The Most Blogged About Shows This Week

Dive

The holidays are over, and so is the live-music dead zone that is the week between Christmas and New Year’s. It’s always nice to start these most-blogged-about-shows posts with something free, so it’s my pleasure to present to you “Live From Tribeca,” tomorrow night at the Tribeca Grand, with sets by Dive and DJs The Horrors and Ilirjana.

There are some other good opportunities to check out buzz bands in the next seven days, as well.  King Krule is playing Mercury Lounge next Wednesday.  The same night, Buraka Som Sistema and Brenmar are playing Bowery Ballroom.  Also, don’t miss Keepway’s record-release show at Glasslands Gallery on Tuesday with Lakutis, Big Baby Ghandi, Dracula’s Dick (great name!) and a Das Racist DJ set.

Finally, for those looking for something more tried and true, there’s the Indelible Festival at Highline Ballroom – a tribute to Gil Scott-Heron, Gordon Parks & Jimmy Scott.   The show is TONIGHT and has an all-star lineup with Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), Jimmy Scott, Questlove, Robert Glasper, Bilal, Cecil Taylor, Gary Bartz and Derrick Hodge.

On to the top 9* shows for the next 7 days…

10. Steve Earle @ City Winery w/ Allison Moorer
Monday, January 9th at 8:00pm – 21+, $45 – $65 -> tickets

The Most Blogged About Shows of the Week

Fucked Up

Planning out your next 7 days of music will be tough: From Madison Square Garden to 285 Kent in Williamsburg, it might be tricky–and expensive–to see all of the most buzzed shows. Before we get to that, however, a brief point regarding a show we saw last week:  !!!/Friends at 285 Kent on Sunday night may have been our favorite show of the year.   Watching Nic Offer of !!! casually enter the venue (which lacks a back stage) and spend 20 minutes stretching as his band got ready provided a great prelude to an incredibly high-energy set. We are hoping he had a cramp-free Monday.

Tonight you may already have tickets for My Morning Jacket/Band of Horses at MSG. And we hope you made it on tomorrow’s RSVP list for Diplo at the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, as it is now closed; if you missed out, hip up Ducktails, Amen Dunes and Big Troubles at the 285 Kent holiday party instead.

This weekend, see the debut of the Brooklyn Night Bazaar in Williamsburg, including three shows from the likes of the Hold Steady, Fucked Up, James Murphy and many more contributing acts.  We’d like to highlight the $10 ticket price for the Fucked Up show and the fact that it is STILL ON SALE.   That is only the first of the BrooklynVegan Presents shows this weekend; on Saturday, you can see Twin Sister, Widowspeak and Ava Luna at Bowery Ballroom for $8 (also not sold out).

On to the top 10 shows for the next 7 days…

10. Smoke and Mirrors @ Eyebeam Art and Technology Center w/ Diplo, Smoke and Mirrors
Thursday, December 15th at 9:00pm – 21+, FREE! – RSVP Closed

Fucked Up playing David Comes to Life in its entirety

Usually to have the pleasure of seeing a band play a classic album live, you need to wait years after the album is released and it’s had some time to marinate in the collective conscious. Fucked Up don’t want to wait that long. Nor should they! This year’s David Comes to Life is big enough, epic enough and already gunning for classic album status.

On November 14, the band will play all 18 songs from David Comes to Life for the first time, live and in the round, at Le Poisson Rouge. Joining them will be fellow ambitious post-punk rockers Titus Andronicus. Get tickets here. This is one of the most exciting shows happening in 2011.

Video: Animal Man “Do You Feed”

Fucked Up put out one of the most ambitious records of the year with David Comes to Life - a concept record telling the story of people who are young and in love. As part of the most recent Record Store Day, the band put out David’s Town, a record consisting of fictional bands from the fictional town where David Comes to Life takes place.

Among the made up punk bands like Porcelain on Porcelain, Hateful Coil, and The Wavy Originals, there was this gem from Animal Man. And now, their song “Do You Feed” comes to life in video form. It’s Fucked Up guitarist Ben “Young Governor” Cook and bassist Sandy “Mustard Gas” Miranda walking around, eating food, dancing. You know, the story of people who are young and in love.

Fucked Up, Cro Mags and others played House of Vans

Last night Cro-Mags, Fucked Up, Screaming Females and Pissed Jeans played a free admission show at House of Vans in Brooklyn. It was a dripping wet show all around, starting with a torrential downpour that hit a couple of thousand kids outside shortly before doors opened at 7pm. Once inside the drenched show goers were greeted by sauna like conditions. Condensation was dripping from the ceiling while a band had yet to set foot onto the stage. Corporate sponsorship or not, it was a kick ass Brooklyn style warehouse summer show. Personally, I take this over any sterile Bowery Presents event any day. Shit was raw and messy, the way these things need to be. Footage of Cro-Mags, Fucked Up and Pissed Jeans is below. Screaming Females we unfortunately missed as we had to grab a bite outside.

The Most Blogged About Shows Of The Week

Twin Sister

Twin Sister (via Paste)

The trifecta of Flaming Lips, Weezer and Yeasayer at Jones Beach handily leads our list of the most blogged-about shows this week. Toss in Sufjan Stevens, Lykke Li and Death Cab for Cutie and you’ve got seven days dominated by indie rock. Tickets for these shows may be $30+, but it’s hard not to enjoy a little late-nineties/early-aughts nostalgia.

Beyond the old faves, we hope you’re checking out some of the great free shows this weekend: Fucked Up, Cro-Mags, Screaming Females and Pissed Jeans is one of the best lineups of the summer — and free entry plus free Heineken at the House of Vans will almost guarantee you a great hardcore evening. You also don’t want to miss the Mad Decent Block Party at South Street Seaport. Diplo may not show up, but Gang Gang Dance, Zeds Dead and others will certainly do their best to make up for it.

Still want more options? Check out My Social List’s database of FREE & OUTDOOR concerts.

Fucked Up playing 285 Kent Saturday

Did you pass on the Fucked Up/Off!/Dinosaur Jr. show last night because you didn’t want to make the trek to Terminal 5? Good news! According to Brooklyn Vegan, Fucked Up were officially revealed as the guest stars at 285 Kent Saturday night. They will be playing with JEFF the Brotherhood and Iceage.

Saturday night! Tickets are available at Record Grouch. Did you have plans for tomorrow night? You should reconsider, because this sounds like something people will be talking about around the water cooler for a long time to come.

Video: Fucked Up “Queen of Hearts”

I don’t know if this is a jab at the PS22 kids who sing indie songs, the coolest Kidz Bop  ever, or a thematic tribute to nostalgic young love that runs throughout Fucked Up’s David Comes to Life. But this video for “Queen of Hearts,” directed by Scott Cudmore, is amazing.
