CITY SEARCH SAYS: This destination for Mexican food has a buoyant, artisanally crafted scheme of blond wood, turquoise walls and a red undulating border that immediately refreshes the eye. While the seating is vast, it's pleasingly lofty and group-ready. The restaurant, whose name loosely translates to "pimp taco," is drawing a mostly neighborhood crowd. Opened by a Texan and Californian who missed the food they grew up on, the restaurant uses organic, authentic ingredients. The lime-garnished tacos burst with such fresh fillings as slow-braised pork, snappy shrimp with marinated cabbage, and cool, marinated baby cactus. Along with a vibrant, chopped pico de gallo and lively guacamole, the queso fundido--melted cheese that's piqued with bacon, smoked chiles and onions--is a sumptuous alternative to nachos. And all are accompanied by crisp homemade tortilla chips. The pozole verde soup is only for hominy fans, but the salads are rich enough for meaty appetites, too. The cocktail ingredients are fresh and high-quality. Try a house margarita or an iced beer with lime, chile, a salted rim and splash of tomato--a stimulating take on the bloody mary.
MORNING NEWS SAYS
For a city that prides itself on having every cuisine, New York sure does fail at Tex-Mex. Every Lone Star transplant has the same question: How can I find the comfort food of home? Come to Williamsburg, my friend. Taco Chulo sells one of the cuisine’s great delicacies--queso. Its nothing more than melted Velveeta and Rotel, but experiencing this underrated delicacy away from home will have you feeling the joy Chong must have felt upon encountering Amsterdam.

i should preface by saying that i LOVE this place - been eating here on nearly a weekly basis for nearly 2 years now. but recently they have a new woman answering the phone who, no matter how nice you try to be, is ALWAYS rude and unpleasant, making you feel almost apologetic for calling. hope she's only temporary - i would really hate to have to stop ordering from here.

Yummy cocktails...I had one with cucumber in it and it was amazing..

I have been to Taco Chulo over a dozen times, and find the food to be consistently lovely. Fresh, quality ingredients, and very reasonably priced. One of my favorite places in Williamsburg. The staff tends to get crunched when it gets crowded and the service slows, but that can be worked out. And I think the Feng Shui of the place needs a little work.
But they simply make some the best guac, burritos, tacos, in NY. I recommend it highly.

You are so right Vacaloca and the bottom line is that we are sorry you got the short end of the stick that night. I can see how I sounded arrogant in my defense, but I hope you try us at some point again and let us by you that baja with rice this time and make it right.

the reason why we're so upset with taco chulo is because you don't admit any of your mistakes. all you do is justify everything that went wrong rather than owning any of the responsibility. and only by doing that can you change for the better. own your mistakes and stop acting so arrogant. try and be a little more humble. that's what pisses people off. by the way, we did wait outside for 10 min, as you had asked, and sat down where you directed us. i didn't care whether you made the mistake or the kitchen did. but the most important thing for you was to let me know it wasn't your fault, again, justifying yourself. that's what made me upset and that's what i want people reading this comment to understand.

