Since the summer of 2011 Greenpoint restaurant Calyer held down the corner of Franklin St. and Cayler St. However, owner Blair Papagni (who also owns Anella) just made a big change to the space. From Eater:
Restaurateur Blair Papagni decided to turn her Greenpoint New American restaurant Calyer into a second location of her American comfort food restaurant Jimmy’s Diner. An employee at the restaurant tells Eater that the switch happened on Monday. The menu is similar to the one served at the original Williamsburg location.
The popular weekend brunch original Jimmy’s Diner is located at 577 Union Ave.
I’m all for a good brunch joke, but the current originality of Brooklyn/hipster/brunch humor is beating a dead horse while wearing an American Apparel onesie. Today’s example is a song by Cooking Channel’s ‘Chef-Comedienne’ Nadia G. She takes an awful melody and fills in the blanks Mad Libs style with “Ray-Bans”, ‘L-Train”, “Instagram”, “Irony”, “Loft” and for some reason “Crumpets.” Thanks or no thanks to Max Silvestri for sharing the link to this. With so many great places to eat in Williamsburg and its surrounding ‘burbs, finding the perfect spot for weekend brunch can be a hard decision.
Sure, you could wait in line for two hours at Egg or Five Leaves, listening to inane conversations about fixed gear bikes, Girls, and lofi shock-rap, but who wants to waste the whole day waiting for an egg sandwich when there are so many less-crowded places to choose from. (For those who possess more patience than us, Egg or Five Leaves both have fantastic food.)
The War on Brunch continues this morning and the hipster brunch-goers have lost an important battle: Lokal, the perpetually crowded bistro at the intersection of Nassau, Bedford, and Lorimer, is facing a citation for breaking a rule that states that sidewalk cafés cannot operate before noon on Sundays.
Lokal’s owners will go in front of a judge on June 11th. Despite all of the neighborhood’s brunch places, Lokal is the only one to receive a citation so far.
Tom Burrows, the public safety general for the area’s Community Board 1 is the main voice behind the battle against early morning brunch spots. Burrows’ main concern is that outdoor eating crowds the sidewalks for Sunday churchgoers.
INCONCEIVABLE! This Saturday and Sunday, Nitehawk Cinema will bring together two of the Y Generation’s most beloved pastimes: eating brunch and watching The Princess Bride. The theater’s full brunch menu will be served along with early day cocktails like the Carrie (vodka, house Bloody Mary mix, pickled vegetables) and the classic AM Gold (prosecco with fresh squeezed orange juice). Breakfast tacos, Inigo Montoya…. What better way to start the weekend? Show times are 12:15pm this Saturday and Sunday only.
Phil DePaolo, a Williamsburg resident for 32 years, filmed this unidentified glowing thingamajig around 11pm Monday night over the streets of the neighborhood. He said it vanished within 15 minutes. Rumor has it they came to Earth for brunch around 1pm, had one too many bloody marys and stayed all day. DePaolo caught their escape. They’ll be back for St. Patty’s day parties. Maybe its just some schmuck’s art project. Annoying footage from FoxNY
