Chopped and Scrooged: Sufjan Stevens Christmas Rap Remix

via

Because a five-EP box set is simply not an adequate celebration of Christmas, Sufjan Stevens has corralled a group of rappers for a Christmas-themed hip-hop mixtape featuring music from the box set. It’s called– wait for it– Chopped and Scrooged. Stream it via Soundcloud below, and download it here. Rappers on the tape include Heems, Kitty Pryde, Nicky Da B, and Busdriver, with production by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, Fol Chen, Son Lux, and more.

Holiday Craft Markets In Williamsburg, Bushwick and Greenpoint

3rd Ward Craft Fair (c/o Lock and Spoon)

Brokelyn has a great list covering many neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Here are the highlights closest to us, including our favorite holiday market at 3rd Ward:

BUSHWICK
The Sixth Annual Handmade Holiday Craft Fair at 3rd Ward
195 Morgan Ave
Dec. 15th 12-6pm.
First 200 people receive a limited-edition tote bag. Featuring over 100 Brooklyn-based vendors, and drinks and snacks from Boerum Hill’s Rucola.

GREENPOINT
Greenpointers Holiday Market
69 West St.
Dec. 8th, 12-6pm
Featuring gifts, art, crafts and food from Greenpoint and Brooklyn makers. Also a DIY holiday Photobooth and Gift Wrapping Station, and a bar with festive holiday drinks.

WILLIAMSBURG
Brooklyn Night Bazaar
45 N. 5th Street (enter between Wythe and Kent Ave.)
Through Dec. 22, Friday and Saturday nights, 6pm-Midnight
The Night Bazaar was inspired by markets across Asia, and features vendors (like hand painted skateboards from A Little Beast), art and music (such as Kyp Malone from TV On The Radio). Probably the most anticipated market of the season (and my suggestion as a not to miss!)

Williamsburg Fashion Weekend Holiday Market
Bird River Studios, 343 Grand St.
Dec 15th and 16th
This market features clothing and other types of wearable art by such designers as dresses by Brittany Erb and bags made from recycled materials by Himane Sustainable Designs.

Brokelyn’s full list is here.

UPDATE:

McGolrick Trees & your holiday playlist

So you think Christmas cheer is for squares? Wrong.

Greenpoint’s McGolrick Trees is not only your one stop shop for a fresh Carolina Fraser or the perfect holiday wreath, but now they’re providing the soundtrack to your Christmas Party too.

Started last year by Charlie Poekell, the McGolrick tree stand is open 24 hours for late night carolers, and is manned by a steady staff of neighborhood friends and fellow artists.

“We sell Christmas trees and accessories to locals, by locals,” says the slogan on their Tumblr.

I imagine hanging out all night slinging trees gets cold and maybe a little boring, so with a group of stand workers like Woodsman‘s Trevor Peterson, Edwin white of Tonstartssbandht, Ari Stern of Underwater Peoples Records, Family Portrait‘s Evan Brody, Nate Grace of Pure X, and Jamie Granato of Group Tightener, it was only a matter of time before a compilation of previously unreleased Christmas tree mood music was born.

The comp features holiday tunes from Dent May, Woodsman, Eola, Ava Luna, Family Portrait, Dead Gaze, Flower Orgy, Low Praises, and Samurai Buck.

Oh come all ye faithful, and get a free limited edition recording  at the tree stand starting this weekend. Pick yourself up a copy, get one as a gift, or check it out here

To get you in the spirit, here’s a new take on a classic:

Caroling at the Knitting Factory

Get together with your friends, musicians, singers, former choir members, people who like to sing in the shower, etc. We will have a festive party with holiday music, spiked egg nog (or hot chocolate) and social networking.

Amateur singing? Spiked nogs? Santa hats? A room filled with fucking holiday cheer? Check all, please! Monday night the Knitting Factory will host a night of group caroling and live music. Despite the fact that the Christmas creep has made the holiday basically in effect since September, we are still going to soak up this opportunity to embrace the seasonal merriment.

There is a discounted cover if you wear a Santa hat, and the cover already pays for your first cocktail and holiday cookies. Who’s bringing the mistletoe? (Everyone, bring mistletoe.)

A very Mayer Christmas

Christmas time really is here! I know it might be hard to tell in the middle of all this rain and crap weather, but I ate some gingerbread cookies last night and there are tons of lights up on the Avenues. So there is really no denying it.

Add this Mayer Hawthorne track to all your holiday mixtapes and iPod playlists. The soulful singer’s take on the Vince Guaraldi classic is pretty subtle. The kind of thing you can just put on in the background while your sitting by your fireplace sipping on some egg nog and falling in and out of sleep.

Don’t celebrate Christmas? Neither does Mayer. “All the best Xmas songs were written by Jews, and Chanukah songs suck,” he said on Twitter. It’s true, too! And “Christmas Time is Here” is the kind of track that can be played all year, regardless of religious practices. Stream it below or download it here.