Dear Eliza,
Just a note to set the record straight, just because a message was written on the Taco Chulo message board from a servier's view point, does not mean that a Taco Chulo server actually wrote it, as I am pretty sure one did not--read it again, it's written in the third person about servers in general. We run a tight ship and we are really pro customer, we don't overtly profile guests here and sum them up--the most we would ever do was that if a server thought they would have a conflict with a guest, they would ask the manager to help them wait on this one table.
This is a free space to vent (for better or for worse), and as the owner of this restaurant, we do strive to give customers great service. I am not sure if you are the same eliza as eliz from a few messages ago, but for example, you or whoever eliz was, wrote about us spending money on a d.j. where we should spend money hiring bartenders--well, we don't spend money on a d.j., we have a d.j only on a few weekend shifts and it's a labor of love for them, and we do have a bartender on every night that we are open--so perceptions are not always accurate. I guarantee we always are striving to improve, but this blog space just focuses so much on the negative gripes that people have, I always think for every 100 people we satisfy, we disappoint 1, and that one disappointed soul always chooses to comment on these blog spaces,--I guess with human nature it's much easier to criticize than to praise, as negativity is a tendency.
It jades me as a business owner about what community is about these days. For example, another example, vaca loca tried us out, brought a party of six in with 2 children right after one of those McCarren pool shows when every one came to Taco Chulo at the same time. They sat down at 10 p.m. on a Sunday night with two children before we were ready to properly receive them, (dirty table, no menus, no utensils-napkins), that's why we have a please wait to be seated sign--so we can approach people and say, please give us a few minutes to make your table ready. This poor gentleman did receive a Baja burrito with potatoes, when he wanted rice--the kitchen made a mistake--it happens. I was notified of the problem right away. But he refused us to right his wrong--he did not want another one. So he left unhappy and makes a generalization about Mexicans not liking potatoes. Mexicans don't eat burritos in the first place--it's a popularized Mexican-american invention --the potatoes/rice debate is an ongoing one, but i guarantee in San Diego and Northern Mexico, potatoes are in burritos. As for water being poured into an almost empty sprite glass, the customer might have said, hey that's my sprite glass not my water glass (as they are both pint glasses that look alike), and the server would have said, "oh, I am so sorry, do you want more sprite--or let me get you a clean water glass?" Again, this customer sat silent and went home and then surfaced a month later on this board saying how awful we were, rather than vocalizing their unhappiness when they were in the restaurant to rectify the situation.
And, for JAILE, I am going to stay out your war with Suzy, so you don't have to give me advice about how to handle it, as I am an actual grown up, however, I've wanted to say this to you for awhile: we put our corona banners up for cinco de mayo--as we had a beer happy hour that weekend and that's how promotions go. . .We took them down two weeks later not because of your comment about how you were confused about our aesthetic mission, but because it was the end of Cinco de Mayo, I would have taken them down sooner, but it was not a pressing priority--, we did listen to you about the size of our to go crema and salsa tubs, because it was fair and I agreed with you, Americans love sauce and if we charge 50cents for sauce, the expectation is that it's gotta go a long way. But your delivery, how you communicate your grievances is so ascerbic, it really can sting. To call a server, I mean, someone you've never met, an "idiot" is just plain outright inhumane. I appreciate your comments, but you get so personal, and we don't even know each other--it's just not respectful of other people, on a human level.
At Taco Chulo, we are a casual dining taqueria and Mexican restaurant. We take peoples orders and bring them food, that is what we do. Most of the time, we succeed in our food and service. Every once in a while things don't go perfect for a table for many reasons. But I always believe if customers are communicative with their server about their issues or pass their opinions on to a manager by saying "can I speak with the manager," the chance would be much greater for guests to leave a restaurant really satisfied.. I just think people love to revel in their itching displeasure about the little things, sort of like a smiling pig rolling in manure and it makes me disappointed in this consumer culture.

Based on the comments above, and knowing that servers at this restaurant are profiling customers as bad tippers the minute they arrive, I will never order from or set foot in this restaurant again. Taco Chulo should strive to meet/exceed expectations, not penalize customers who have repeatedly given them a chance to improve. Good luck.

I tried to eat at this place once, but they wouldn't serve me. I had to ask for the menu, the utensils, and then the food, which i nearly passed out waiting for. the food was ok (better than vera cruz, worse than bonita). i thought i'd give it another try when i had relatives in town since there aren't many good mexican places in nyc, believe it or not. again, i had to ask for the menus, the utensils, and the food, which they messed up. ask any mexican and they'll tell you potatos don't belong in a burrito. then the waitress had the nerve to question my order, shifted the blame on the chefs, and poured water into my sprite. i was going to leave a 2% tip for the horrible experience, but the waitress screwed me one last time by sticking an 18% gratuity because their were six in our party (4 adults + 2 kids). so unless you want a major clusterf**k for mediocre mexican food, try the best place for mexican at this tiny joint on grand street between manhattan and graham. a place that serves champurrada is better than one that doesn't. it blows away bonita, as well.

for everyone commenting on staff, about terrible service and "idiots" working at taco, perhaps you are what servers call " problem customers" and you are IGNORED because you are disrespecful to the staff. ever think of that? being in the service industry is like anything else in life. treat others as you would like to be treated. if you walk into a restaruant with an attitude and are disrespecful and demanding, that is what the person that is there to help you is going to return. a disrespectful attitute right back at cha!.. oh, and p.s. servers who have been doing this for a long time can smell a bad tip a mile away. why go out of your way for a few dimes?

