CITY SEARCH SAYS: "Saffron-colored walls, arched windows, textured tiling, comfy booths and a relaxed, convivial buzz set the tone in both the bar and small dining room. Service knows what to recommend and the dishes arrive at the perfect pace. Though the spot takes its name from a popular Spanish cartoon, Chef Diego Gonzales's cooking is serious. Just when you think you've found a favorite, a new dish arrives to wow your palate: light and moist egg-potato combo of tortilla Espanola or crispy, melty ham and bechamel croquettes, or potato chunks in an intensely layered romesco sauce. Seafood comes off just as well, with a smoky blend of garlic, white wine, pepper and parsley lending a stewy depth to shrimp, and paprika brightening tender chunks of octopus. No dessert is offered; all the better, however, to finish off your Albarino with the first-rate platter of Spanish cheeses. Try the degustation menus, a chef's choice of five ($12) or 10 ($24) small plates, which prove you can never have too many tapas."

NEW YORK MAG SAYS:

Co-owned by the former chef of nearby Allioli, Zipi Zape (named for the Spanish comic-strip twins) displays its traditional Spanish tapas in the sort of refrigerated cases you see in sushi bars; here, they house tuna-stuffed piquillo peppers, boquerones with caper berries, and seafood salad, all of which can be ordered individually or in "tasting menus" of five or ten.

Comments

TERRIBLE FOOD. Shitty staff. They tried to pass off RUBBERY MICROWAVED CHICKEN. Fucking Gross. I'll never go back.

Excellente! I don't know what these other people are talking about, but this is the best Tapas you can get in the city. Their service is patient and friendly. Their selection of Spanish wines is superb. The black paella is amazing as is the pickled ajo (garlic). According to my Brit friends, this is the closest you can get to being in Barclenona in NYC. Highly recommended.

Truly amazing experience.Since I've moved to Williamsburg been there twice already and never was disappointed.Very good food, consistent and friendly service

Great tapas bar. After reading Brooklyn Records review about this tapas bar,we decided to give a shot.Like they said it is the best Tapas Bar in Newyork. We could only try couple of tapas and their seafood stew special.Beyond our expectations the food was so fresh and tasty. The place is very cute and cozy.Definately will go back and check more of the tapas items.

Apparently the twins who run the place also simultaneously write fake reviews, as they can't seem to not post the same review 3 times in a row.

Please, just hit "Post" once.

And I simply love this example: Best Croquetas Ever!!! And the morcilla, the patatas bravas, the calamari.

What a memory! DAMN THIS FOOD MUST BE GOOD!

Best Croquetas Ever!!! And the morcilla, the patatas bravas, the calamari... I could go on and on!

I never understood why people dislike this place. It is so consistent and so fun to dine at.

The food is not bad, but overpriced. Tapas at this restaurant have nothing to do with restaurants in Spain. The portions are too small. The owners are are very stingy with their wines.

Our party really enjoyed this tapas joint. We have found out about this tapas bar after the review in Newyork magazine about hidden treasures in N.Y
food was fantastic,Sangria was great..And the service was very informative, friendly...
Thanks Z.Z for the lovely experience...

food is lovely...although the sangria is basically just ice, with a splash of watered down juice. a total rip-off at $30 for a v. small pitcher. its a shame, as i do enjoy this restaurant and its wonderful food and flavors, but the service is so condescending and just irritating in general, that it's just not worth coming here. thanks, but i dont need a unwarranted lesson in how tapas "works" or what calamari is...very condescending and snotty.

there are other equally interesting tapas restaraunts in the city without the rude service and crappy sangria...

Best Spanish Tapas ever..Very cute restaurant, great food, friendly service..
The place has totally europian feeling...

I'm very confused. I don't find the prices to be high at all. it's a tappas bar- not a friggin all you can eat.
The food is well prepared, and I have never experienced a problem with the service. Maybe the see their patron's true personality and return the attitude.

What frauds! Obvious fake reviews. Geez, you could at least make an effort to have the posts seem a bit different from one another. I mean, how hard is it to use a shift key?

Or, better yet, you could improve your mediocre food served at high prices, and your indifferent, often downright cold and snooty, service?

The food was great but I have insane Diarrhea today so be warned.

