CUP ON NY SAYS: Atlas Cafe is perfectly located for people-watching. The floor-to-ceiling windows along two walls of the cafe let in a ton of light too, so it's a fun place to sit and relax over a cappuccino, which is well made... As a plus, if you go before around 2:00 on a weekend, it's easy to find a seat -- unlike most coffee shops in less densely-hipsterized areas.

Cafe Capri

Italian Coffee Shop
427 Graham Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11211
(between Graham Ave. and Withers St.)
Map: Click Here
[L Train to Graham Avenue]

This long-standing barista boasts the neighborhood's finest iced coffee (even at $4 a pop it's a steal) as well as a cannoli that would make an Italian mama blush. The interior, dripping with seasonal Easter bunny cut-outs or fruit-striped candy canes, is warm and inviting and the counter is always loaded with fresh baked sweets wrapped in cellophane. You might catch the occasional shag hanging about, but there are only four tables to lounge around in and the extended family takes up two of them. Plus, owner's Joe and Sarah nixed their smoking section last year, cutting its hipster lingering down by almost 50%. Don't worry about losing out on all the fun by asking for it to go-Joe weaves a great two-minute story chock full of neighborhood lore.

La Villita

Spanish Bakery and Cafe
171 Grand Street (at Bedford Ave.)
PHONE: (718) 486-8761
MAP: Click Here
WE SAY: This family-run bakery has been in the neighborhood for years and has never raised their prices. For about $2 you are hooked with a massive bacon egg and cheese sandwich and another 50 cents you get a great coffee (with warmed milk). The employees there have no attitude and will even teach you a little spanish if you're nice. They also have an ass-kicking selection of other cheap ($2.50) sandwiches which will put you in a food coma for the remainder of the day - I go with the pork or the chicken sandwich personally. Everything is so good and cheap - you'll find yourself eating a chicken soft taco at anytime of the day - even if you're totally full!

NY MAGAZINE SAYS: As hipster parents munch on all things organic, barefoot little ones settle into the back area, covered in 800 square feet of bouncy foam tile, at this café-meets-playspace in Williamsburg. Co-owners Maria Laura Quintero and Mariella Salazar (a chef and a former teacher, both of whom gave birth on the same day three years ago) built a loftlike restaurant where the dining area borders the play zone, and parent diners are responsible for watching their own kids. A few hobbyhorses, a small picture-book library, and a mini school bus are scattered about, but most parents bring their own toys and formula. For those who prefer to travel light, Quintero grills up arepitas—silver-dollar-size cornmeal patties from her native Venezuela--served with cheese, butter, and avocado or chicken. Admission to the playroom is a $5, and families can come and go all day long. Kids can play dress up, draw on the chalkboard, or simply run around the open space. Classes for kids and their caregivers have varying prices and schedules and include baby yoga, music, and a bilingual dance class. Mamalú is available for private birthday parties on the weekends and can arrange for everything from food and entertainment to invitations and photography.

CITY SEARCH SAYS: This unadorned cafe has the feel of a college-town coffeehouse, liberally sprinkled with beards, bangs and butch haircuts. Fans line up for takeout pastries, bagels and self-serve coffee, and sit down to lunches of steamed eggs, hummus platters and BLTs with "fakin' bacon." While the Pixies blast over the speakers, resilient freelancers stay tuned into their laptops. The backyard provides a relaxing alternative, with wood-planked walls, climbing vines and umbrella-topped tables. Cappuccino, chai and caramel lattes are complemented by a small selection of beer and wine.

NY Magazine SAYS: Economics and rent stabilization issues may consign New York's latest crop of aspiring artists to Bushwick, but at least they don't have to trek to Williamsburg for a quick bite or jolt of java--or even an art show or live jazz. Potion Cafe, housed in a former industrial space, offers these necessities with bare-bones simplicity and winning grace. Although its steep steps and dim cavernous interior still suggest that it's all warehouse, the cafe's comfy couches, casual tables, and raid-the-fridge menu make it more of a clubhouse. In addition to croissants, bagels, and cake-textured muffins, the menu offers a handful of fresh, sturdy sandwiches like turkey and brie on a substantial French roll, a hummus panini, and a sharp cheddar-and-pesto croissant. The bar serves strong organic coffee, serious tea, and a selection of wine, beer, and mixed drinks. The atmosphere is loose and laid-back, and the cafe doubles as a gallery and performance space for its neighbors. With this unpretentious little haven so close at hand, the fresh-faced urban-outfitted Bushwick kids aren't missing out on much at all. Recommended Dishes: Hummus on croissant, $5; tuna-melt sandwich, $5.75

Supercore Cafe

between South First and South Second
PHONE: 718.302.1629

SUBWAY: L at Bedford Ave; J, M, Z at Marcy Ave.
MAP: Click Here
DELIVERY: No
EXTRAS: Live jazz on Sunday afternoons
CITY SEARCH SAYS: "In understated fashion, this Japanese tapas bar unites the sensibilities of two capitals of hipness—Tokyo and Williamsburg. It has a warm, clean decor of square wood panels and paper lanterns, plus the cute touch of dolls spinning on turntables in the windows. Tricked-out jazz, pop and electronica play most nights, while progressive DJs such as John Davis spin on weekends. Pleasant bartenders serve a range of $3 and $4 Japanese home cooking-style dishes, all presented in artful ceramics. The distinctive offerings include sake-simmered sardines with ginger—salty, yet tempered with light flavors—and the refreshing burdock in sesame sauce; an underseasoned beef stew and bland rice balls are better skipped. The one sake available by the glass, Onigoroshi, is delectably smooth and dry. Other drink options include beer, sangria, prosecco and in chilly weather, a fragrant, comforting mulled wine."

Verb Cafe

218 Bedford Avenue
PHONE: (718) 599.0977
WEB: www.verbcafe.com
MAP: Click Here
WE SAY: Verb Cafe is really three places in one--a great morning to go coffee shop, a cozy afternoon soup/salad/sandwich cafe, and a romantic evening dessert/wine bar. It features an eclectic decor, the best coffee around, and a friendly atmosphere. Stop by for some Ciao Bella Gelato or H&H bagels. Their house blend of coffee (No. 7) is available by the pound. On a down note, it can get really crowded.
