NY MAG SAYS: Finally, the raw bar the kids in Williamsburg have long demanded! Balthazar bartender Danny Minch and Barrio Chino owner Dylan Dodd have opened Walter Foods at 253 Grand Street. Justin Ernsberger, formerly of Clinton Street Baking Company and Aqua Grill, brings his love of sea creatures to the menu -- lobster appears in five dishes. This is good news for anyone on the L train looking to score some clam chowder this fall; if you're not, there's a burger and fried chicken and some steaks for you. Given Minch's former life as a bartender, it's no surprise that the cocktail menu is more robust, if not a little old-timey: See Sling, Singapore for details.

Wow....
I eat out a lot. Way too much, and most of the time in the burg.
Just finished a meal (clam chowder/blackened perch) at Walter Food that easily ranks up there with the best the burg has to offer. Service was excellent as well.
(Only complaint, the cocktails weren't out of this world, but I had a couple at Delmano last night - so perhaps not a fair comparison).
Had to roll my ass home...

Been there twice now. Tried all of the seafood bar options, appetizers and steak.
Menu is not "exciting", but that's not what the place is about. The food was excellent--all oysters fresh, lobster not overcooked, good steak. Service was great too, and the bartender knows how to mix a drink.
As I said already, been twice, but will be back for sure.

My Husband and I went to Walter Foods on Friday night. We got there about 7:30 and we were seated right away. By the time we left around 9:00 the place was crowded, but not chaotic.
Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful, he seemed to really enjoy the food at the restaurant.
We got the New England Clam Chowder as an appetizer and it was fantastic. Very creamy and fresh tasting and and great flavor.
I had the filet and my husband had the fried chicken. We both enjoyed our meals.
We will definitely go back.

Hello Amy. Normally, we don’t respond to comments about us in blogs but we felt this was too important. As owners, we are shocked and very concerned that you got sick. We take nothing more seriously than the quality of our all our food, especially our seafood. We use only the best purveyors, keep are inventory very low, and have deliveries coming in everyday to keep everything extremely fresh. All three of us in management positions have passed the Food Protection Course with flying colors and are very meticulous in respecting those guidelines.
If you are willing, we would love for you to contact us so you can describe the details of your experience; ask for a manager at (718) 387-8783. It is vital for us, or any other restaurant, to know about any food related issues right when it happens (not only for you, but for other patrons as well).
Thank you very much.

Read about Walter Food opening this last Tuesday on NYmag.com this week and we had a friend in from out of town. They don't take res for parties smaller than 6. We were 3 @ 9p and it was only 15min wait. I ordered 6 Blue Point + 6 Beau Soleil oysters while we sat at the bar. The oysters came with a cocktail like sauce and a nice Vignette and oysters were tasty. Also had a drink called the Diablo (tequila, honey, + lime) that I enjoyed very much. We ordered Pigs in a Blanket (App) and My Girlfriend and I both had the Blacken Catfish (special entree) and our guest had the 1/2 Fried Chicken with Mashed Potates(with bacon bits!!) and a honey chili sauce on the side. The Pigs in the Blanket came out a little slow. It was simply a nice sausage in some french pastry dough version with a sort of red pepper sauce. I like the sauce. My girl missed having mustard. The Blacken Catfish was really good. Cooked perfectly. The sauce on the side was good. The Fried Chicken was also cooked perfectly and was all around good but the honey chili sauce was the stand out. There are two items on the menu dessert menu, Bread pudding with chocolate sauce and Berry Cobbler. We had both. The Bread Pudding was better. Everything we ordered we eat every bite of. The food was SO good. The prices are understandable. The service was attentive, friendly, and nice. I give Walter Food a 4.2/5.