What's with all the hate? I like Zipe Zape. It isn't what Allioli was, sadly, but the food is consistently good and the specials are always great. The twins have never been rude to me-- nor have I ever seen them treat anyone else badly. I just wish Diego would get back to the kind of menu he created for Allioli.

ya pidoras, pizu chujie doors, zaabuzte moi url - http://greatpharmacies.com/ a suda pishite pisma i spamte - admass@pisem.net

the dude with the phony tail is a dimwit. they throw food at you and its just ok. the muscle was frozen and quail had feathers on it. the bread rounds are especially lame. cold and boring, this place is nothing special..but if you just want to nibble and get get tipsy on decent wine before going home to molest your date....then i guess its ok. the bar is attractive though.... avoid going when its dead because the service (and food)is better when its packed (ive been there twice)

did you eat there will? or are you another typical 'burgian w/ way too much attitude?

this restaurant gets the prize for the most fake reviews. pathetic.

I am a bit confused by the reviewers stating that ZZ is not a 'good dollar value'. It's a tappas bar- hence, small portions. I have dined there a number of times and the food is consistently well prepared, the staff has always been attentive. I did notice, however, if a customer is full of affected attitude- and you all know what I mean, the staff responded accordingly- That being said, if you are starving and want a huge meal w/ large portions, don't go. If you want to have an enjoyable evenin and try interesting food, then go. But stop your bitching, understand what you are eating, and show proper respect and dining etiquette

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.

I only go with my friend from Spain. He steers us in the right direction and we get the good stuff. The sandwiches are the best.

I had a very pleasant dinner over there. We have ordered so many things in the menu and specials as well.Service was very attantive and prompt.Food was delicious. We have seriously lost control and ordered the whole menu.So it was little bit pricey. But certainly worth it.

Outstanding tapas...ZZ seems like know all about tapas. My party really enjoy the food.Sangria was perfect.Keep up the good job.

OK, is it just me or do most of the positive comments on this board sound like the same two people? One is constantly commenting on how the food is just like their trip to Spain, while the other cannot seem to unlock the CAPS key on their computer. Both seem to have a photographic memory of their meal, spouting such haikus as "CHEEKS OF THE HAKE FISH" and forever noting the jumbo scallops. Not just scallops, as most would recall, but JUMBO scallops.

We aren't that dimwitted, Zipi Zape, so I truly hope your food lives up to your own gushy reviews.

Food was disgusting and prices were high. The only redeeming feature was there tortilla which was just about ok.
For good tapas either Pinxtos or Tia Pol are about a million times better.

The only reason to go is for the sangria. Even though it is almost $30 a pitcher. Inept service, overpriced food. Have yet to find a decent tapas place in this city. I'm missing Iberico (and even Cafe BaBaReeBa) in Chicago.

The food is just okay, and the prices certainly aren't cheap. When you're charging that much for a pitcher for sangria a little plate of croquettes, I don't know. It's fine if you want something very informal and easy to nibble on or sip back, but I certainly wouldn't call this cheap quality eating.

VIVA ESPANA.I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT I COULD FIND GREAT TAPAS BESIDES SPAIN.VERY IMPRESSING.MY OPINION BETTER TAPAS DISHES THAN SPAIN.SECOND TRIP I HAVE BROUGHT FRIENDS JUST CAME BACK FROM SAN SEBASTIAN.THEY WERE AGREE WITH ME.I CAN NOT EVEN CHOOSE MY FAVORITE TAPA.IN THEIR LONG LIST OF MENU ITEMS EVENTHOUGH I DID NOT TRY THEM ALL THE ITEMS I HAVE TRIED WAS REALLY GOOD.SIMPLE JUST SIMPLE GOOD COOKING.SERVICE WAS VERY NICE TOO.SO AUTHANTIC.

WE WANTED TO TRY THIS CUTE TAPAS BAR FOR A LONG TIME.THEY WERE PARTICIPATING BROOKLYN DINING WEEK.SO
WE TOOK THIS AS AN ADVANTAGE AND WENT TO SEE THIS PLACE.WE ENDED UP ORDERING LOTS OF LITTLE THINGS FROM THEIR MENU BESIDES THE DEAL THEY WERE GIVING.I HAVE NEVER EATEN SUCH A GOOD FOOD.SANGRIA WAS A TOP NOTCH.NOT LIKE THE CHEAP VERSIONS OUT THERE..WE WERE SO GLAD TO TAKE THE TRIP.IT IS THE ULTIMATE RESTAURANT IN WILLIAMSBURG TO GO...

I am from Madrid...and living in U.S.A for last 16 years.Recently moved from L.A to Newyork..My friends have been talking about this place for a while .Finally I made it last night..I never felt so good in my life..The chef is so talented.I ve heard he is from Galicia. No wonder he is preparing all this seafood dishes..the staff is all from Spain...The restaurant was packed..I was so proud..to see all this people were appreciating the Spanish food and culture..I have notice that they were only playing pop selections from Spain..Very well done place..Great success story.

