WE SAY: The food is ok and the place is spacious, but Sea is an overly-crowded tourist trap.

From Village Voice
"I really want to believe that trendy, popular Spice's spin-off, Sea, is named as a pun, in the style of Nelly's double album -- "Sweat" and "Suit" (get it? "Spice" "Sea"?) but I doubt it. Sea, like Spice, is big on atmosphere (sexy to Spice's fun). The menu's largely overlap (and don't challenge) but Sea includes a few less familiar dishes, like tapioca salad and Martini Crispy Shrimp."
From New York Magazine:
"With three branches of Spice and one SEA in Manhattan, this burgeoning Thai chainlet establishes a Brooklyn beachhead, challenging Planet Thailand, reigning curry king, on its own Williamsburg turf. Like the competition, this contender has two bars and a D.J.; its stylish 7,500-square-foot premises also feature a Buddha statue, a reflecting pool, and seventies-style lounge bubble chairs."
From City Search:
"Walk into a crowded world of disco balls, trance music, mod chairs and even a swing or two. Then, discover a sea of tranquility: a pool surrounded by greenery, watched over by a golden Buddha. Downtown club meets Buddhist shrine in this large, airy space. However, the slow and sometimes rude service is more clubby than Zen. Seafood is just one of the offerings on this lengthy and well-priced Thai menu. Excellent spring rolls, minty po pia sod rolls and chewy "drunk man" noodles in a fragrant brown sauce make great starts. The papaya salad is heavily dressed in vinegar, cabbage and chile oil. Fish dishes, like the whole red snapper served in a garlic-lemon sauce and marinated mummy fish, tend to be cooked to the max. Try the crispy banana with green tea ice cream for a rich, ungreasy treat, and don't miss the frisky pineapple-ginger martini."

My daughter went to SEA with friends during her college internship. She brought my husband and myself there because she loved it. It was okay. The food was nothing special, the service was poor bordering on wait staff that was almost non-communicative and the bathroom was the WORST! Hello, when did a restaurant or any public facilty think that it is appropriate to have five male urinals compared to one for the females?? Sure, trendy looking but very impractical. I don't like NYC or any of the surrounding areas except for Greenwich Village and West Village so I will not be returning to SEA.

How sad that I will nerver dine at Sea again!!!! On Saturday, my girlfriend, her 3 year old and myself went for a quick bite (girlfriend and I are African-American). The food was tasty as usual but what transpired when we paid the bill left much to be desired. When the waiter brought the check my girlfried just handed him her credit card. Once the card was swiped she inspected the bill to calculate the tip and noticed we were charged an %18 gratuity. When we asked for an explanation we were told by the manager (through a waitress) that the surcharge is added during the weekend because tourist aren't able to calculate the tip correctly. WE also spoke to one of the hostesses who stated that the gratuity is only added for parties of 5 or more. I sicne checked with the Department of Consumer Affairs - According to the Rules of the City of New York that is ILLEGAL. I'm appalled because I have been dining at Sea since it opened (many times during the weekend) and never experienced that before. Inspect your bill before paying. It is also unfortunate for the waiter because he would have received more than the %18.

I loved the atmosphere, however I did not like the 1 hour wait. I have very little patience. The food is just OK, nothing spectacular. Good place to hang out with friends, but the music is way too loud. It's really hard to converse and hear what people are saying. Seriously, they need to turn the music down a bit. 7.5 out 10

Sea is great!! My wife brought me there for the first time yesterday and i was shocked there was a nice place like that in brooklyn. Real stylish and definetly trendy. Had a wonderful time with my wife and its great that they have so many non-meat dishes because my wife is a vegetarian. Will definetly be going back at night when they have the dj even tho there will be a wait.. good food for a good price is defenitly worth the wait. plus they have swings for you to sit in.

I Love Sea... I was there yesterday with my wonderful husband and not only is it trendy the food is great its very private and an intimate place for couples. I wish people would stop complaining about little things. EVERYONE HAS TO WAIT... It happens. I happen to go at a good time the waitress was pleasant and you get a lot for your money...go to Mcdonalds!!!!