Suzy, you are a psycho fool, and Dija, you seriously do not want this wingnut on your side.
Every time I've written a remark in this forum, I make a point of saying how good the food is, we order from here at least once a week. My complaints were mainly about wait service, as are many others in here, and I remarked on the banners the one time I saw them up simply because they WERE out of character with the place itself. Noticed they came down shortly thereafter. Was I wrong?
Hopefully Taco Chulo will take all these remarks with an open mind and a grain of salt if needed, and if there is room for improvement, it will be made. Just don't make the mistake Suzy did in alienating an entire community with her hostility and sheer arrogance. It really isn't worth it in the long run.

I was so sad when Bean closed, but I'm happy to find a replacement in Taco Chulo - which I love love love. The longer wait eases some delicious taco guilt...

the velveeta queso is F-REAL. i wouldn't do it at bean, for years, because i thought it was too cheesey (har). but it really IS a tex-mex thing. i never made anything non authentico at bean, and i just hated the idea, but everybody kept saying DO IT, so i gave in and did it. they loved it. FYI, BTW, velveeta is INSANELY expensive. taco chulo is not ripping you off. DAMNIT. when taco chulo opened i was pissed off, because the prospect of ANOTHER mexican take-out joint in the hood was just too much, BUT ... c'mon guys, stop being so critical. none of us are rich people, we don't have rich restaurants, and the only thing we may have to watch out for is rich little kids from the areas surrounding our beloved city. C'MON, kids, i owned a restaurant on the lower east side in the late '70's, and then, another one, on the lower east side, in the beginning of the '80's. we weren't like this! we ate at the local polish diners and the greasy spoons and we never complained about ANYTHING! we were nice people. what's with the snarky comments and the attitudes of superiority? who are you kids? i don't get it. anyway, best luck to taco chulo, i'm behind you, suzy from bean and union picnic.

Went for Brunch, the food is great. Who cares if its not tex-mex, or mex or whatever. They are obv trying to do their own thing.
Anyways I think the place is cool but the one problem that has been mentioned many times b4 really is the service. You guys have to hire some more servers and keep them staffed.
Other than that good yo.

Taco Chulo is for brunch. Never too crowded and the menu is much more exciting than it is for dinner.

Thanks Sunny for your support, I've often wondered too if someone was out to get Taco too by some of those comments of yesterday, but I think Taco is here to stay foreva in your hood. YO happy birthday, TACO!

You know, I really think the cost comments are way off base. Actually so much so I think it is someone trying to scare off business. Because face it people, a $5-7 burrito that is as big as your plate is NOT--- I repeat, NOT a burned piece of fish the size of a dollar for 21 bucks next door. Really, someone is just plain out to get these guys. TC is really cheap, the food is AMAZING. As a Texan and a New Mexican, THE FOOD IS TO DIE FOR... The queso, the cactus, yum yum yum. I get brunch delivered every weekend and its always on time and delicious, too.... Thanks ladies. You rock.

I have to support the velveeta queso. I'm here for the summer and I've lived in Texas my entire life. I love the queso! Though I prefer Curras over Kerbey Lane (in Austin), I know what they're going for, and they achieved it. Thanks for feeding my fix while I'm so far from home :)

So they took down the Corona banners, thank god, but DAMN the service there has sucked lately. The last time we were there the place was almost empty, but the waitress was clueless (short brunette in case you want warning), we sat there with empty margarita glasses for 15 minutes before finally flagging the idiot down and asking for another round. She had walked past us 100 times and never seemed to notice. But, once again, the food was excellent. And, yes, they could stand to be a bit more generous with their salsa and sour cream sides. Order in and you're lucky to pull a full teaspoon of sour cream out of those tiny black tubs.

