VILLAGE VOICE SAYS: Hovering near Newtown Creek, the border between Brooklyn and Queens, Acapulco specializes in urbanized Mexican food like tacos, tortas, fajitas, and huaraches—sandal-shaped masa receptacles slathered with refried beans, then freighted with shredded lettuce, fresh cheese, crema, and your choice of chicken, meat, or vegetables. There's hardly a speck of mole poblano in the place. Tacos are south-of-the-border standard, made with two soft corn tortillas, although they'll also make the hard-shell variety. As the menu patronizingly says: "For gringos and our Texan friends."

WE SAY: The best fish tacos in New York.
NY MAG SAYS: "We don't like new," says Williamsburg restaurateur Mark Firth. No kidding. Three years ago, he and partner Andrew Tarlow restored a 1927 Brooklyn diner (now Diner), preserving its quaintly dilapidated ambience while applying a veneer of hipness and-most important-assembling a talented kitchen. They can now be found, at Bonita, Firth and Tarlow's new cantina, four blocks away. In their trademark preservationist style, they've kept the former Latino lunch counter's sign trumpeting comidas criollas, the row of stools opposite the open kitchen, and a few nods to the old menu, like plantains. But cheese-dusted corn on the cob, fish tacos, and chiles rellenos, not to mention soft light flickering off multicolored tiles, set an entirely different tone.

WE SAY: Cliché Haight-Ashbury decorations adorn this bland burrito joint. Absolutely no attention is paid to food quality and preparation. These guys just wanna make a buck and apparently have no interest in pleasing the palate. A good place to go when you you are in a hurry, only have 5 bucks, and could give a damn about what you eat.

NY MAG SAYS: A restaurant claiming to serve Mexican "style" food usually warns off seekers of authentic eats, but if you hold off on the rush to judgment, first impressions are fortunately deceiving on this corner of an as of yet ungentrified chunk of Williamsburg. Past the slapdash streamers and liquor ads, a few well-chosen pieces of art dot the unassuming space. One sip of a margarita or mojito showcases an able hand at the bar, and a glimpse behind a curtained-off area reveals a comfy lounge, prone to playing contemporary Latin rock come nightfall. The menu proves itself in similarly small, impressive ways. Crunchy, El Paso-style shells on the taco plate are an initial turnoff, but a cautious bite delivers a stuffing of particularly well-seasoned chunks of beef. And while enchiladas Suizas may look sloppy and gloppy, the accompanying salsa verde is agreeably full of cilantro, and crema fresca as a welcome, authentic touch. The real finds, however, are the Ecuadorian specialties: Shrimp ceviche marinated in fresh tomato, lime juice, red onion, and cilantro, and weekend-only specials like goat stew pull out all the authentic gustatory stops

WE SAY: This Latin Fusion restaurant just off the Graham Avenue stop of the L opened in February 2006. It's a tad hard to get to, but the delicious cerviche, the pulled pork, and the quesadillas make it worth the walk. The quinoa & beans side is exquisite. Plus, they have buy 1 get 1 free drink specials until 8pm. If you're too lazy to walk to Meserole, Mojito Loco offers free delivery until 11pm as well.

TIME OUT SAYS: This all-night taco shop is nearing institutional status because (a) it has the freshest lettuce and tomatoes you're likely to find in the East Village, and (b) where else can you find a taco when you really need one - at 4:30 am, after a night of hard drinking? Besides, San Loco's Queso Loco - a hardshell taco that's wrapped in a soft tortilla that's spread with melted cheese - can kick Taco Bell's culo.

WE SAY: Sante Fe is one of the newest arrivals to the Williamsburg dining and drinking scene, offering Southwestern and Mexican inspired food inside or in a cute garden setting outside. Their free homemade chips and salsas are bottomless. And everyone from the devout vegetarian to the diehard carnivore will find something that suits his/her fancy. Dishes range from the traditional, like burritos and flautas, to the unique, like the Ancho Dusted Artichoke Hearts and Beet Down Salad. If the dishes aren’t spicy enough, just ask your waitress to bring you one of 50 hot sauces, including their homemade spicifier. But if it’s drinks you want, stick to beer or tequila shots. Maybe the bartender was still in training. The margaritas we ordered tasted like Cointreau on the rocks with salt. There was hardly a hint of tequila or limejuice. And the dining experience might have been heightened if the live equivalent of the Wafflehouse jukebox wasn’t sitting in the garden with us. There’s something mildly disturbing about hearing fellow diners singing “Pork Shack” to the tune of “Love Shack” while you’re eating the mole slathered Carnitas Mole.

CITY SEARCH SAYS: This destination for Mexican food has a buoyant, artisanally crafted scheme of blond wood, turquoise walls and a red undulating border that immediately refreshes the eye. While the seating is vast, it's pleasingly lofty and group-ready. The restaurant, whose name loosely translates to "pimp taco," is drawing a mostly neighborhood crowd. Opened by a Texan and Californian who missed the food they grew up on, the restaurant uses organic, authentic ingredients. The lime-garnished tacos burst with such fresh fillings as slow-braised pork, snappy shrimp with marinated cabbage, and cool, marinated baby cactus. Along with a vibrant, chopped pico de gallo and lively guacamole, the queso fundido--melted cheese that's piqued with bacon, smoked chiles and onions--is a sumptuous alternative to nachos. And all are accompanied by crisp homemade tortilla chips. The pozole verde soup is only for hominy fans, but the salads are rich enough for meaty appetites, too. The cocktail ingredients are fresh and high-quality. Try a house margarita or an iced beer with lime, chile, a salted rim and splash of tomato--a stimulating take on the bloody mary.

WE SAY: With a festive, chatty bar up front serving good margaritas and icy Coronas, and a delightful open-air garden out back, Vera Cruz delivers inventive if inconsistent Mexican food at reasonable prices. Standards include hearty burritos, meat or veggie-filled soft tacos, and good rice and beans along with a smattering of more creative dishes. The salsa can be watery, and the guacamole seems to be cut with cucumber relish, but both do the trick, especially after you've had a couple of margaritas. More adventuresome palates will enjoy the grilled corn on the cob, served with mayonnaise and cotija cheese, or the southwestern salad topped with juicy grilled portabellos, tomatoes, and chunks of tepid cactus. Don't count on the service here, though, which is notoriously slow, or simply absent.

GRIDSKIPPER SAYS: Don't blink, or you'll miss Yola's Cafe. This Mexican hole in the wall, located a few steps below a busy stretch of Metropolitan Avenue in second-stop Williamsburg, Brooklyn, isn't much to look at, but the food is so good that it's rapidly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in New York. I've always been a fan of their big beefy burritos, but lately I've been working through their recurring daily specials, all of which impress. Corn shuck-wrapped tamales come stuffed with tangy chicken or sublime adobo pork. Fish tacos, each with a perfectly flaky flounder filet swaddled with salad and guacamole in two flour tortillas, could easily be served at a fancier restaurant at twice the price. Yola's is mostly a take-out and delivery place, but there are two tiny tables as well as four revolving bar stools set against a six-inch-wide counter. To kill the seven or so minutes it takes for your order to be ready, go to the bodega next door for a $3 quart of Tecate (last cooler on the left, bottom shelf), pound a tequila shot across the street at the Subway Bar, or just enjoy the hilarious Spanish-language soap operas on the TV.