I eat all the time at Sea. I usually go before the crowd starts to pour in....If you have small children take em to the zoo....or chucky cheese or something you can definately see from the outside its crowded and they play music.Take your kids elsewhere stop complaining. I LOVE THE FOOD. I love everything about it. If you don't like waiting go to a local restaurant!!! Stop complaining!!!!

I liked sea the first time I went, but have not been back since someone at our table had glass (yes, a shard of broken glass) in his meal (yes, he pulled it out of his mouth).
There was no apology, and only his meal (not his drink) was comped.

I loved this restaurant. There is a bit of a wait (because it's so good), but it's well worth it. While waiting, have a mojito. They're the best I've tasted anywhere. The entrees are large, so they can even be shared. The ambiance has a trendy lounge feel, and the prices are fair.

I hate to say this but I liked this place until it became a sudden hotspot to everyone from every other neighborhood. It seems like this is the only place in Williamsburg they know of and continue to go to. The wait is always annoying and just recenty I was very disturbed. I was sitting and roaches on the wall. I was disgusted, walked out, and never going again.

Do not go to Sea ...they don't honor your reservation and the Hostess clearly wants a kick back $$$

I've been here 4 times so far. I find it best to go during a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when there is no wait. The two times I have gone at night, there has always been a wait.
It tends to be a bit loud and 'disco'ish for my taste.
The only food off the menu I have ever had is the Pad Thai, and I don't have any complaints.
They are always quick to fill your water glass as well.

I can't imagine how anyone can not like Sea. Even if you have to wait a little bit and the waiters are a bit scatterbrained. The food is YUMMY, the atmosphere is stellar, and they have this gin and ginger drink that is seriously awesome. And the prices are definitely reasonable for NYC. 2 drinks, a shared appetizer, two entrees, and tea afterward for $50 something? How could you possibly mind that?

To each is own i guess, i was taken to SEA for the first time and I must say my experience was great we got served in a timely fashion and the food was tasty and well presented. I am not sure what you guys were expecting or even if your negative comments are valid however KUDOS TO SEA IN MY BOOK.

The food at SEA is really good, Tourist trap? I think not. I go there all the time and the music is cool, the atmosphere is great. Who da heck wants to sit in a boring resturant with boring people, The food is great, Service is cool, so other than that there isn't any room for bad comments....

Price was OK.
Waiting was 1 hour.
Food was below average.
Would I go back again? NO.

Just had a most fabulous dinner in the Brooklyn resto. What an amazing ambiance and the food was perfect, different, delicious and extremely affordable. MUST try it again and will try the NYC one as well.

The basic issue with Sea is that it is a madhouse on Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights. It's that way for a good reason--people who would otherwise go to the Meatpacking district have discovered they can get pretty good food, sweet cocktails and a DJ for a quarter the price. At other times, the food is good, the setting is lovely, and the servers are very nice (I like to order some extra lime with Pad Thai; at Sea the servers always remember--at other places they never, ever do). I can well imagine that neither the food nor the service is nearly as good when there's a line of 150 people waiting to get in--but at this point, the crowds alone are enough to scare me off, so I don't really know. On other nights (and even more so in the afternoons) Sea is still a very pleasant place and a very good deal.

I was brought to SEA by my cousin and her boyfriend that live in Brooklyn being that I live in MIAMI. It was raining outside and it was crowded inside. We were given a number and told our wait would be 30 minutes. The guys decided to head across the street to a bar and drink a beer in the meantime. Each time we went back to check on our number and wait, we were told to wait a little bit longer because our number still hadn't come up. After waiting a good hour and a half, we were seated. The decor was definitely trendy and good to look at. It was a busy place. My waiter was very courteous and the water boy visited our table frequently. The food, just as mentioned by my cousins, was great and priced reasonably. I felt comfortable. I definitely will recommend it but prepare for a wait on a Saturday night!!

i love sea its the best and most delicious restaurant i have been to plus its cheap and the decor is beautiful

Used to frequent SEA quite a bit. Then the food started going downhill, followed shortly thereafter by the service. Each time I visit SEA, it seems to get worse. Good luck trying to find your waiter after your initial order, except of course when it's time for the check. I stopped going here about a year ago after politely complaining to management about the service.