LOVED THE FRIED OYSTERS,MACKEREL SPECIAL WAS OUT OF THE WORLD...TRY THE SPECIALS....YOU CAN ALWAYS TRY THE MENU ITEMS...BUT SPECIALS SEEMS LIKE CHANGES CONSTENTLY....LAST TIME I HAD THE SALMON SPECIALS..THEY DID NOT HAVE IT THIS TIME...AND ALSO I STILL REMEBER THE CHEEKS OF THE HAKE FISH..THAT SHOWS THE CHEF WORKS WITH HIS HEART....HIGHLY SUGGESTED...

Food was good, service indifferent. Not to say bad, but more of a problem than a pleasure. A shame because it feels as close to authentic as I've had in NY. Try Pintxos in TriBeCa for a great alternative at a similar price.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Best tapas I've ever had in the US (my husband and I spent a fab week in Madrid years ago and always try tapas places when we find them in the US). Been there several times and we always take friends there. The staff is warm and friendly, the food is terrific. My favorite place in Williamsburg!

Yesterday i was there with the birthday party.Place seems quite busy.Waitstaff was very helpfull. They even choosed the dishes for us..It was perfect amount of food, great selection of tapas and extremely yummy. At the end we finished with their only dessert which is warm chocolate souffle made to order..what else you ask more...the best place in Williamsburg.

Right to the point Mike.....For me it just did not make any sense how come this restaurant got so many bad reviews and so many good reviews at the same time..Z.Z is one of my favorite restaurants. When ever I go overthere I always have pleasant conversation with the owners. The food is always fantastic..and consistent..They really care about their restaurant and always top of it...All the friends I 've took with me also became regulars here.Excellent tapas place.....

One of our favorite restaurants!!! I can't find one thing bad to say about this place. The food is always good. Diego is always trying new things. I appreciate the fact that the chef, servers, bartenders are all from Spain. Everyone that I have gone with that has been to Spain, including myself say this place is probably the closest you are going to get here in NY. I think we have brought upwards to 15 people to this place and every time they come to visit they want to go back to Z.Z. The place has a very European feel to it. Not rushed, not in your face. I can only assume that the people who complained about the service have become accustomed to the 'how can I kiss your ass tonight so you give me a big tip" syndrome. This is one of those places where you are not a moving mouth. They learn you names, they are genuinely interested in people and their customers. Sad to say, but something that doesn’t happen enough in this city unless you throw $$$ around. Overall I don’t know how you can get much better. Good food, good prices, good service. A simple equation that most NYC restaurants have seem to loose sight of.

excellent tortilla,perfectly done croquetas,chorizo al diablo....had a terrific time.great Sangria..not commercialy done..cute bartender/owner

My parents are from Spain..Last week while I was visinting to Williamsburg My friend who live in area mentioned about this place..talked forever how the food is good and consistent and it is also different than other new upcoming places cause it is a family restaurant..unfortunately we were at home dinner party so I've made my mind back then to bring my parents here...this place blew our minds....excellent selection of tapas, great sangria...friendly ,funny staff...we love the pulpo, fresh crabs, baby fried herring,croquetas..oh my goddddd ,loin of pork, babk calamari, lamb chop special....chocolate souffle"by the way they have only one dessert, and an excellent dessert....we love it so much..my parents already making plans to bring their friends instead of casa galicia.....

I WAS THERE WITH A BIG PARTY LAST NIGHT.THE PLACE WAS ROCKING..SO MANY HAPPY PEOPLE WERE ENJOYING THE FABOLOUS FOOD, FUN AMBIANCE AND TOP NOTCH SANGRIA...I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND SUCH A PLACE LIKE THIS ONE..HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT...LATER I 'VE CHECKED ZAGAT..THEY WERE ALSO RIGHT ABOUT THE SWEET SERVICE...WILL GO BACK FOR SURE :):):)

if you love seafood this is the place to go...we tried razor clams, grilled jumbo scallops, grilled shrimp and ofcourse galician style pulpo..top notch quality and taste...and you should definately finish your meal with chocolate souffle.....

delicious food, prompt friendly sevice, great prices for the quality, great sangria....we loved it.......

EXTREMELY COZY CURE BAR WITH FRIENDLY SERVICE AND OFCOURSE GREAT FOOD...VERY CREATIVE TAPAS ITEMS...WE WERE THERE OVER THE WEEKEND THE PLACE WAS PACKED..I GUESS THAT SAYS IT ALL WHY PEOPLE COME THIS PLACE..TRY OCTOPUS..IF YOU ARE LUCKY JUMBO SCALLOPS,DRY SALTED CURED TUNA..OFCOURSE CROQUETAS...FOOD IS TOP NOTCH.HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT....

