Pow Wow!: Check ‘Em Out Tonight At Cameo

See them tonight at Cameo before they head to Austin!

pow wow! is the brainchild of the Eddie & Jeff Nazareno, brothers originally from the suburbs of Northern New Jersey and currently based in Astoria, Queens. After performing as a duo at a number of venues in the tri-state area and releasing a string of self produced DIY records between 2008-2009, the group became a highly buzzed about new band, having been covered by several notable names in the New York City music media, touting them to be one of the best New York City Bands of 2009. Comparisons have been drawn from The Velvet Underground to the Modern Lovers, with pow wow!’s loose yet hook laden guitar and bass lines, primitive and ramshackle drumbeats and the freewheeling delivery of Eddie Nazareno’s vocals, which see-saw between speak sing and soulful howl.

Roberta’s Super Bowl Party (at The Warsaw)

This will certainly be packed so make a reservation at superbowl@robertaspizza.com. (Via their really annoying, seizure-inducing Tumblr.)

Spider Bags – Tonight at Cameo Gallery

Spider Bags’ 2012 release “Shake My Head” was grossly underrated. We blame their HORRIBLE name. Still, this North Carolina-based garage band put out one of our favorite records of 2012. Catch them tonight at Cameo in Williamsburg.

Kill… and Kill Again: Murder Ballads at the Way Station

Last year, musician Elisa Flynn began doing group shows at the Way Station in Brooklyn, based on Americana-type themes. The first was based on the Anthology of American Folk Music, and second (which is happening Tues. 1/15 from 8:30 – 11:30) is Murder Ballads. The first one was a huge success, and show two sounds great as well:

Thirteen artists play one classic murder ballad, followed by their own version of the tale, redone for 2013!

Artists: Sarah Bisman, Maharajah Sweets, Lys Guillorn, Alex Mallet, Valerie Kuehne, Paul Ryan, Spiff Wiegand, Elisa Flynn, Mark Rogers & Mary Byrne, Painless Parker, Emily Duff, Danny Tuss, Whiskey Ginger.
Songs/stories taken so far:
Stagger Lee
The Two Sisters
Schnittke’s Faust Cantata (Yep! No rules people! Just bloody mayhem!)
Knoxville Girl
Banks of the Ohio
Henry Lee
Long Black Veil
Delia’s Gone
Omie Wise
The Wind and Rain
Swannanoa Tunnel

Check it out tomorrow at Way Station! Here’s the Facebook invite.

Want to participate in the next show “All I’ve Got is a Photograph,” on 4/16/13? Here’s how:

If you’re interested in contributing, please e-mail a writing sample to nycurated@gmail.com. We’d love to hear your feedback on the best new restaurant in Greenpoint, a recent gallery opening in Bushwick or the latest trend coming out of Williamsburg.

The Most Blogged About Shows This Week

Most Buzzed Artists of 2012

This is a very special edition of “The Most Blogged About Shows This Week.”  The My Social List team, as you may or may not be aware, tracks nine of the most relevant indie music blogs on the planet in order to determine what the “most blogged about” shows are each and every day and each and every week.  This column isn’t all fun and games!  It’s based on HARD DATA (with some creative liberties, of course.)

Today, we’ve released our list of the most blogged about artists of 2012, which literally ranks the artists each blog talked about the most in the past year.  Who really got the most Pitchfork praise this year?  Who did BrooklynVegan commenters get the most chances to hate on in 2012?

Tonight: Brooklyn Night Bazaar Continues

There will be shopping, bands, and best of all an outpost by buzz restaurant Pok Pok NY:

Inspired by the night markets across Asia, Brooklyn Night Bazaar will bring together more than 200 of the borough’s most creative independent vendors, musicians, chefs, artists, breweries and wineries. Every Friday and Saturday night, for 5 consecutive weekends starting November 23 through December 22nd, 2012, this combined night market, art fair, food festival and concert series will return to its December 2011 home. The Night Bazaar will be held at 45 N. 5th Street, between Kent and Wythe Avenues, a massive 40,000 square foot warehouse in the heart of Williamsburg.

Last year, Brooklyn Night Bazaar presented music from various artists, including James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), YACHT, The Hold Steady, Fucked Up, Titus Andronicus and many more. This year, a host of media, music blogs and record labels will take the reigns of music curation, including Fader, Bust Magazine, Hype Machine, The Deli Magazine, Insound, Kanine Records, FatCat Record and Impose. We are pleased to announce the Bazaar’s 2012 lineup, including Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio), Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Black Dice, MEN (feat JD Samson of Le Tigre), Ayshay (Fatima Al Quadiri), French Horn Rebellion, Pictureplane, Emily Wells, Devin, and more TBA. The entire Bazaar will be free to the public. The organizers of Nuit Blanche New York (NBNY) will build upon NBNY’s recent pop-up performance venue The Autumn Bowl to art direct the Bazaar with a series of sound reactive light installations, electroluminescent wire, immersive cinema and an interactive searchlight installation.

Dates/Time: Friday and Saturday Nights, November 23 – December 22, 6 PM to Midnight. Location: 45 N. 5th Street, Williamsburg (btw Kent and Wythe Aves.) near Bedford L subway.
