and weekend-only specials like goat stew pull out all the authentic gustatory stops

Comments
This restaurant was dark, dirty and the food was "HORRIBLE"!
I went by some of the reviews on this site and I was terribly disappointed. Do Not Eat here unless you have no taste buds and like to eat in a dirty enviornment.

I can’t believe all these comments! I found EL MODERNO! to be a really great place. The food is amazing. The Guacamole and salsa is always fresh and delicious. Take my words for granted as a Mexican that I am I recommend El MODERNO as one of the best Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg. One of my favorite dishes are the Bocados Especiales, not to mention the Enchiladas Suizas these two dishes are so savory my mouth waters just thinking about it. What attracts me of this place at first was their $3. 00 Margaritas during happy hour. They have different flavors for their frozen margaritas but my favorite one is the Guava. Ah.! I almost forgot their sangrias are soooo good! The servers are friendly. Sometimes a little slow in the beginning. Who are these people saying it’s not good, how ever take a closer look at the time those comments were posted! I have taken many of my friends to El Moderno and its a hit every time!

the worst. the wait staff had no idea what they were doing. food was mediocre at best. the saddest part was the guacamole, 50% mayo. for shame!

I second what ms_messaround wrote. The salsa was so clearly from a jar and disgusting. I think even the guacamole that came with the overpriced fajita was factory made. The chicken tasted like it had been cooked in soy sauce. Weird and gross. Ugly Ikea'd interior. Service was passable, not great. Don't go here.

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

I belive that this restaurant has good quality of fresh food. Where you can not just enjoy mexican style food, but also ecauadorian cusine. The Tuna soup is beyond a great taste, and the Enchiladas Suizas and the Bocados Especiales are great; this are some of the platters that leaves you satisfy with your taste and budget. ah!! let me not forget about the brunch specials which is good deal.

Don't be fooled by the sign, this is not a place to go for Mexican food. This place actually is an Ecuadorean restaurant and because of this, you should order off of that part of the menu. Their Mexican food is completely sub-par and generic, BUT the Ecuadorean steak dishes and the seafood soup are extremely palatable. Repeat: this is not a Mexican restaurant, order from the Ecuadorean side of the menu and you will be taken care of.

this place is hilarious. i felt like a fool, having fallen for its shiny new exterior and the promise of 2 for 1 margaritas.
the drinks sucked, the food was BEYOND terrible: canned veggies, sauce from a jar, barely melted MEUNSTER cheese on a quesadilla. clearly what used to be one of the zillion nasty, greasy mexican joints in e. williamsburg desided to get a facelift and jack up its prices ridiculously.
