NY MAG SAYS: For Williamsburg hipsters who are slowly being priced out of their hood, Anna Maria's provides a taste of the old days when thing were still cheap and authentic under the L train. Two dollars will buy a thickish slab of cheese pizza--slightly oily but better than average, and large enough to keep a hipster's jeans safely around his hips. $3.50 will buy some more vitamins, in the form of a specialty slice topped with a veggie and/or meat combo. A soggy $4 calzone is worth it only if you need to fulfill your RDA of grease, but 8 smackers will buy a bona fide hot meal, like chicken cutlets or tortelloni, albeit on a disposable plate. All of this affordable nourishment is available late into the night, so starving artists, as well as crowds of drunken bar-goers, can fuel up whenever inspiration strikes

TIME OUT NY SAYS: Though its name means "hugs and kisses" in Italian, Baci & Abbracci carefully balances its grandma-style Italian rusticity with a Euro-chic sensibility. Subtle architectural touches, like saucer-shaped light fixtures and a chrome-furniture-filled back garden, lend the casual eatery a modern, space-age look. The old-world influences pop up in the kitchen. The bulging wood-burning oven (imported from Naples) evokes the homeland, and Sorrento native Francesco Mastellone tosses the pies. In addition to pizzas, the menu includes classic dishes like sauteed calamari and veal milanese. We especially liked the polpa e patate appetizer, meaty hunks of octopus and boiled potato slices tossed with slivers of zesty raw garlic, olive oil and plenty of parsley. We also enjoyed a sauceless pizza topped with chewy smoked mozzarella, strips of mild pancetta and caramelized onions. Unfortunately, the crust lacked the crispness of a perfect thin-crust pie. A dessert, torta di nonna, with custardy sabayon, chocolate-cream piping, and crushed, toasted pine nuts and pecans, was named for -- you guessed it -- grandma.

WE SAY: Voted best pizza by the NY Press, this brick oven joint boasts that its brick oven is 112 years old. Maybe this is true, but to be honest all we really care about is the pizza and it is pretty darn good. Atmosphere is classic Brooklyn, wood paneling and all, and perfect for a cozy dinner. Italian entrees with often homemade pasta are a nice added bonus.

CITY SEARCH SAYS: "Pizza for the next generation: Fantastic Williamsburg pizzeria pays homage to the classics while adding a few twists of its own. The glow from the restaurant's wood-burning oven carries a warm welcome to the unpretentious neighborhood crowd. The narrow front room lined with wooden tables opens into an indoor/outdoor back dining room, overlooking potted herbs that top the pies. Unfortunately, the uninformed service doesn't honor the carefully selected ingredients (organic flour, artisanal cheese and local produce). Though pizza reigns supreme, the starter of clams baked in a tangy broth of capers, lemon, garlic and herbs is a lovely diversion. Generous toppings grace the more than 20 pies, organized by first, second and third generation. Even on the classic, normally spare, margherita, the rich mozzarella nearly overpowers the sweet tomato sauce; yet the richness is addicting. The thin crust, charred black around the edges, adds a smokey dimension, which pulls together the oddball Salsiccia Di Agnello, with lamb sausage, two cheeses and pistachios. Save room for the light tiramisu."

NY MAG SAYS: Can two hip musicians versed in punky blues rock find fulfillment as artisanal pizza-makers in Bushwick? Owned by Chris Parachini (on bass) and Brandon Hoy (on keyboards), the pizzeria is in a forlorn part of Brooklyn filled with gritty factories, warehouses, and lofts. The restaurant, housed in a former garage, has wood-paneled walls, elongated wood tables, and mismatched captain's chairs. Out back is a patio with additional seating and a rusting Mercedes-Benz sedan studded with flowerpots. The pizza, made in a wood-burning oven, is Neapolitan in inspiration and technique. The crusts are admirably airy and crispy, and the mozzarella homemade--but the tomato sauce could be richer and more assertive. There are nearly two dozen toppings, with unusual choices like taleggio cheese, capers, and tuna. The combo pizzas remove the guesswork: The guanciale and egg has delicious shavings of house-cured pork jowl surrounding an egg that has set perfectly, and the R.P.S. aptly balances peppery sorpresa with mellow roasted red peppers.

Aficionados of Bedford-area pizza and Italian cuisine might not have sampled Vertuccio's yet, but they're sure to be pleased once they do. This large, comfortable spot which neighbors Urban Rustic market and MustLuvDogs on the south end of McCarren Park is a pleasant addition to Williamsburg's ever-growing number of high-quality Italian eateries.

So don't let the "Pizza on the Park" designation fool you: Chef Gaetanno Giuffre's menu extends way beyond the pizza oven. Dishes like the Sauteed Wild Striped Bass (with fennel, oranges and a pistachio sauce) or the Grilled Rack of Lamb (with Barolo wine sauce, truffle oil and risotto) prove the diversity of the menu and the attention to detail that the staff has implemented. The dozen or so homemade pasta choices and the gluten-free pizza also offer unique options. The Vertuccio family is often on location, and do their best to create a cozy atmosphere -- which is aided by a warm interior, and by outdoor space when the weather permits. Vertuccio's serves lunch, dinner and brunch, and has five-mile delivery radius as well.

The restaurant, which opened late in the summer of 2009, is somewhat tucked away in the winter months, but we predict that will change rapidly when the warm weather brings crowds to the park across the street. Our advice: stop by soon before the crowds start dominating here. --Elizabeth Brady
