WE SAY: Read a magazine or book from their
small, but interesting collection while enjoying
a tasty cup of Java. The scones are small but delicious.
The atmosphere is always pleasant and their
sandwiches and soups are always fresh. Call to
find out more about music in the evenings. Overall a very enjoyable
little coffee shop.

From Village Voice
"The baristas are cool and quirky, and the brew thick enough to stand up to ice and milk to make the best iced coffee in the city. The shelves are lined with books, too, at The Read Cafe, which combines the best aspects of coffee bar and used bookstore, and you can always pluck down Sartre's Being and Nothingness if you need to while you sip your latte."

They shut down there Bedford location this SA. SO sad, they've been at that location for 8 years, 4 of which I had been a frequent customer. Staff looked really bummed, wonder if they're moving to S. 3rd and S.4th for rent reasons? I hope they do ok in the new locale, and it's such a shame thewy had to shut this down.

They guy that drives the van that works there is a shitty driver. Almost hit me and other people in the sidewalk when he blew threw the stop sign. Other than that the coffee and bagels are good.

I really like this place, but I have to say that the service is THE WORST!! you have to wait for everyone to finish their conversation with friends before you can get your order taken, then they resume talking so that it takes about 10 minutes to get a cup of coffee. If you order a bagel be prepared to be there for about a half an hour. Everything always tastes good and the outdoor seating area in the back is great in the summer; quiet, not too crowded. Just don't go here if you are in any type of a hurry.

But The Read was more than just engaging attractive staff, I forgot to mention. Books wallpapering the walls and small reading lamps along with scrumptious and aromatic bakery delights persuade you to spend the whole day watch the world go by from inside this unpretentious and inviting treasure on Bedford.
Seriously a highlight of a week's worth of wandering the steel and concrete pillars of Manhatten. I'd put my feet up in The Read Cafe any day. If only I had found it sooner, my trip would have been more delightful.

Stumbled in on accident, lured in by a small handwritten sign that I think said fresh soup. I was sick. The soup was leek and potatoe and came hot in a huge bowl with a little spoon. I didn't mind the spoon as it seemed like there was even more soup. The price was good, the table wobbly and the guy who brought it was cute.
Cosy atmosphere, friendly and engaging staff who were as previously mentioned, nice to look at. I'd go back all the time but I live in Vancouver.
