NY MAG SAYS: Vegans and bike enthusiasts gather for organic tea and soy burgers at this spirited Brooklyn coffeehouse, the first eatery for Brad Baker, owner of the Lower East Side cult bicycle shop Trackstar. The earth-toned room has fifteen-foot ceilings, warm brown walls, and small, square stained-pine café tables; exposed wiring, a booming indie soundtrack, and custom wall-mounted fixed-gear and racing bicycles perfectly fit the East Williamsburg location. The menu offers vegan plates with a few vegetarian exceptions—all named for famous riders and cycling trivia. These include oversize faux egg-and-cheese sandwiches, tempeh-bacon burgers, and simple salads. The quirky community atmosphere is arguably better than the food, which relies heavily on soy meat substitutes rather than inventive vegetable-and-grain combinations. All sandwiches are made with freshly baked bread from Manhattan’s Balthazar, though the thick organic pesto and spicy aioli that dresses the Peleton (provolone, sprouts, lettuce and tomato) and the Magnus (soy patty and sprouts on toasted rosemary focaccia) are more bland than bold. Even so, Boneshakers is a cheerful place to sit and talk shop over mugs of socially conscious Gimme! coffee and homemade tea-infused cupcakes.

NBC NY SAYS: Last summer, 333 Graham Avenue was a bustling storefront for OTB regulars, placing horse bets just steps from the Graham Avenue L stop and just a few blocks off of the BQE. But following the city's refusal to provide an essential "infusion of cash" last fall, a number of OTB's around the city began to shut their doors, including this one. But then, after months of construction between an 8-foot tall wooden fence, 333 Graham Avenue emerged as Pagoda Thai, a trendy-looking restaurant in a trendy corner of North Brooklyn. Each night of the store's opening week saw packed tables and a steady stream of delivery bags leaving its doors. And, despite popular Thai restaurants Sea and Tai Thai already calling the 'Burg home, Pagoda is located just far enough away from the center of things that they might be able to claim this part of East Williamsburg as their own. While Tai Thai might look like competition to the average take out enthusiast, a copyright by "TaiThai NYC" is listed on Pagoda's webpage, leading us to easily assume that Pagoda and the Williamsburg staple Tai Thai are sisters. As for the food, I was impressed. Pagoda offers a delightful blend of Thai and asian-influenced dishes, ranging from the staples like Spring Rolls and Fried Dumplings, to the more eccentric Curry dishes and specialties like the Pagoda Chicken Barbeque. Once inside, the decor allows you to forget the money lost, punches thrown and the smoke-soaked walls that once kept 333 pulsing.

NY MAGAZINE SAYS: "In the midst of a desolate block, Paloma's doors open wide, sheltered by a burgundy awning. Like an eager date, it's available: The sinuous wooden bar with its wide-planked floor offers a comfy perch, and the restaurant in back has plenty of tables, including a few appealing, odd-fit nooks. But the two halves don't quite make a whole: The lurch from the warm bar to the stark industrial-chic dining area is heightened by the white wall that doubles as DVD "screen," with whimsical programming--anything from Cab Calloway to extreme snowboarding to Betty Boop. Eats cover the gamut, from veg-friendly fare to carnivore-pleasers like double-cut pork chops and braised lamb. Plates are full and generally good, or good enough. Simple, seasonal entrees like slow-roasted pumpkin, served with an oddly dry mound of chile red lentils, and a lightly sauced striped bass with earthy-sweet fall vegetables hold appeal. The bland salt-cod fritters, all poufy breading, no bite of ocean, seem to run counter to the menu's Iberian-Carib sensibility. But the bar's generous guidance, providing wines for tasting or custom cocktails infused with Kaffir lime or house-made orange bitters, graciously lubricate any meal."

CITY SEARCH SAYS: This unadorned cafe has the feel of a college-town coffeehouse, liberally sprinkled with beards, bangs and butch haircuts. Fans line up for takeout pastries, bagels and self-serve coffee, and sit down to lunches of steamed eggs, hummus platters and BLTs with "fakin' bacon." While the Pixies blast over the speakers, resilient freelancers stay tuned into their laptops. The backyard provides a relaxing alternative, with wood-planked walls, climbing vines and umbrella-topped tables. Cappuccino, chai and caramel lattes are complemented by a small selection of beer and wine.

NY MAG SAYS: Imagine if Morgan Spurlock were to open a burger joint where the hamburgers were fashioned from contented, grass-fed, sustainably raised cows. That would be something like the situation at Urban Rustic, a grocery store in Williamsburg. Co-owner Aaron Woolf also happens to have directed the documentary film King Corn, and as it was in his film, Woolf’s mission here is to raise awareness about where our food comes from as much as it is to sell groceries. At Urban Rustic, the goods come mainly from local farmers, butchers, cheesemakers, and assorted purveyors. The 2,600-square-foot space is designed, in the current fashion, to look like a sleepy nineteenth-century general store, but has just about everything you’d expect to find in a modern foodie emporium, including a juice-and-coffee bar and an elevated dining area. Every item for sale, from the biodynamic yogurt to the Brooklyn bath salts, has a story, and, like good documentarians, Woolf and his partners plan to tell each one.