I ordered from here for the first time the other night. Best burrito I ever had outside of California (never been to Texas, so i don't know about Tex Mex). I ordered the vegan burrito--love the potatoes in it instead of rice. Not heavy at all! My only tiny gripe was that I asked for sides of salsa--I need loads--and said I'd pay for it, and I guess I should have asked --the sides of salsa amount to about a tablespoon. I'll still order from them again. Would be nice to see a few more vegan options, too, as this is advertised as being veggie-friendly. Maybe some TVP or tofu options in the burritos.

oh snap! "Taco Gourmet" got served! Taco Chulo is good, not great, but this isn;t Los Angeles, so Taco Chulo gets the job done. Margaritas are awesome. Service is slow and forgetful. Change that and you got a solid winner. Pollo Rositto burrito is muy bueno!

Hailing from Texas, food was a let-down.They lack garnishes on the plates, and have unpleasant looking salads. There was not even a celery or carrot stick in the bloody mary. More decorations! No salads on plates!

Great food, the chorizo tacos are superb. Closest I have ever come to a true Mission burrito in NY. But what's going on with the decor in there?
First they looked very typically trendy and Williamsburgy, with the wavy walls and crisp colors. But then we began to notice empty tequila bottles appearing regularly along the curvy walls. Well, OK, so now we're going for some sort of frat house theme - food is still good - whatever. But then we go in the other night and it looks like a Corona marketing team shit all over the place...chintzy banners everywhere.
Now, I understand the money that can be generated by this kind of endorsement, but...um...hello? It rather smacks of an identity crisis, as the Corona banners simply clash with their overtly stylish interior.
I say either bust out and drench the place in Christmas lights, Piñatas and Corona banners, OR take this crap down and go back to your clean, elegant little selves. I'd be happy either way, but right now I'm sore confused.
Again, the food is excellent!

love the texture of the house made tortillas.
however im not going to be ordering from there anymore unless someone else is buying. im not about to drop 18 bucks on delivery for a burrito and chips and guac.
Posted by: ryan in burg | May 23, 2006 12:25 AM
So - here's the deal people. If you like the food or not, fact is this is NOT tex-mex. I know big surprise most places aren't. However, this place the owner claims to be from Austin and bringing authentic tex-mex to the 'burg. Nope. Sorry. I can't even believe you claim to be close. At least you have Queso on the menu, but the queso is lumpy and disgusting. Try going back to any respectable tex-mex restaurant in Texas and do a comparison. Here are some other hints: Salsa - go look up a recipe on the Internet, it is NOT a bowl of chopped tomoatos. Oh, were you going for Pico de Gallo? Well, that's not a bowl of chopped tomotos either! A little spice would be nice, the food is bland as Irish food. The Guac was disgusting. Here's a clue, chopped onions, cilantro, a bit of garlic, chopped jalapeno's, lime juice and a bit of salt. You don't just put avocodo's in a blender. Whoever your chef is needs to be fired. There may be people who like this place, but one thing is for sure do not expect good tex-mex.
Posted by: JpMaxMan | May 22, 2006 03:21 PM
Seems like plenty has been said about TC already, but I have to make one comment. My husband and I are both from Texas and have traveled extensively in Mexico. We are totally willing to pay for good, authentic, Tex-Mex and Mexican style food. Particularly in NY, where such cusine is harder to come by. But TC is neither Tex-Mex nor Mexican, and worse of all its just not very good! The dishes are not prepared correctly (see Queso post above); don't taste good (there is no excuse for bland guac)and are pricey (2 bucks for chips?) I wish so much TC was a great restaurant that I could recommend with out hesitation. But as is, its yet another example of poor execution of regional specialites that just are not that hard to make.