The first time we went to SEA I absolutely loved it. The decor was very hip, prices were just right and we couldn't wait to tell our friends about it.
We decided to take my two older siblimgs there for dinner on a busy Saturday night. Again everything was going great until a roach ran out of one of our plates across the table.
We immediately told the waiter who offered us free dessert. We declined after that experience.
Against our better judgment, we decided to give them another chance. While waiting for a table by the beautiful pool in the center of the restaurant, we were greeted by not one but TWO HUGE WATERBUGS.
If they can reduce the roach/waterbug problem we would LOVE that place!

i take issue with the idea that if i have had a negative experience at a particular establishment, i should just "stay home" and, i'm assuming, not share my experience?
i don't want someone else's valentine's day to be ruined (as mine was) by a restaurant that can't honor a reservation, and then ignores its customers for twenty minutes until we are left with no choice but to leave.
i'll take good food and service over an "ediable" meal. (i'm talking to you, lola, you nut job.)
Posted by: ms_messaround | August 12, 2006 09:03 PM
This repulsive "eatery" has a worsening roach and mouse (droppings) problem. Steer clear of this filth-hole.
Posted by: Anonymous | August 8, 2006 09:52 PM
What rude dismissive staff, excluding the bartender up front who was fantastic. We had to flag down someone to take our order, who didn't even make eye contact with any-one at our table. Reservations are necessary but good luck communi- cating over the phone with someone who hardly speaks English.

Service was so horrible that I had to wait an hour before I could tell the waiter that the thai iced coffee had sour milk and already separated into solids. Some of the food is still okay (after going there since 2002), but the dumplings (really the whole draw for me) became mediocre. By the time I was ready for the check, an hour passed and my Mommy friend was waiting outside with her toddler. Thanks a lot, SEA!
Posted by: cheekychick | June 19, 2006 03:34 AM
The funny thing is, whether you're a lover or a hater, you are right. There have been times when I felt the place was too trendy during the day (when I brought my 3 year old daughter and another Mommy friend) then other times at night when it's just you and your girlfriends and the place is awesome. The prices are fortunately not as trendy as the presentation, and the food is not bad at all. Service really is terrible though. My husband and I walked out without tipping (we just gave $5 to the busboy who did the waitering) and the hostess actually ran after us a half block away! We told her the service was awful and we were not tipping, and you know what-- that was that. We come back and have different experiences.
As far as the B&T sentiment... SEA is in Brooklyn, hello! So how does a Manhattanite get there? By bridge or tunnel.
Posted by: tsismosa | June 18, 2006 05:38 AM
Everybody needs to stfu already..."the food is horrible"...."the atmosphere is"....blah...blah...blah...why don't u just stay home & order a god damn pizza. SEA is a pretty cool place..the food is ediable...the atmosphere is a hip & all those who over critisize it should just swallow a knife.

I don't understand how so many people can hate SEA so much! My girlfriend and I happened upon it one day, and were really quite impressed. It has a unique atmosphere, and it is yummy and cheap. We have gone a few times, and it is never crowded, or at least doesn't feel crowded because of the open space. Service was fine, and bottles of wine are inexpensive as well. As for the food coming out too fast, I really like that part. I don't really care if they are microwaving or steaming, the food tastes good, and is crazy cheap and fast. We love it.

