WE SAY: Our favorite under-the-radar restaurant Bahía was featured on the Food Network recently and we were delighted to see them finally get some props. If you haven't tasted their pupusas yet, run out now and try them. (Pupusa are yummy corn pancakes filled with cheese, pork, etc). Their cerviche is also always fresh and delicious. Never had Salvadoran food? Do yourself a favor and try Bahía before everyone else discovers it. The atmosphere is bland, but the food is amazing.
Note - the pasta dishes are ok, but are mainly included to please the heavily italian neighboorhood. Stick to the Salvadoran food.

WE SAY:
The ambience leaves much to be desired, but the food is fresh, unusual, and amazing. Chimu is omur favorite new Williamsburg restaurant. Best of all, it is usually fairly hipster free since the owners are actually Peruvian. Their BYOB policy is due to expire as soon as they get a license, so take advantage while it lasts.

NY MAG SAYS: Shrunken jeans and bug-eyed sunglasses have made their inevitable migration to the hinterland of East Williamsburg, but this local Ecuadorian standout has yet to change its menu to accommodate persnickety hipster taste buds. On weekdays you'll find mostly locals bellying up to the table for one of the neighborhood's best deals--$6 multicourse lunches that consist of spicy seafood soups, goat-meat stew, or whatever traditional fare the chefs whip up that day. Platos typicos such as stuffed greens plantains, hen stew, and fried pork beef with rice are heavy enough to require an afternoon nap, but Don Pedro's lightens things up significantly with their outstanding seviches: Unlike the ultrarare, citrus-cured varieties presented a martini glass across the river, these seafood "cocktails" are served in bowls stuffed-to-overflowing with meaty shrimp and tender fish chunks marinated with red peppers, onion, cilantro, vinegar, and olive oil. Pre-meal, dawdling diners can check out prerecorded concerts with famous Latin musicians on the projection screen behind the bar, but those with a hearty appetite would do well to get eatin': On weeknights the kitchen closes at 7 p.m. On some nights, Don Pedro's dining room turns into a DIY venue for an eclectic bevy of Todd P-booked shows; check the restaurant's Website for details.

CITY SEARCH SAYS: Nestled into a relatively quiet section of Williamsburg, this brightly painted spot draws a neighborhood mixture of budget-conscious youngsters and health-conscious elders. Combo plates ranging from $7 to $11 are a good way to try several different items off the ever-changing menu of Rastafarian-approved dishes like jerk tofu, spicy chickpeas, and curried seitan "goat." Dairy-free desserts such as banana cake and ginger cookies round out the meal with a sampling of the Caribbean's sweeter side. Wash down your meal with a traditional Jamaican beverage like ginger beer or sorrel juice. Alcohol is not served, but you are welcome to bring your own; several nearby bodegas are well-stocked with specialty beers. This restaurant is counter-service only, and you will earn high marks with staff for busing your own table.

NY MAG SAYS: Miranda is a mom-and-pop shop done up in the simple style of a neighborhood trattoria. Sasha Rodriguez, the Queens-bred daughter of a Dominican father and Irish-American mother, runs the kitchen, while her fiance, Mauricio Miranda, of Guerrero, Mexico, works the dining room like a young Silvano Marchetto--greeting guests as if they were long lost relatives, recommending bottles of (often organic) wine, and occasionally breaking into a little cha-cha-cha dance whenever the joy of owning and operating a restaurant with the woman he loves becomes too much.

The couple met while working at Verbena, started dating, and soon dreamed of opening a place of their own. What kind of place they didn't know. Subsequent stints at Alto and the C.I.A. Italian program (Sasha) and L'Impero and Spigolo (Mauricio) convinced them that combining the Latin American cooking they grew up on with their love for Italian food was a good way to go.

And for the most part it is, thanks to the fact that the menu doesn't hit you over the head with the fusion conceit. The problem with cross-culinary cooking of this sort is that it can seem far-fetched or forced, like the gastronomic equivalent of an arranged marriage. Not so here: Latinized arancini are a little too soft and crumbly on the outside, but they're dappled with a bright tomato sauce and filled with a winning mixture of chopped spinach and Mexican chorizo. A salsa guajillo is a good, smoky match for breaded and fried smoked mozzarella. Other appetizers, like mussels marinara, and a sparkling salad of baby romaine, ricotta salata, and sun-dried tomato, for example, simply forgo fusion altogether.

WE SAY: This Latin Fusion restaurant just off the Graham Avenue stop of the L opened in February 2006. It's a tad hard to get to, but the delicious cerviche, the pulled pork, and the quesadillas make it worth the walk. The quinoa & beans side is exquisite. Plus, they have buy 1 get 1 free drink specials until 8pm. If you're too lazy to walk to Meserole, Mojito Loco offers free delivery until 11pm as well.

NY MAG SAYS: A restaurant claiming to serve Mexican "style" food usually warns off seekers of authentic eats, but if you hold off on the rush to judgment, first impressions are fortunately deceiving on this corner of an as of yet ungentrified chunk of Williamsburg. Past the slapdash streamers and liquor ads, a few well-chosen pieces of art dot the unassuming space. One sip of a margarita or mojito showcases an able hand at the bar, and a glimpse behind a curtained-off area reveals a comfy lounge, prone to playing contemporary Latin rock come nightfall. The menu proves itself in similarly small, impressive ways. Crunchy, El Paso-style shells on the taco plate are an initial turnoff, but a cautious bite delivers a stuffing of particularly well-seasoned chunks of beef. And while enchiladas Suizas may look sloppy and gloppy, the accompanying salsa verde is agreeably full of cilantro, and crema fresca as a welcome, authentic touch. The real finds, however, are the Ecuadorian specialties: Shrimp ceviche marinated in fresh tomato, lime juice, red onion, and cilantro, and weekend-only specials like goat stew pull out all the authentic gustatory stops

METROMIX SAYS: Named after the Spanish word for "vineyard," Viñas is an inspired pan-Latin eatery with a rusted adobe atmosphere in Williamsburg. The Spanish and South American wine list itself is actually not that interesting--which is fine because the rest of the candle-and-lantern-lit restaurant is, with its farmhouse-style wooden tables, colorful counter tiles, tin and iron work. The menu has many worthy highlights that require repeat visits (or lots of sharing and sampling with friends), including Andalusian meatballs in garlic saffron sauce, quail a la piancha drizzled with chipotle, espresso bean and honey reduction, Ecuadorian shrimp, and truffled honey-glazed pork belly.