For those who live in the area, we are lucky to have this place. I'm surprised people post negatively about Taco Chulo, seems some people just don't know a good thing when they see it. I think it is a hipster's dilemma, to think everything should be the way he/she wants it and also be basically free. I think that Taco Chulo is a great meal. It's not the absolute best but then you can go into the city and eat at dozens of places that are incredible. Of course, you'd have to pay for those meals at the rate that they charge and if you're complaining about the price of a taco at this place, you probably won't be going anywhere in Manhattan. To those of you who complain that the this place is too expensive, Are you crazy? $4.50 for a big "loc'd" out taco is expensive? If you want to eat crap then go to Burger King and get super sized. Why bother even posting? When was the last time you had a taco in the city? Most places charge $3.50 for taco half the size and less than half the tastiness, I've lived here and in LA and I have tried quite a few places here in order to locate a spot that has decent food, responsible servings, and a comfortable atmosphere like many places in the west do. Taco Chulo offers all of that at a good price. The size of their Tex MEx and Norteno Tacos is very big. You have to eat them with a fork before you can pick them up in your hands. Why complain about a $4.50 taco that has delicious ingredients and is big. These tacos are not little Taco Bell tacos. And as far as a place like Matamoros is concerned, it's a great and special place with nice people who work there but one, it's just a counter and two it's teeming with I don't want to know how much nastiness. If you would prefer to eat there because two sopes cost the same as a big taco at Taco Chulo then you shouldn't be posting. It's not fair to compare a hole in the wall with a real restaurant.
Taco Chulo is very good. The owner, who has served me at least four times, is nice and excited about her food. The agua Frescas are delicious, make sure to have the Jicama. Go here! and chill out.

Been living in NY for a year, looking desperately for a quality burrito place like they have back in Cali. Taco CHulo blew me away with their new Santa Cruz burrito. Their vegetarian taco too was way delicious. I so am there all the time. Hot margaritas-especially the chulo marg. Highly I recommend this restaurant!! I had no issues with the service--both people who waited on me were so pleasant and positive.

something is just weirdly off with this place. given it five shots until my boyfriend got sick after eating there. I really want it to be good, but something always seems just not right.

Hi, I'm one of the infamous taco chulo owners. In response to the velveeta on the nachos: you can totally order nachos with chihuahua cheese. On our menu they are called "nachos classicos" because they are the way you may have eaten nachos before. The "nachos chulos" which the above comentor ate are the velveeta nachos. Nachos Chulos have many fans, and velveeta may well be a love it or hate it item. I know of many, many velveeta lovers. This dish also is traditional in a way; it was inspired by the Kerbey Queso at Kerbey Lane Cafe in Austin, Texas. Any Texan knows the appeal of velveeta, especially when combined with the divine Ro-Tel, jalepenos, guacamole, refried beans, and chips. But if it's not your thing, we understand, and we offer you the Nachos Classicos--check them out the next time you're in.
As to the unfriendly/bad service: as a new restaurant we suffer from erratic business. It's hard to staff accordingly. It's definitely something we are working on.
We appreciate your comments and your patronage.