The food is really not that good, the space is, but the food is just bland and the service is horrible. If you aren't taking people out, go to this thai restaurant on North 5th between bedford and berry...really good thai food, nice people, and new

This place is not vegetarian friendly. Even the tofu curries have fish sauce and you cannot get it made without b/c it's PREMADE...meanwhile half the staff don't even know this because I had gone in several times, requesting "no fish sauce," and maybe on the third time, a waiter confided that the curries are all premade with fish sauce. I don't care how cheap it is, this is not acceptable. At least indicate it on the menu. give the option of paying a few bucks extra for special-made entrees. There are a few items that you can order w/o fish sauce but they are so bland it's not even worth it.

Used to go to sea all the time. Their brownie cake is still the best in the city. But no more - food started to suck (I had lousy food for five times in a row until I gave up) , service is sloppy and slow - I think they just made too much money and lost their mojo...
Posted by: axel | March 4, 2006 02:55 AM
average food... but really amazing spring rolls. the cheap food prices are canceled out by expensive cocktails. in my experience, this is kind of a novelty place-- "oh cool!" the first time, then you go back and see everyone else having their "oh cool!" experiences, and you end up in the background of dozens of pictures from a BNT birthday party, and it's all a little tiring.
contrary to most of the other reviews, i have always found the service to be prompt and pleasant. nice people at least.

Sea is amazing. I don't know what all of these people are complaning about. Maybe they are old or have no style & felt uncomfortable since Sea is very trendy. Sea is tons of fun I took my bf along w/ a party of 10 for his bday & eveyone had a great time. Great food - great music - great atmosphere - good service.. Whoever designed this place did an amazing job as well. It's beautiful.
I would only say Sea is not for you if you have no style or personality..
Food is amazing.

Not only has their food become greasy, but they decide each time you order what the prices are going to be, they never are what are listed it is usually double or a few dollars more an entree depending on how busy they are, this is what they just told me, they doubled the price of my order because they are busy. i said keep it! There are plenty of Thai places in Williamsburg to eat this one has become a definate DON'T
Posted by: DVAS | February 15, 2006 12:06 AM
Let's put aside the garish tourist trap decor for one moment...
This "fine" Thai bistro is now offering the entertainment of pop-locking roaches on the tables while you wait for your meal. Word up!
But seriously folks... I sat down at 7:30 this past Friday only to be greeted by goddamn cockroaches scurrying across my table. Absolutely vile.
Posted by: BB | February 14, 2006 06:01 AM
The number one reason to dislike SEA is the food. It is bested by many places in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area on that front. These other restaurants may not have crazy 'over-the-top creative atmospheres' or seat 200 people. To me however that is a plus.
Also, I'm sure you can think of a number of politicians who disprove 'it's popular because it's good' argument. Many things are popular and downright awful.
If you want to eat mediocre food in the middle of a three ring circus, be my guest. I will abstain.
Posted by: john | February 8, 2006 06:24 AM
Wow, Cannot believe how divided the opinions on this place are. Those who hate it sound like that overly critical "type of person" that pretends to be anti-trendy, but really exposes themself as close-minded and grumpy.
The place is innovative, crazy, fun. Yes, lots of people have figured it out - it is crowded because it is good! Go on a weeknight if you hate the crowds. I applaud this restaurant for their reasonable prices, unpretentious chefs, and over-the-top creative atmosphere. Yum!
Posted by: sabrina vierling | February 1, 2006 09:06 PM
Overall, it's a nice and trendy place. However, they really have to speed up a little. The other day, as I went there for lunch, I have to wait for 15 minutes for the waiter/waiteress to give me a menu. On top of that, asking for the water, it takes another 15 minutes.
The service wasn't that impressive.

the food sucks, it makes me wonder how they make it so fast. its like they just throw it into a microwave and poof its ready. i prefer the peruvian-vietnamese restaurant on the next block.
tacu tacu is so much better. the food is great the staff in very friendly.

I am very disgusted with the service there. I had dinner there tonight and I saw a bug on the wall. I told the maitre'de about it and it was dismissed as if nothing happened. When I requested that my food be wrapped up, they didn't even offer any comps for my meal either. Their service is horrible and I will never eat there again.