I should say that i'm from Spain, and that it's true that we don't have many choices in New York but this is perhaps one of the worst and should only be compared to the latin american tapas that serve spanish food, the cheff is from Galicia and as we all know not the best cook, but that said if you are looking for some fusion and extremely expensive food this is the place...they twins do have lots of aptitude one more than the other and don't love when people just stop by for a drink and a tapa.....if you are looking for a better place stop by 1492 in LES also managed by latin americans but a least better food, much cheper and a beautiful space that will take you back to Spain for a couple hours, the staff there is friendly and you will find some local spaniard/catalan hanging out there which is a good sign. Enjoy!

I AM DEFINATELY AGREE THAT THE TWIN SISTERS ARE THE SWEETIEST AND NICEST GIRLS...THE FOOD IS OUT OF WORLD..YES THEIR WINE MENU IS VERY SMALL BUT THIS IS A TAPAS RESTAURANT AND ALL OF THEIR WINES AVAILABLE BY GLASS...WE LOVE DIEGO'S DAILY SPECIALS..IF YOU GO FIRST TAKE A LOOK AT THE LITTLE BLACK BOARD AT THE BAR.AND LISTEN CAREFUULY ALL THE SPECIALS...EACH OF THEM AMAZING...I STILL TASTE FOIE GRAS,DUCK CONFIT,FILET MIGNON CARPACCIO, DRY SALTED CURED TUNA....ANDDDDDDDDD OFCOURSE CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE..AND YUO LEAVE THE RESTAURANT WITH A BIG SMILE ON YOUR FACE..

I have been to Zipe Zape twice. Each time, I found the food and the service to be excellent. The twin sisters are very sweet and professional. I was a fan of their former restaurant, Aiolli. I have been to many of the tapas joints in the city and none of them come close to matching the quality of the food at Zipe Zape. Period. Now, I can only hope that Zipe Zape will start Paella nights!

I'VE HAD VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE LAST NIGHT.THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT.WE HAVE TRIED SO MANY THINGS.EVERY SINGLE DISH WAS SO PERFECT AND NICELY DONE.YOU UNDERSTAND THE CHEF PUTS HIS HEART IN IT.WE REALLY LIKED THE SANGRIA.SERVICE WAS SO SWEET AND PROMPT.

it is just does not make sense to me about all this negative reviews.i found this place excellent..staff is so sweet, very helpful..compare to the other restaurants they do not have a attitute problem...food is excellent...by the way the sisters run the place are excellent as well..they are always so pleasant and so kind..no wonder they do have a lot of regulars...love the place , love the food, love the service...the most close food to my home country...

I had a good experience at this restaurant. I went with my husband, who is from Spain, and we both agreed that it was the best tapas place we had been to since he's been in the states. The waiter we had was very personable. The price is always hard to swallow for tapas here if you've spent any time in Spain, but I found it to be more affordable than most other tapas places around the city. I definitely would go back.

Disappointment as well. Food was ok but staff was rude and condescending. Prices aren't cheap enough to endure that.

Generally a big disappointment. It's so close to us and we love Spanish food, so we had high hopes. I think they cater more to Wall Street types slumming it in Williamsburg. The prices are a bit high, and though the food was pretty good, the attitude was out of control. We sat at the bar on a not busy night. Our waitress, the bartender and manager, hated us from the moment we sat down. We had to ask for utensils, lemons, salt, water, and napkins. On our bill she overcharged us and then denied she did until we made her get the menu to compare prices. When the menu showed she did in fact overcharge us for a dish, rather than apologize she said we were inexperienced diners.

I had the exact opposite experience! The staff is friendly and the food is always as it should be: simple and delicious. The wine list is small(once again very authentic) with something nice for every taste. The summer white sangria is one of the best I've ever had. Great for large parties or a quiet evening with a glass of rose and some chirizo al diablo.

"Staff is not helpful," the previous reviewer said. That's an understatement! I can't even comment on the food because my girlfriend and I left before we ever ordered. On a Tuesday evening, we sat down outside at a 4-person table. Not a soul was in the restaurant, and there were plenty of tables around. The waitress brought us our menus and asked us if we knew what we wanted to drink. I told her that we didn't know yet, and that we might just get drinks and a snack. As soon as she heard that, she started to walk away, then came back said, "uh... this table is... reserved." She was obviously lying. We told her we could get up if someone came. And she said "why dont you just get up now." So we did. And we won't ever go back.

I have been consistently disappointed at this restaurant. Was very excited to have a tapas joint closeby; however, this one is not worth the trip. Three visits - all bombed. Food lacks flavor and depth, wine list is weak, staff is not helpful.