i'm fine with the prices. they seem reasonable to me for good ingredients....but what is up with the velveeta on the nachos? anyway- after reading this board and seeing the owner really takes notice and responds to critique- i thought id go try it out. we got the nachos - which werent bad- but not really what i expected. velveeta? not into it. but when my shrimp taco arrived i loved it- delish. better than buffalo cantina. however, the service was absoluely horrendous. also there was no bartender? so our waiter had to take our drink order and then proceed to make the 5 margs HIMSELF. it took f*cking ages. once we got the drinks he said nothing and disappeared w/o taking our order for like 20 mins. all of this might have been ok though if he wasnt such a snot. a simple... "we are understaffed tonight, so bear with us" would have been totally cool. he had ZERO personality. anyway- a helpful really friendly waitress came over- thank god, really nice black haired tattoed pierced girl, loved her. she was really nice and knew what she was doing and apologized. seems they need to be more choosy about the staff they hire. the food was good, the drinks were good, but the time we spent in there on just getting drinks and nachos and and a taco was a little outrageous. it wasnt even busy. i might stick to delivery, but i am pretty good at second chances. i understand kinks at a new spot and finding a flow. maybe a bartender is in order?
Posted by: totes yum | April 7, 2006 08:57 PM
taco chulo serves, hands down, my favorite fish burrito and taco in the neighborhood. the service inhouse is a little spotty, occasionally, i have to agree. and i do find the menu hard to pin down at times--the overearnest salads sing an entirely different tune than the velveeta clogged nachos--but, uh, did i mention the fish burrito? with cilantro rice and salsa verde? i wish i had one RIGHT NOW.
the delivery is prompt and basically ideal.
Posted by: ruben | April 1, 2006 06:41 AM
WTF is up with the comments about the prices being so high? I think the prices are totally reasonable, especially considering how tasty the burritos are, and I'm a cheapo who usually prefers to eat pasta and frozen veggies at home. Considering the boring crap most restaurants serve and the prices they charge, what's wrong with $6-7 for a giant burrito? That whole idea about roasted onions and hot peppers (I forget the name -- rajas?) is f-ing brilliant. Delicious delicious. Can't get enough of it. Also, lots of vegan options. Oh, and Matamoros (if a single item they served were vegetarian) is good, but it's hardly a place to have your birthday party or schmooze with your friends, no?

i just got delivery from them last night and found the woman on the phone very friendly and ordered some tacos but then she urged me to get some of these mega tacos or something like that, and so I did and she chose the sauces, when it arrived (very quickly I might add so something was up with that one 2 hour wait) the gauc/salsa/chips for 8 DOLLARS was good, but $$$ and my mega tacos were mega soggy. The fish baja one was tasty but the pork one seemed to have quality ingredients but bad flavor combo, ie: salsa verde on pork, it was kinda strange tasting and not the best and for five bucks a pop it wasn't really that big. I think this place COULD be great but they should work on their pricing a bit. I know some people will majorly disagree with me on this, but I still prefer Bonita

Taco Chulo aint the best and it aint the worst. A comment to the person above, at least they admitted their mistakes to you. I have been to many places in Williamsburg where they don't. I am sure that your experience was frustrating, but they are just starting out and I don't know if you have ever worked in the service industry but, it is really tough to be the wait person who has to face hungery angry customers and take the brunt for slow kitchens and bar staff. Taco Chulo has some kinks but I think that they'll figure it out.
Posted by: flower | March 6, 2006 02:02 AM
I went to Taco Chulo last night and had a truly unbelievable experience. When we arrived it was crowded and understaffed as usual. The first waitress to seat us took our drink order and then promptly forgot it. We waited for nearly a half hour before asking what was up with our drinks, and the seating waitress 'fessed up to forgetting the order. Our second waitress then informed us about 25 minutes later that she had lost our food order. When pressed by a member of our group to see if she could hurry our orders out to atone for her mysterious screwup, the waitress informed us that this request was not possible.
So to sum up--they wasted roughly an hour of our time and the service fucked up twice on the only two things they had to do for us all night. I will never eat here again and can only urge other people to steer clear of this place. It was the single most laughable dining experience I have ever had.

The food is some of the most authentic, made-with-love, fresh, regional Mexcian in, forget about WillyB, all of NYC. For that matter, this side of Frontera in Chi- Town. If you are concerned at all about what goes into your body, you will find no better friends than the women who run this joint. They care about what you eat, and about what they put out. The artisinal shells are the tops, and if you love small-batch Tequilla, you will fall for T.Chulo. She's a siren. Pimp on, ladies!

I just hit up taco chulo yesterday. Impressed. Tortillas were great, great braised pork. Aside from wishing drinks were cheaper, the only problem was the quality of the tap water, warm and horrible tasting. put a filter on that thing.