Garbage food for imported tourists from Bay Ridge and Chelsea. This place is a joke. The service, food, and cheesy atmosphere is hallmark to what is in fact ruining this neighborhood. I also dislike a great deal that it has moved in across the street from one of my favorite old bars, Zabloski's, and that I am forced to look at the lame marquis when I am outside smoking. Lame. Avoid eating here at all costs.

I was once at Sea and enjoyed it so much that I didn't mind to come back some time later. Big mistake, that was. I'll skip the description of service or food since neither of them are what they claim. I'll just pity whoever think that having seen wors anywhere else is a good escuse to pay for this.
Posted by: teo | December 8, 2005 12:26 AM
I, for one, and maybe I am the only one who actually enjoyed my experience here. Sure, it's crowded and there is a wait. I have seen worse in the city though. It is a little over the top with the "want to impress you" deco, but have seen worse in the city too, so I was not truly dissapointed at all. I went with an open mind and had fun. The affordable menu is always a plus. I had the red duck (which was very tasty). If you have not been, you should go before you knock it. Just go when you have some time and expect a wait and don't go expecting a really romantic evening. Just a good time for not that much money.

when i went to SEA, i hadn't a clue. i wast told to meet there for a birthday dinner. i felt contempt before the door shut behind me. the atmosphere reminds me of a hollywood film set, the music was obnoxious and the service horrible. i like quiet, family-owned places, where the food is good and the staff is nice. i cherrish places that have character. this isn't that place. yes, it is cheap, but so are you if you take your date there. thumbs down across the board.

Sea is a fun place with a fun trend-oid environment. The service sucks, but what do you expect in a 20,000 sq. ft. restaurant with a huge menu, and nothing over $13...you get what you pay for, and that's a cool venue and a huge variety of cheap thai food. If you channel you energy towards sucking down the tasty cocktails, you wont mind the fact that your waitress may be "out to lunch"...Whats not to like?
Posted by: Nikki | November 18, 2005 05:56 PM
I want to like Sea, I really do. It can be a fun hangout and a nice date spot and a cutesy place to take the folks. But the food is so, so mediocre, and not fresh (evinced by the fact that it takes them all of two snaps to get it to the table). It's never spicy and is just generally bland. The dessert specials are also lame. Also, the many times I've been to Sea, the service has been underwhelming at best -- they push and push because they're just dying to get you out of there. I think Planet Thai's food is way tastier, and some of the smaller places in the neighborhood are better than both. Go to Cheers!

Man what happened to this place. I dont mind the crowds. But, ever since they started putting sugar in all the dishes it grosses me out. Maybe thats why everyone loves it so much. You ever see thai people eating there?

Sea is delicious. The prices are great and the quality is there. After hearing raves about Planet Thailand and being underwhelmed, I was pleasantly surprised at Sea. Probably the best Thai in the Five Boroughs, but who can really tell??? Yea, the atmosphere is sexy and trendy, but is that a bad thing? Get over yourself. Give it a try.

First couple times I went I liked sea, b&t crowd and all, but lately the food has been going downhill. Seems like everything has the same sauce lately, and then yesterday I got food poisoning from some tofu shite that had an overwhelming meat-grill flavor. Too many options in the nabe to go to sea, unless you're with shallow people you want to impress/avoid talking to. They'll love the scene, and you won't be able to hear what they are saying...

The hummer set seems to be sold on SEA, which is reason enough to avoid it. Is the food really all that? In my estimation, no. Please, all of you, go back to Manhattan.
Posted by: John Fewell | March 13, 2005 10:46 PM
I find it unfortunate that a restaurant that actually offers a lively atmosphere and a truely unique dining experience would be labled as a "tourist trap" for doing what all restaurants are created to do, make a profit. But if 'Burg hipster means going against the grain by having no customers dining in (ie Moon Shadow) and in the end having to close a restaurant within two years, then Sea by all means may be touristy. But who am I to judge. I just enjoy a tasty meal at a fraction of the price I would pay for it on the island.