Hi it's Dija from Taco. In response to the previouse review, we intend on seriously lowering the prices on brunch drinks. We did the free brunch drink promo through the depth of winter to attract people. We are just in the process of switching it to a happy hour style, where the bloodies are way cheap and the brunch entrees are even cheaper. Keep hanging on for a week or so for getting our act together on this one, cause this one will stay.

i love taco chulo! i've had nothing but good experiences there, and i go for brunch often. service is casual, down to earth, friendly... food is creative and tasty... and everyone across the street at atlas needs to come over HERE for the coffee. french-pressed and always fresh. and oh, the bloody marys, so spicy, so fresh! my only complaint is that the drinks are no longer included in the weekend brunch price, which means my beloved bloody mary adds another $6 to the bill.

i was the one who formerly posted about the music being a bit too hyper/loud. i am extremely happy to report that, upon a followup weekend visit recently, the music was completely chilled out, softer, and the atmosphere completely comfortable and pleasant. dining in is now as wonderful an experience as the food itself. thank you. this excites me, believe me. if you have not been to chulo recently, do, go.

WOW! Best burrito spot I've found so far. Potatoes in the burrito--so key! Seriously in terms of food, ignore the haters, this place is on-point. The space is a bit massive (always feels empty when I'm there) but the staff has always been great! Forget Matamoros, sure they're cheap but you get what you pay for. Everything tastes so much fresher at Taco Chulo. Keep up the great work, my girlfriend come in almost weekly for our burrito fix...

I can't get enough of this place. Cool atmosphere, and the Mission Burrito is out of sight! Service can be a little on the slow side, but if you don't like talking to the person you're dining with, you shouldn't be out with em anyway.

First of all, I have to respond the previous entry's totally racist comment about Taco Chulo. I am one of the two “white women” who own Taco Chulo. Last time I checked, I am anything but white, and my white partner is Mexican. Just cuz we don’t look dark does not mean that you can sum a person up as being not Mexican. But we don’t feel the need to boast about our backgrounds. We are not trying to be value cheap like Matamoros, we are trying to do our own thing—which is we love Mexican food and want to make it the best our taste memories muster. We make homemade corn tortillas without any preservatives, which is the single biggest difference between us and many other Mexican restaurants in the hood. We are not trying to gentrify Williamsburg—that’s a lost cause, it’s already gentrified and Bushwick's well on its way. We do use totally different ingredients than many other Mexican restaurants, check out Native Seed Search. Org, that is where we get our hominy, chiles and beans—that non-profit org donates all its funds to helping Mexican farm co-ops and Native American reservations maintain the sustainability of heirloom crops by allowing them free access to seeds to grow their own legacy of crops. Our meat is totally antibiotic and hormone free, which is why our prices are so high—we owe like over 8 k in debt to our meat purveyor so people like you can eat clean meats. So organic your ass, yeah, you should just stick with IBP and feed lot reared animals, which is what it seems you want. I usually don’t respond to reviews that are critical, as this is a free country. But you my friend, are so offensive with your black and white notions of Mexican foods and mean spirited assessments, that I need to set the record straight with you—I just don’t think you get what we are doing. I’d love for you to come in and identify yourself to me, so I can buy you a free taco and have a friendly chat with you, but my guess is you are quite cowardly, which is why you use a blog to express your opinions instead of vocalizing them to one of us when you are dining in so we have a chance to talk things out with you. Yours truly, Dija Amer

Two white women cook up tacos at triple the price of the local places. Go to Matamoros where two Mexican women cook the same food, tastes better and you don't feel like you've been ripped off...This kind of place is gentrification at it's worst. Organic and farm fresh my ass.

Forgot Taco Bites, the afore-mentioned taco/burrito stand in Greenpoint (warm, wilted lettuce in burritos?)- Taco Chulo is superb Mexican food. Tasty tacos, quesadillas & queso make this an instant fave of mine. Ample portions & the food & drinks are super-reasonably priced. This is one of the only area places that I immediately wanted to go back to the night after my first visit. Location is a little out of the way, but the space is great, which I didn't expect.

we went on Saturday night. The service was friendly, if a little spotty, but the tacos were deeeee-lish. I recommend it

There's a great little Mexican place on the north west corner of McCarren Park where Bedford & Nassau converge. Hole in the wall beside the mexitallian restaurant. Yo!
